Dads Make a Difference is a statewide paternity education project where senior high teens, male and female, are trained to teach a 4-lesson school curriculum about the importance of fathers in children's lives to youth in grades 6-8. Designed to help prevent too-early parenting, the curriculum helps older teens discuss the legal, financial, and emotional responsibilities of parenting with younger youth. The Dads Make a Difference middle school curriculum covers these topics: risks and risky behavior; the legal issues of fatherhood; how involved fathers make a difference in the well-being being of children; and the importance of making responsible decisions.

Service Learning In Alternative Education Settings, Susan Meyers Jan 1999

Service Learning In Alternative Education Settings, Susan Meyers

School K-12

When service learning is part of the curriculum, students become involved in something important and learn that they can make a difference in the world. Based on John Dewey’s (1938) theory of experiential learning, service learning takes the student out of the classroom and into the community. In a 1995 public address, Secretary of Education Richard Riley remarked that “by involving students in hands-on learning, problem solving, and applications of academic knowledge in real settings, service learning can increase students’ academic achievement in challenging subjects and creates a sense of engagement that enhances a student’s motivation to complete school.”

Study Of The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On Tetraselmis Chuii Growth And Morphology, Charles T. Audette Jan 1999

Study Of The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On Tetraselmis Chuii Growth And Morphology, Charles T. Audette

Open Access Master's Theses

Exposure of batch cultures of Tetraselmis chuii to three levels (0.020, 0.126 and 0.217 m W/cm2) of artificial UV-B caused a depression of exponential growth corresponding to UV-B dose. Three UV-B experiments were conducted. Cultures were maintained at 25 °C on a 18L:6D photoperiod for the first two experiments and at 12L: 12D for the last experiment. Growth was measured daily by measuring optical density at a standard wavelength of 750 nm. This was compared periodically with hemacytometer cell counts. Cell morphology (projected cell area, length, width, perimeter, and roundness) was determined by microscopic image analysis, and showed …

A Revision Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Peter D. Endyke Jan 1999

A Revision Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Peter D. Endyke

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Research results indicated the Spiritual Well-being Scale, developed by Ellison and Paloutzian (Paloutzian & Ellison, 1982; Ellison, 1983) suffered from ceiling effects (Ledbetter, et al, 1991). This suggested the Spiritual Well-being Scale might not adequately measure the construct of spiritual well-being, which has implications for the usefulness of the instrument. The purpose of this study was to show that spiritual disciplines are an essential part of spiritual health. Thus, the inclusion of aspects of the spiritual disciplines in the Spiritual Well-being Scale would: 1) reduce the ceiling effects of the scale, 2) increase the variability of the scale, and 3) …

Combating Overpopulation : A Study Of The Population Policies Of China And India, Ariam J. Ferro Jan 1999

Combating Overpopulation : A Study Of The Population Policies Of China And India, Ariam J. Ferro

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

With the world population now at 6 billion, the topic of overpopulation is becoming increasingly important. The planet cannot absorb an infinite number of humans, and steps need to be taken to combat unchecked growth. The thesis begins with a discussion of the problems currently manifesting themselves, including land degradation, water supply loss, farmland appropriation for living space, overfishing, and unequal food distribution. The thesis considers the population policy of China, long criticized by the West for its unusual harshness. In studying its history, though, it can be seen why the Chinese government felt radical steps were necessary. India's policy …

Effect Of Leaf Phosphorus And Potassium Concentration On Chlorophyll Meter Reading In Rice, Shaobing Peng, Arnel L. Sanico, Felipe V. Garcia, Rebecca C. Laza, Romeo M. Visperas, Josue P. Descalsota, Kenneth G. Cassman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Chlorophyll meter (SPAD) is a convenient tool to estimate leaf nitrogen (N) concentration of rice plants. There is no information on the effects of leaf phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) concentration on SP AD readings and on the relationship between SPAD values and leaf N concentration in the literature. In 1996 dry season, cv IR72 was grown at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) under various N, P and K fertilizer combinations. SPAD measurements were made on the topmost fully expanded leaves at mid-tillering and panicle initiation. The leaves were then detached, dried …

First Amendment Imperialisn, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 1999

First Amendment Imperialisn, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Utah Law Review

