Maximum Temperature Trends In The Himalaya And Its Vicinity: An Analysis Based On Temperature Records From Nepal For The Period 1971–94, Arun B. Shrestha, Cameron P. Wake, Paul A. Mayewski, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences

Analyses of maximum temperature data from 49 stations in Nepal for the period 1971–94 reveal warming trends after 1977 ranging from 0.068 to 0.128C yr21 in most of the Middle Mountain and Himalayan regions, while the Siwalik and Terai (southern plains) regions show warming trends less than 0.038C yr21. The subset of records (14 stations) extending back to the early 1960s suggests that the recent warming trends were preceded by similar widespread cooling trends. Distributions of seasonal and annual temperature trends show high rates of warming in the high-elevation regions of the country (Middle Mountains and Himalaya), while low warming …

Diet Preference, Competition And Learning In A Cloud Forest Hummingbird Community, September 1999, Meg Seifert, Ambrose Tuscano Sep 1999

Diet Preference, Competition And Learning In A Cloud Forest Hummingbird Community, September 1999, Meg Seifert, Ambrose Tuscano

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to determine hummingbird preference between protein and higher sugar concentrations, and how any preference affects competition and memory. We hung three sets of three feeders in triangular patterns and observed hummingbird visits and interactions. We also, noted solitary feedings on the days directly following both site establishment and feeder rotation. Our results showed that there was an overall preference for the feeder with higher sugar concentration, that larger species and newcomers were generally dominant and that birds did not take longer to learn the values of established leaders that had been rotated than feeders …

Ontology And Realism About Modality, Crawford Elder Sep 1999

Ontology And Realism About Modality, Crawford Elder

Philosophy Articles

A philosopher who thinks substantive necessities obtain in re, this paper argues, need not believe in non-actual worlds, or maximal consistent sets of propositions, but merely in properties. For most properties, on even the sparsest property realism, are flanked by contraries with which they cannot be co-instantiated. True, Armstrong has shown that the impossibility that a property bearer should bear each of two contraries is sometimes just the impossibility that the bearer should be identical with its own proper part-hence is no substantive impossibility. But for many genuine contraries Armstrong's analysis fails; their incompatibility cannot be reduced to facts of …

Nectar Preference And Predator Avoidance Of Hummingbirds, September 1999, Michael Steinbeiss Sep 1999

Nectar Preference And Predator Avoidance Of Hummingbirds, September 1999, Michael Steinbeiss

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

I studied feeding preferences of hummingbirds in the presence and absence of a simulated predator at feeders with varied nectar concentration. Using nectar concentration of 15% and 25% with and without predators, I counted visits over eleven sessions of one hour apiece. I found no significant patterns in number of visits (p= .379) or number of species visiting (p= 0.413) across all treatments. The hummingbirds showed no avoidance of the predator nor preference for nectar concentration. Although no statistically significant patterns were found, these findings are biologically relevant because they indicate possible behavioral responses to fragmentation and environmental disturbances.

Objective:

To determine the prevalence of Hodgkin’s disease (HD) and its various subtypes in children and adults and assess the use of immunohistochemical (IHC) studies in confirming HD cases and excluding its close mimicries/look-alikes.

Material and Methods:

All 265 Hodgkin’s disease cases diagnosed at The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi over the last 6 years (July 1991 - July 1997) were included. Of these 219 were diagnosed on routine H&E examination while in the remaining 46 cases, diagnosis was made after a thorough IHC workup. (This group initially included 161 cases labelled as lymphoproliferative disorder with HD as one of …

Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Among Different Growth Stages Of Cecropia Polyphlebia (Cecropiaceae), September 1999, Mandi Frerking Sep 1999

Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Among Different Growth Stages Of Cecropia Polyphlebia (Cecropiaceae), September 1999, Mandi Frerking

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Mycorrhizal fungi are important in the survival and growth of most plants, tropical trees in particular. Yet little research has been done on the abundance of mycorrhizae throughout the life span of plants. I collected root samples from 15 seedlings, 15 saplings, and 15 adults of Cecropia polyphlebia in order to determine the variance in abundance of mycorrhizae among the three growth stages. Root samples were stained and scored for vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae by comparing the number of infected roots to non-infected roots. Three morphologies of mycorrhizae were observed under examination of stained roots; random, hyphal, and sheathing infection. Two-way ANOVA’s …

Elevational And Vertical Feeding Preferences Of Cloud Forest Butterflies, September 1999, Erin Araujo Sep 1999

Elevational And Vertical Feeding Preferences Of Cloud Forest Butterflies, September 1999, Erin Araujo

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The use of indicator species in conservation biology has proven to be an effective means of gauging the biointegrity of communities and ecosystems. Nymphalid butterflies are excellent bioindicators of forest and forest edge habitats. Their varied microhabitats required during different stages of development make them excellent subjects for studies in vertical and elevational niche partitioning. This study examines the vertical niche partitioning of Nymphalid butterflies along an elevational gradient in the Estación Biológica Reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica. This forest contains both fragmented and continuous forest sections, thus making it a good representation of presently protected forests. The study was …
