The Development Of An Appraisal Instrument And Subsequent Evaluation Of Middle School Science Curricula, Julie Wasmund

Honors Capstones

Within the last few years, standards of education have become an influence on the construction and assessment of school curricula In order to evaluate middle school science programs. a rubric was developed based on the National Science Education Standards and the Illinois Learning Standards for Science. Middle school science curricula were acquired from three different districts: Community Unit District U-46, Naperville School District 203. and DeKalb Community Unit District #428. Each curriculum was perused and evaluated using the rubric. Because a rubric is subjective in its nature, additional comments were made in regards to each district's curriculum. There was variance …

The Effects Of Personality Characteristics And Stress On Physical Illness, Carly A. Andersen Jan 1999

The Effects Of Personality Characteristics And Stress On Physical Illness, Carly A. Andersen

Honors Projects

Recent research has indicated that personality characteristics and stress may influence the incidence of illness (Dreher, 1995). The majority of studies have examined personality characteristics and stress in acutely and chronically ill populations. However, this phenomenon has not been extensively studied in healthy populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among personality characteristics, subjective stress, and physical illness in a sample of undergraduate students. This study tested a moderator model in which personality characteristics interact with stress to influence the incidence of physical illness using hierarchical multiple regression. Study participants included 55 undergraduate students selected from …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Egypt holds a unique place among developing countries due to its longstanding commitment to gather information on the numbers and well-being of its population. But until now, there has never been a systematic effort to gather data on the group of young Egyptians poised between childhood and adulthood—its adolescents. Today, Egypt has the largest cohort of adolescents in its history, more than 13 million boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 19 according to its 1996 census. Their experiences during the transition to adulthood will profoundly affect how the nation makes its transition into the next century. This …

Problem Identification And Priority Setting In Agricultural Research: The Case Of The Eastern Margin Of Central Anatolia, Vedat Uzunlu, Ahmet Bayaner, Surendra P. S. Beniwal

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Since the resources available to research institutes are scarce, and experimentation is the most costly phase of a research program, researchers must make sure that the possible solutions to identified problems have a high chance of success. Consequently, problems should be carefully prioritized for experimentation. Factors limiting increased productivity in crop production in the Eastern Margin of Central Anatolia (EMCA) along with agro-ecological factors, apart from political concern, are agronomic constraints. Limiting factors in livestock production are insufficient feed supply, poor conditions of natural grazing areas, and housing of animals. Increasing the adoption rate of the recommended production practices among …

The Judiciary And Public Choice, Frank B. Cross Jan 1999

The Judiciary And Public Choice, Frank B. Cross

UC Law Journal

Professor Cross challenges the conclusion of many Public Choice theorists that government's judicial branch is more amenable to making good public policy than the legislative or executive branches. These theorists' conclusion is based partly on the notion that lawmakers, perennially concerned about funding reelection campaigns, are more susceptible to narrow special interests than are life-tenured judges. Professor Cross points out, however, that this conclusion ignores aspects of the structure of the judiciary that lend it to manipulation by special interests at the expense of the public interest. Special interests can exercise control over public policy through the judiciary in a …

Modes Of Regulatory Enforcement And The Problem Of Administrative Discretion, Ashutosh Bhagwat Jan 1999

Modes Of Regulatory Enforcement And The Problem Of Administrative Discretion, Ashutosh Bhagwat

UC Law Journal

In addition to regulating different substantive areas, administrative agencies differ in the enforcement systems they use to implement regulatory regimes. In this article, Professor Bhagwat identifies a crucial distinction between ex ante enforcement regimes, which authorize agencies to review, approve, or disapprove of regulated conduct before it occurs, and ex post regimes, which limit agencies to prosecuting and penalizing regulatory violations after they have occurred. Ex ante authority appears in a variety of guises, including licensing schemes, preclearance or preapproval requirements, and certification requirements. Their common feature is that ex ante enforcement regimes place the burden of inertia, delay, and …

Impact Of Drinker Type On Pig Performance, Water Use And Manure Production, Mike Brumm, Jill Heemstra Jan 1999

Impact Of Drinker Type On Pig Performance, Water Use And Manure Production, Mike Brumm, Jill Heemstra

Nebraska Swine Reports

A summer experiment was conducted to examine the impact of drinker design on pig performance, water use and manure volume. Pigs with access to Drik-O-Mat® bowl drinkers had similar daily gains, lower feed intake and improved feed conversion compared to pigs with access to a WaterSwing® nipple drinker. Water use was reduced 24.8 percent for the bowl versus swing drinkers. Manure volume was reduced 21.6 percent for the bowl versus swing drinker. The difference in manure volume is most likely due to a reduction in water wastage. Selection of drinker devices must include consideration of the manure system design and …

Response To Increasing Levels Of Nutrients Fed During Gestation And Lactation To Control And Prolific Gilts, David Casey, Rodger K. Johnson

Nebraska Swine Reports

Normal diets and diets with 50 percent greater amounts of protein, vitamins and certain minerals were fed during the gilt development period through lactation to gilts of lines that differed in litter size. The lines had been developed with 10 generations of genetic selection that resulted in a difference between the prolific line and a randomly selected control line of 2.9 fully formed pigs at birth in first parity sows. However, the large litter size line also had greater numbers of stillborn pigs, smaller pigs at birth and greater pre-weaning mortality. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether …

Effective Assistance: Reconceiving The Role Of The Chief Public Defender, Kim A. Taylor-Thompson Jan 1999

Effective Assistance: Reconceiving The Role Of The Chief Public Defender, Kim A. Taylor-Thompson

Faculty Articles

In recent years, scholars have raised critical questions about the role of public defenders. Some have critiqued the ways that defender offices function, and even openly questioned their continuing need. Still others have examined the visions of defender offices, suggesting that more coherence in their missions might ultimately serve their clients better in the future. But for all their variety, most have presumed that the compelling issues occur in the direct representation of clients. In limiting their sphere of analysis, though, they have ignored fundamental questions about an individual who centrally affects the offices' external policies and internal operations: the …
