Impact Of Fatherlessness On A Child's Needs Based On Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs, Ivy S. Thompkins Jan 1999

Impact Of Fatherlessness On A Child's Needs Based On Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs, Ivy S. Thompkins

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature review is to provide readers with an insight into one of the things that impacts a child's needs. That one thing, unfortunately, is the absence of a father in his or her life. This paper reviews literature on the different needs (Physiological, Safety, Love and Belongingness, Esteem, and Self-Actualization) that a child has according to Abraham Maslow. After each need has been determined and defined, then the impact of fatherlessness on those needs are discussed. The role of the single mother and society are also mentioned. Guidelines of how fathers, mothers, and society can impact …

Literature Webs In The Literature Based Elementary Reading Program: An Annotated Bibliography, Nancy O'Keefe

Graduate Research Papers

Every classroom is a collection of unique individuals with varying abilities and interests. These differences are especially apparent in the elementary reading classroom. Though individual students are reading at many different levels it is still possible for them to work together and to learn from each other.

It is the purpose of this project to assist the third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers of Karen Acres Elementary School in Urbandale, Iowa through the development of multi-level reading webs. These webs may be used to differentiate instruction for those reading both above and below grade level without segregating students into separate …

The Digital Signature: Your Identity By The Numbers, W. Everett Lupton Jan 1999

The Digital Signature: Your Identity By The Numbers, W. Everett Lupton

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Electronic commerce is the future of business. Today electronic commerce is a $3.6 billion industry. Thousands of businesses use the Internet to buy and sell their wares. As individuals and businesses increasingly use the Internet for commerce, contracts are moving online too. Because electronic commerce is conducted online, it is infeasible to make contracts through the traditional paper method. An electronic contract can be sent halfway across the world in seconds; whereas the same contract on paper would take days or weeks.

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Administrative Procedure, Charles Bonner, John Paul Jones, Henry M. Kohnlein Jan 1999

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Administrative Procedure, Charles Bonner, John Paul Jones, Henry M. Kohnlein

University of Richmond Law Review

Since the last report on developments in Virginia's law of administrative procedure, both her General Assembly and her courts have been busy making new law. This year's General Assembly revamped the Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA"), and made adjustments to laws regulating the periods in which agencies must decide certain types oflicensing cases and promulgate certain procedural regulations. Meanwhile, the courts of the Commonwealth were active in the field, addressing open questions concerning the following subjects: rulemaking, due process, evidence, timeliness, and judicial review.

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Corporate Law, A. Eric Kauders Jr. Jan 1999

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Corporate Law, A. Eric Kauders Jr.

University of Richmond Law Review

Despite its widely held reputation as being a bastion of all things conservative, Virginia has long been a leader on the frontier of corporate and partnership law. As a recent example confirming its progressive reputation, one need look no further than the 1991 passage of legislation permitting the formation of limited liability companies. While the amount ofactivity in corporate law this year was far from notable, the legislation and judicial decisions from the past year continue to demonstrate Virginia's "corporate activism."

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Employment Law, Thomas M. Winn Iii Jan 1999

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Employment Law, Thomas M. Winn Iii

University of Richmond Law Review

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." For both Virginia employers and employees alike, this sentiment rang true over the past year in the employment law arena, with both camps winning and losing battles as they litigated various employment law matters. This article discusses three principal areas where there was substantial activity in Virginia's courts: public policy wrongful discharge claims; negligent hiring, retention, and supervision claims; and the enforcement of noncompetition agreements. Beyond the scope of this article are decisions rendered in other areas of law affecting the employment relationship, including the areas of workers' …

Real-Time Digital Speech Transmission Over The Internet, Angelos Angelopoulos Jan 1999

Real-Time Digital Speech Transmission Over The Internet, Angelos Angelopoulos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes a complete system for real-time digital speech communication over the Internet. A digital speech compressor is described, and a new real-time Internet protocol is designed. We focus on the mathematical representation of the system as well as its implementation providing pseudo-code routines for all components and algorithms. Our contribution stands in a combined solution to the problem that removes undesired properties, such as speech clipping and delay, that appeared in Internet real-time communication systems implemented in the past.