In a society that has become suspicious of politics and a legal culture that tends to view political struggle as simply an unprincipled, unprofessional and sloppy version of courtroom procedure, the First Amendment principle of abstention has expanded beyond a program of making politics safe to become a primary vehicle in a post-New Deal attempt to reduce the scope of conscious collective control over the market. The First Amendment, understood in this way as a fundamental limitation on the scope of government, has become the locus of a new Lochnerism-or rather, a revival of the old Lochnerism under a new …

Ichthyophthirius Multifiliis Fouquet: Development And Assessment Of In Vitro Systems For Long Term Maintenance, Louise Margaret Hurley Jan 1999

Ichthyophthirius Multifiliis Fouquet: Development And Assessment Of In Vitro Systems For Long Term Maintenance, Louise Margaret Hurley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Twelve isolates of lchthyophthirius multifiliis were successfully established and maintained by serial passage through naive carp, for a maximum of 39 laboratory cycles. The management system employed was such that large numbers of the parasite were available for all investigations. The ability to induce exit of immature trophonts through media incubation was used to confirm events in the initial stages of host colonisation. The normal course of primary infection was also established providing useful criteria for assessing success of the in vitro systems tested. Survival of both theronts and tomonts within selected monophasic media was investigated. Theronts in Eagles Minimum …

Assessment Of The Effects Of Uv-B In Marine Macroalgae: Potential Biomarkers Of Exposure And Effect, Britt Cordi

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Studies were undertaken to investigate the suitability of several molecular and physiological responses as biomarkers of UV-B exposure in several marine macroalgal species. Investigations into the sensitivity of mature plants and the reproductive unicells were also carried out. Furthermore, experiments were conducted to determine the interaction between UV-B radiation and the antifouling compound Irgarol 1051 in both a fouling alga and two non-target algal species. Chlorophyll fluorescence, in vivo thallus absorptance and ion leakage were investigated for their suitability as physiological biomarkers of UV -B exposure in the intertidal alga Enteromorpha intestinalis and the subtidal alga Palmaria palmata. DNA damage …

Dietary Interactions Influencing Feed Intake, Nutrient Utilisation And Appetite Regulation In The Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Ahmet Adem Tekinay Jan 1999

Dietary Interactions Influencing Feed Intake, Nutrient Utilisation And Appetite Regulation In The Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Ahmet Adem Tekinay

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Dietary factors are one of the most significant considerations in the regulation of appetite in fish since dietary nutrient and energy concentration modulate feed intake in the short and longer term. These interactions may also be important from a commercial aspect, since the objective of aquaculture is to obtain maximum growth, feed efficiency and consumer acceptance of the product. This thesis addresses the major dietary components which are likely to influence appetite in rainbow trout. These include dietary lipid level, carbohydrate content and degree of complexity as well as energy density and protein/energy ratio. Experimental data is presented which examines …

This study may provide evidence for the need to implement prevention measures for this at-risk …

The Role Of Qualifying Language On Consumer Perceptions Of Environmental Claims, Thomas J. Maronick, J. Craig Andrews Jan 1999

The Role Of Qualifying Language On Consumer Perceptions Of Environmental Claims, Thomas J. Maronick, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

A copy-test of seven environmental claims on aerosol packages shows that consumers interpret general, unqualified claims (e.g., environmentally friendly or ozone friendly) as meaning the product is safe for the environment in both an absolute (safe) and a relative (safer) sense. These perceptions of environmental safety are enhanced by specific qualifiers for general claims such as No CFCs and general qualifiers for specific claims. In addition, the results show that almost all specific environmental claims improve consumers’ perceptions of the aerosol product relative to general claims for environmental benefits of the product. Implications for marketing and public policy professionals are …

First Amendment Imperialism (A Response To Michael Walzer's Leary Lecture), Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 1999

First Amendment Imperialism (A Response To Michael Walzer's Leary Lecture), Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The First Amendment threatens to swallow up all politics, replacing democratic decision-making based on claims that policies are in the public interest with judicial analysis of the nature of free speech and the distinction between speech and action.

In the manner of classic social contract theory, First Amendment law asserts the separation of the state from the most salient issues of democratic debate. Increasingly, however, it acts as a bar to governmental action not just with regard to the issues of conscience and religious practice with which it began, but far into the realm of economic regulation we thought the …
