Unintended Consequences Of Arousing Fear In Social Marketing, Nadine Henley, Rob Donovan
Unintended Consequences Of Arousing Fear In Social Marketing, Nadine Henley, Rob Donovan
School of Marketing, Tourism and Leisure Publications
The intention of social marketers, by definition, is to contribute to social good. However, an unintended consequence of the frequent use of fear-arousal in social marketing may be the creation of a sense of helplessness both in the target market and in unintended markets. Arousing fear may be counterproductive when attempting to persuade some people to abandon anxiety-soothing, addictive behaviours, such as smoking, drug and alcohol use (Firestone 1994) and may lead to counterproductive, fatalistic thinking and maladaptive responses (Job 1988; Rippetoe & Rogers 1987). The possibility that fear arousal creates helplessness is an important issue for marketing in the …

Life-History Consequences Of Maternal Condition In Alaskan Moose, Mark A. Keech
Life-History Consequences Of Maternal Condition In Alaskan Moose, Mark A. Keech
Biological Sciences
We studied characteristics of life-history of Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) including the effects of maternal condition of adult females on survival and physical condition of young during their first year-of-life. We also examined the relation between maternal condition and reproductive parameters of individual adult moose. We found that females in better physical condition, as indexed by rump-fat thickness, had higher rates of pregnancy, gave birth to more twins, and produced young with higher birth masses than did females with less rump fat. Expected time-to-death for individual young increased as birth mass increased and decreased with increasing birth date and …

Equine Osteoarthritis: A Comparison Of Type 1 And Type 2 Conditions, Wendy Chadbourne
Equine Osteoarthritis: A Comparison Of Type 1 And Type 2 Conditions, Wendy Chadbourne
Theses
In what originally began as research to answer my own questions about osteoarthritis, I learned as much as I could from reading anatomy, veterinary, and physiology books. I had to look in many places to find all the answers I wanted. The books that provided the best visual information lacked text to explain the images, and the books that provided the best text definitions usually provided simplified illustrations or very confusing clinical photographs. While trying to unite the best images with the best text explaining what was going on, an idea was formed. I decided to combine clear images with …

The Study Of The Use Of Advance Directives In Minnesota Nursing Homes As Perceived By Social Workers, Denise Sigstad
The Study Of The Use Of Advance Directives In Minnesota Nursing Homes As Perceived By Social Workers, Denise Sigstad
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study sought to discover the use of advance directives as reported by nursing home social workers. The focus is on residents who are living in nursing homes and are sixty years old or older. One hundred social workers in Minnesota were randomly surveyed on the current rate of advance directive use, barriers to completing the forms, and perceptions from social workers about whether they have or not have adequate knowledge and education to teach about advance directives. A review of the literatiare on advance directives shows the average use is only 5-18% for the elderly population. Survey findings confirm …
A Novel Oxigraphy System Based On Oxygen Luminescence Quenching, Craig T. Flanagan
A Novel Oxigraphy System Based On Oxygen Luminescence Quenching, Craig T. Flanagan
Utah Space Grant Consortium
A system suitable for real-time measurement of oxygen partial pressure (p02) in respiratory gas (oxigraphy) that is based on oxygen's ability to quench the phosphorescence of a lumiphore is described A description of currently used p02 technologies is provided followed by a description of the luminescence quenching p02 technology. A comparison of the technologies is made. The description of luminescence quenching p02 technology includes the operational theory and the advantages of the use of phosphorescence lifetime as opposed to phosphorescence intensity for p02 measurement. The clinical benefits of oxigraphy as well as a possible space-based application of luminescence quenching p02 …
