Bioavailability And Trophic Transfer Of Humic-Bound Copper From Bacteria To Zooplankton, Emile M. Lores, Jonathan Pennock Oct 1999

Bioavailability And Trophic Transfer Of Humic-Bound Copper From Bacteria To Zooplankton, Emile M. Lores, Jonathan Pennock

School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering

ABSTRACT:

The effect of humic acid (HA) on uptake and transfer of Cu by selected marine organisms from the microbial loop was determined. Bacteria grown with and without 15 µg Cu l-1 and with and without 10 mg Suwannee River Humic Acid (SRHA) l-1 were fed to Uronema sp. The Uronema were subsequently fed to Acartia tonsa to determine the effect of humic acid on the uptake and transfer of Cu from bacteria to copepods. The presence of 10 mg SRHA l-1 reduced Cu uptake in A. tonsa by an average of 54% and significantly reduced the …

Patrick J. Leahy War Victims Fund, Cisr Journal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

In 1989, Sen. Patrick Leahy started a fund to get medical aid to victims of landmines. There are an estimated 100 million unexploded land mines in over 60 countries, where they kill or maim an estimated 26,000 people each year. Vast areas of countries like Cambodia, Bosnia and Angola have become death traps.

Landmine Survivors Network, Cisr Journal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Landmine Survivors Network (LSN) works to help mine victims and their families recover through an integrated program of peer counseling, sports, and social and economic re-integration into their communities. In countries in the developing world where landmines are prevalent, survivors lose more than a leg or arm; they often lose their place as a valued and respected member of their society. LSN works with survivors and their families to support their efforts to retake their place and become productive members of their communities. for example, landmine survivors play a crucial role in landmine education, particularly for children within communities at …

Outbreak Of West Nile-Like Viral Encephalitis -- New York, 1999, Centers For Disease Control And Prevention, Denis Nash

Publications and Research

An outbreak of arboviral encephalitis was first recognized in New York City in late August and has since been identified in neighboring counties in New York state. Although initially attributed to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus based on positive serologic findings in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples using a virus-specific IgM-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the cause of the outbreak has been confirmed as a West Nile-like virus based on the identification of virus in human, avian, and mosquito.

The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols Oct 1999

The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols

Sociology

As we enter the millennium, growing numbers of women and children join the ranks of the homeless around the globe. 1 Common factors contributing to homelessness include the feminization of poverty, a shortage of affordable low-income housing and welfare policies focused on short-term relief. Unique factors include war and political upheaval that produce a mobile population of refugees who are homeless.

In thinking about the corning millennium, feminists are challenged to envision a future where the economics and politics of gender do not inevitably produce poverty and homelessness. Homelessness in women's lives is both a symptom and an outcome of …

Prairie Grasslands: An Undervalued Resource Grass, Cows And Environmental Management On The Canadian Prairies, Jilll S. Vaisey, Peggy Strankman Oct 1999

Prairie Grasslands: An Undervalued Resource Grass, Cows And Environmental Management On The Canadian Prairies, Jilll S. Vaisey, Peggy Strankman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Grasslands are integral to the economic health of Canada's rural prairies, making up 30% of the agricultural land base in Canada's three prairie provinces. These grasslands support agriculture, through grazing of livestock, and recreation, such as hunting and ecotourism. These grasslands are also environmentally significant, providing habitat for native plants and animals. The economic and environmental significance of these grasslands should not be undervalued. Economic opportunities and environmental policies and regulations affect the management of these lands. Current issues that may affect how the prairie is used include the: potential species-at-risk legislation, other initiatives for biodiversity enhancement, greenhouse gas regulations …

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Operations Research, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. Operations Research is an area of industrial engineering concerned with the allocation of scarce resources. One area of operations research is linear programming. Linear programming is a method often used to solve large, complicated problems. These problems often require a manager to determine how to use the company’s limited resources most efficiently.