Depictions Of Race: An Analysis Of Local Television News, Colleen M Mccarthy Jan 1999

Depictions Of Race: An Analysis Of Local Television News, Colleen M Mccarthy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the depictions of African Americans and Euro-Americans aired on four local television stations in Las Vegas, Nevada. The study covered a one-week period with a sample set of 20 newscasts and 1,780 individual camera shots. One hypothesis of this study suggested that there are significant differences in the use of camera composition and the coverage of African Americans and Euro-Americans in local television news. Another hypothesis suggested that there are significant differences in the use of camera angles and the depiction of race. A research question examined the number of crime-related stories aired and depictions of African …

Garfield County Resident Perceptions Of The Indirect Effects Of The 2002 Winter Olympics, Cary Michael Deccio Jan 1999

Garfield County Resident Perceptions Of The Indirect Effects Of The 2002 Winter Olympics, Cary Michael Deccio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined rural resident perceptions of a nearby mega-event. Tourism leaders can gauge resident perceptions and thereby plan development in conjunction with the local people, not in spite of them; It is anticipated that the 2002 Winter Olympics will have some impact on Garfield County, Utah. Using social exchange theory, the study sought to better understand public sentiment regarding the upcoming mega-event. Certain resident values were examined in relation to tourism; The results show that some residents perceive that the Olympics will bring opportunities, but most residents do not anticipate any impact from the event. Residents who are economically …

Knowledge Of Aids, Perceived Risk Of Aids, And At-Risk Behaviors Among Older Adults, Cheryl Ann Maes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

By using a questionnaire derived from the Health Belief Model, this study examined older adults' knowledge of AIDS, perceptions of risk to AIDS, and at-risk behaviors. A total of 166 questionnaires were received from the EXCELL and Senior Adult Theater Group members actively enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The results indicated the respondents were knowledgeable about the transmission and seriousness of AIDS but were less knowledgeable about AIDS transmission through casual contact and the medical aspects of AIDS. Although they recognized the seriousness of AIDS, they generally do not believe that they are susceptible to this disease. …

Aids Coalition To Unleash Power: Changing Through Movement, Leadership, And Internet Capabilities, Kendra Mary Blythin Jan 1999

Aids Coalition To Unleash Power: Changing Through Movement, Leadership, And Internet Capabilities, Kendra Mary Blythin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The examination of AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) past and present shows a vivid and often extreme organization, branching from Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC). Both groups were formed by Larry Kramer, who has played a large role in the gay liberation movement in the United States. This study provides a map of the decline of ACT UP with regards to the decline in public fear of AIDS, the resulting decline in public interest, and the ineffective leadership strategies of Larry Kramer. In addition, this study offers a hypothesis for better exposure; a possible symbiotic effect between the …

Stores, Prices, And Currency Substitution, Camera Gabriele, Johannes Winkler Jan 1999

Stores, Prices, And Currency Substitution, Camera Gabriele, Johannes Winkler

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We study endogenous currency substitution in a decentralized trade environment. Sellers maximize profits from sales of imperfectly substitutable goods by posting prices in either one of two currencies. A unique symmetric equilibrium exists where goods are priced only in the local currency. This occurs if foreign trade is sporadic, there is sufficient but not excessive liquidity, and discounting is low. Excess or scarcity of liquidity, however, induces sellers to extract all surplus from buyers. This destroys the monetary equilibrium and shuts down trade. Equilibria with and without currency substitution coexist on some redion of the parameter space, and may be …

Sources Of Dispersion In Inflation Forecasts, John A. Carlson, Neven T. Valev Jan 1999

Sources Of Dispersion In Inflation Forecasts, John A. Carlson, Neven T. Valev

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Cross-section dispersion of expected inflation is often explained by differences in information sets across agents, but there is little empirical evidence attesting to that. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether dispersion in consumer forecasts of inflation is generated by factors such as relative price observations, different perceptions of monetary policy, and personal characteristics. We use unique data from Bulgaria that allow us to examine such effects at the micro level.

Inhibition Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis By Phenolic Compounds, S. S. T. Hua, K. O. Grosjean, J. L. Baker Jan 1999

Inhibition Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis By Phenolic Compounds, S. S. T. Hua, K. O. Grosjean, J. L. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The phenolic compounds acetosyringone, syringaldehyde and sinapinic acid inhibited the biosynthesis of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) by A. flavus. Acetosyringone was the most active among the three compounds, inhibiting aflatoxin level by 82% at 2m mol l-1. The synthesis and accumulation of norsolorinic acid, an aflatoxin biosynthetic intermediate, was also inhibited. These results suggest that at least one step early in the AFB1 biosynthetic pathway is inhibited by the phenolics.

Commentaries, Edip Yuksel Jan 1999

Commentaries, Edip Yuksel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

Symposium: Cannibal Democracies: Human Rights and Democracy in Turkey

The article critiques the paradox of banning political parties in Turkey under the guise of protecting democracy, highlighting the suppression of minority rights, particularly targeting Kurdish identity and religious expression. It argues that Turkey's secularism has become a tool of oppression, denying cultural autonomy to Kurds and radicalizing religious groups by marginalizing them. The author, drawing on personal experience, exposes the systemic discrimination against Kurds and the hypocrisy of labeling Kurdish movements as terrorist, urging international accountability for human rights violations.
