Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden Jan 1999

Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This article addresses two central issues regarding the 1998-99 National Basketball Association (“NBA”) lockout: 1) its impact on labor law doctrine and 2) what it reveals about the state of labor relations in the United States. The author concludes that, while the use of the traditional lockout weapon did not break any new ground in the area of labor law, the unique attributes of the NBA labor dispute provide insight into the condition of the American labor movement and public perceptions of unions. In particular, the author notes that the NBA lockout highlights both the dramatic differences in the power …

Nea V. Finley: A Decision In Search Of A Rationale, Lackland H. Bloom Jr.

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Debate has raged over whether Congress can constitutionally restrict, or at least influence, the ability of the National Endowment for the Arts (“NEA”) to award grants to artists and institutions for the creation or display of art work that a significant segment of the public would consider highly offensive. In the October 1997 Term, the Supreme Court, by an 8-1 margin in NEA v. Finley, upheld section 954(d), a 1991 congressional amendment to the NEA Act that requires the Chairperson of the NEA to ensure that, in establishing regulations and procedures for assessing artistic excellence and artistic merit, “general standards …

Business As Usual: The Dynamics Of Government‐Business Relations In The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Tuck Hong James Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This is an attempt to evaluate the implications of Hong Kong's political transition topost-colonial rule for economic governance in the SAR beyond the 'Beijing versus HongKong' perspective. The article examines the changing government-business dynamics inHong Kong after the reversion by focusing on three inter-related dimensions: economicideology; institutional and policy framework; and the new political environment inpost-colonial Hong Kong. By challenging the assertion that Hong Kong is returning to thepre-Patten colonial order under Chinese management, it argues that economic governancein Hong Kong has always been more complex than has been characterized in the literature.A conceptual framework incorporating the dynamic interplay of …

The Effect Of Antibiotic And Resistance Education On Patient Knowledge, Karen Niemchick Jan 1999

The Effect Of Antibiotic And Resistance Education On Patient Knowledge, Karen Niemchick

Masters Theses

Our society, which has enjoyed the benefits of antibiotics for over fifty years, is now experiencing an increase in bacterial resistance. One contributing factor is a lack of patient understanding about antibiotics resulting in their inappropriate usage. This study examined the effect of patient education in antibiotics and bacterial resistance on patient knowledge.

Adults from various medical facilities (a student health services clinic, an urgent care office, a family practice, and a community convenience sample) were given a ten-question survey designed to assess their knowledge of antibiotics and resistance. Half of the participants were randomly given an educational brochure to …

Health Care Provider Knowledge Of The Immunization Schedule And The Contraindications To Vaccinate, Lisa Huffstutter, Diane Kassuba, Kelly Beschoner

Masters Theses

The purpose to this study was to determine if the current knowledge of Kent county's health care providers contributed to the under immunization of children less than two years of age.

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter

Each morning I wound my way up the steep hill along the deeply rutted dirt path, exchanging daily "maaa's" with five bleating sheep and shouting out, "¡Hola!" in response to the children who gleefully identified me as "¡Gringa!" Women and children, colorful bowls of cooked maize balanced atop their heads, sauntered to and from Maria Elena's where their maize would be ground; at home the dough would be shaped and flattened into tortillas, the mainstay of every meal in the small Guatemalan village of San Juan.

Domestic Violence In The Hyperreal: An Examination Of Race And Ethnicity In "Real Life" Police Drama, Melissa J Monson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This project investigates public representations of domestic violence by highlighting televised reality-based police dramas (e.g., COPS, L.A.P.D.: Life on the Beat, Real Stories of the Highway Patrol, etc.). Specifically, it focuses on the intersection of race, class, and gender in the portrayal of police treatment of victims and suspects of domestic violence. Seventy-two hours (including commercials) of reality based programing were recorded for analysis, making 144 total individual shows and 48 episodes of each program; In general, police officers were portrayed as treating domestic …
