Social And Legal Repercussions Of Latinos' Colonized Mentality, Laura M. Padilla
Social And Legal Repercussions Of Latinos' Colonized Mentality, Laura M. Padilla
Faculty Scholarship
This essay begins by defining internalized oppression and racism and exposing the harms they cause. It dissects the reasons we engage in internalized racism and explains how once exposed, it will be easier to engage in a conscious effort to eradicate internalized racism. It will then describe how the intersectionality of internalized oppression and racism is expressed in the Latino community. The essay will then re-imagine Latino identity without internalized oppression and racism. It will include ideas on how to overcome internalized oppression and racism generally, both at the corporate and individual levels. The essay concludes that exposing internalized oppression …

Faculty Scholarship
The topic of this presentation is supervisory liability in Section 1983 cases. Assume for present purposes that a plaintiff's constitutional rights have been violated - that some state official has acted in violation of the Constitution. The question to be addressed here is whether that state official's supervisors can be held liable for damages stemming from the constitutional violation.

Applying The Ada To Mitigating Measures Cases: A Choice Of Statutory Evils, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Applying The Ada To Mitigating Measures Cases: A Choice Of Statutory Evils, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Faculty Publications
This Article critiques the idea that the ADA should exclude from its coverage people who use mitigating measures, such as medications and medical devices, to alleviate the effects of their mental and physical impairments. After describing the statute as an expansive but flawed tool for combating disability-based discrimination, the Article analyzes a 1999 trilogy of Supreme Court cases holding that in determining whether a person has a disability for purposes of ADA coverage, courts should take account of the ameliorative effects of so-called mitigating measures on the person’s impairments. Through this holding, the Court inappropriately constricted the scope of the …

Evaluation Of Soilless Media Used In Tobacco Float Systems, Robert C. Pearce, Jack M. Zeleznik
Evaluation Of Soilless Media Used In Tobacco Float Systems, Robert C. Pearce, Jack M. Zeleznik
Agronomy Notes
A wide range of soilless media is currently available to tobacco growers utilizing the float system for transplant production. Most of the media are predominantly made up of peat moss with varying amounts of perlite, vermiculite, and coconut fibers (coir). One of the most difficult problems for growers has been inconsistency in the media from year to year. Because peat is a natural product, some year to year variability is unavoidable. However, many manufacturers of soilless media have procedures in place to ensure that the final product is as consistent as possible.

Representación E Inclusión Del Caribe En Los Libros De Texto De Las Escuelas Primarias En Los Estados Unidos, Bárbara C. Cruz
Social Science Education Faculty Publications
This article surveys the most popular elementary school social studies textbooks used in the United States to determine how and to what extent the Caribbean is depicted and included. As a whole, a frequency analysis revealed that inclusion and discussion of the Caribbean are virtually nonexistent, especially in the lower grade levels. Perhaps even more disturbing, however, is that when the region was discussed in some depth, much of the information was incomplete, incorrect, or grossly biased.
