The focus teacher, Ms Jenson, a highly regarded classroom teacher, described herself as non-sporty and lacking confidence and expertise in PE teaching. Students in her SEPEP volleyball class were considered less popular and less athletic when compared with those in the other two SEPEP classes. A focus volleyball …

The Response Of Secondary Students From Non-English Speaking Backgrounds To A Visual Arts Course, Jean O. Aitken Jan 1999

The Response Of Secondary Students From Non-English Speaking Backgrounds To A Visual Arts Course, Jean O. Aitken

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Interest in multiculturalism has been expressed by educators for a number of years. Much of the literature concerning multiculturalism in visual arts education calls for the adoption of a culturally inclusive curricula in order to meet the needs of all students. In his consideration of conceptions of curriculum, Eisner (1988) made reference to a preferred body of knowledge which often excludes students from minority groups within society. Many Australian schools are experiencing increases in enrolments of students from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB). These students may themselves be immigrants or the children of one or both parents born in another country. …

This will be explored through the experiential use of colour by the participants. The use of a pre-test questionnaire, post-test questionnaires, observation and de-briefing will be the main research instruments. A pilot study will be used …

Visual Arts History And Visual Arts Criticism : Applications In Middle Schooling, Lisa Paris Jan 1999

Visual Arts History And Visual Arts Criticism : Applications In Middle Schooling, Lisa Paris

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Visual arts history and criticism occupy central positions in visual arts curriculum statements in Western Australia. This status is sustained by the belief that the study of visual arts history and criticism actively contributes to the education of the student as a "whole person". In reality however, rather than attending to the holistic education of students, the application of visual arts history and criticism in Western Australian schools tends to be pragmatic and instrumental - visual arts teachers often use visual art works as "learning aids" because they don't have time, interest or experience in dealing with visual arts works …

The Construction Of A Particular Version Of The Modern Indonesian Women In Contemporary Indonesian Women's Magazines, Rachmah Ida

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis analyses the representation of women in two women’s magazines in Indonesia. It compares and contrasts the representation of women under the New Order Regime (1966-1998) and the Reformasi (reformation) period (1998-1999) through an analysis of the content of Kartini and Femina, between 1992 and 1998. It seeks to understand how changes in the representation of women are specifically related to the social, economic, and political changes in Indonesia. Moreover, by analysing the cultural production of a particular popular media [women’s magazines], this study examines the explicit characteristics of Indonesian women that have been identified as “modern” in the …

A Windows Program For Airfoil Design Using B-Splines, Matthew Maclean Jan 1999

A Windows Program For Airfoil Design Using B-Splines, Matthew Maclean

Theses

The objective of this thesis has been threefold. First, the formulation of splines has been studied and their development into a computer algorithm has been implemented. Splines represent a powerful concept in computer modeling and geometric representation, for, as parametric curves, they provide a compact way to store the information defining a curve or surface. B-splines have been exclusively used in this thesis, although other types of splines exist. The second goal of this thesis was to learn and utilize C++ as a programming tool in the demonstration of B-spline techniques. C++ was chosen because it is object-oriented, and because …

Progressing Towards A Uniform Commercial Code For Electronic Commerce Or Racing Toward Nonuniformity?, Maureen A. O'Rourke Jan 1999

Progressing Towards A Uniform Commercial Code For Electronic Commerce Or Racing Toward Nonuniformity?, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

The Magaziner Report encourages the development of a consistent commercial law environment against which electronic commerce transactions may take place. The author considers the current legal landscape, noting that while many efforts are underway to codify aspects of electronic commerce, these efforts are piecemeal in nature and may lead to the very lack of uniformity against which the Magaziner Report counsels. The author then briefly considers what lessons may be learned from the drafting history of the original U.C.C. as well as proposed Article 2B (now the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act) governing transactions in computer information. She argues that …

Embeddability Of Pseudoline Arrangements And Point Configurations To Eucliean Plane, Javid Huseynov Jan 1999

Embeddability Of Pseudoline Arrangements And Point Configurations To Eucliean Plane, Javid Huseynov

Theses

The present thesis explores embeddability (realizability) properties of pseudoline arrangements, perhaps, the most important mathematical structures in computational geometry. The underlying theme is the use of combinatorial representation of arrangements vs. usual geometric representation to approach the embeddability problem. The combinatorial representation chosen is that of counterclockwise systems (CCsystems) introduced by D.E. Knuth in 1992. CC systems were defined as sets of ordered triples of points that incorporate and obey counterclockwise relations on points in the plane. If a CC system can arise from actual points in the plane, it is called realizable. Not all CC-systems are realizable in plane, …

An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Nucleate Boiling On A Free-Surface, Axi-Symmetric Jet Of Water Impinging Vertically Downward Upon A Heated Copper Suface, Michael Moorhead Jan 1999

An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Nucleate Boiling On A Free-Surface, Axi-Symmetric Jet Of Water Impinging Vertically Downward Upon A Heated Copper Suface, Michael Moorhead

Theses

Local heat transfer measurements were taken for the stagnation region of a free surface, axi-symmetric jet of distilled water impinging upon a heated copper surface. The effect of jet velocity (1 .5m/s < Vn < 3.5m/s) and liquid subcooling (20C < (delta)Tsub^ 75C) were studied on both single-phase and nucleate boiling flow regimes. As expected, the single-phase heat transfer coefficient was directly affected by jet velocity, while subcooling produced only minor changes due to temperature dependent fluid properties. The heat flux required for boiling incipience was directly related to both jet velocity and subcooling, with a significant increase noticed in the event of single-phase temperature overshoot. This temperature excursion was noted at high subcoolings (60C < (delta)Tsub^ 75C), and appeared to increase with jet velocity (Vn = 3.5m/s). The fully developed boiling data was independent of both jet velocity and liquid subcooling, and is correlated by the expression q"=70*ATsat30 with a standard deviation of 1 .31 C. The effect of hysteresis was studied by obtaining data for increasing and decreasing heat fluxes at each condition. With a jet velocity of 3.5 m/s, subcooling of 20C, and heat flux of 2.43 MW/m2, the wall superheat was seen to vary in excess of 8.5C depending on direction of the changing heat flux. A single data point was obtained in the CHF regime at the minimum jet velocity (Vn = 1 .5m/s) and liquid subcooling (delta)TSUb = 20C) at a heat flux of 4.48 MW/m2.

Genetic Algorithm And Tabu Search Approaches To Quantization For Dct-Based Image Compression, Michael Champion Jan 1999

Genetic Algorithm And Tabu Search Approaches To Quantization For Dct-Based Image Compression, Michael Champion

Theses

Today there are several formal and experimental methods for image compression, some of which have grown to be incorporated into the Joint Photographers Experts Group (JPEG) standard. Of course, many compression algorithms are still used only for experimentation mainly due to various performance issues. Lack of speed while compressing or expanding an image, poor compression rate, and poor image quality after expansion are a few of the most popular reasons for skepticism about a particular compression algorithm. This paper discusses current methods used for image compression. It also gives a detailed explanation of the discrete cosine transform (DCT), used by …
