Book Review: The Wheel Of Life: A Memoir Of Living And Dying, Nicole Butz Feb 1999

Book Review: The Wheel Of Life: A Memoir Of Living And Dying, Nicole Butz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is a remarkable, if somewhat unusual, woman. Although her views remain highly controversial and have received much criticism, it is difficult to deny the impact that she and her work have had on contemporary attitudes towards death and on the treatment of the dying and the terminally ill. Kübler-Ross first achieved fame in 1969 with the publication of On Death and Dying. The book is now considered a classic text on the subject and is required reading in many medical and nursing schools, theological seminaries, and university psychology and sociology courses. In the thirty years since its …

Characterization Of The Recd Gene Of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Ms11 And The Effect Of Recd Inactivation On Pilin Variation And Dna Transformation, Stuart A. Hill, M.S. Chausee, J. Wilson

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Pilin antigenic variation in Neisseria gonorrhoeae may result following intrachromosomal recombination between homologous pi/ genes. Despite extensive study, recA is the only previously characterized gene known to be involved in this process. In this study, the gonococcal recD gene, encoding one subunit of the putative RecBCD holoenzyme, was characterized and its role in pilin variation assessed. The complete recD gene of N. gonorrhoeae M S l l was cloned and its nucleotide sequence determined. The gonococcal recD gene complemented a defined Escherichia coli recD mutant, based on plaque formation of bacteriophage 1 and the restoration of ATP-dependent nuclease activity. Inactivation …

Transparency Of Ownership And Control In Germany, Marco Becht, Ekkehart Boehmer Feb 1999

Transparency Of Ownership And Control In Germany, Marco Becht, Ekkehart Boehmer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We first analyze legal provisions relating to corporate transparency in Germany. We show that despite the new securities trading law (WpHG) of 1995, the practical efficacy of disclosure regulation is very low. On the one hand, the formation of business groups involving less regulated legal forms as intermediate layers can substantially reduce transparency. On the other hand, the implementation of the law is not practical and not very effective. We illustrate these arguments using several examples of WpHG filings. To illustrate the importance of transparency, we show next that German capital markets are dominated by few large firms accounting for …

Dispute Resolution In China After Deng Xiaoping: "Mao And Mediation" Revisited, Stanley B. Lubman Feb 1999

Dispute Resolution In China After Deng Xiaoping: "Mao And Mediation" Revisited, Stanley B. Lubman

Hong Yen Chang Center for Chinese Legal Studies

This Article presents portions of a book tentatively entitled "Bird in a Cage: Legal Reform in China After Mao." The book explores the Western vantage point from which I have viewed institutions for dispute resolution, the imprint on them of the traditional and more recent Maoist past, the disorderly context of rapid economic and social change in which they must operate today, and the larger law reforms of which they are part. Against that background it examines the operation of extrajudicial mediation and the courts. The scope of this Article is more limited.

I have not speculated here about appropriate …

Youth In Rural Community Development: High School Survey Researchers In Immokalee, Florida, Andrew Seidl, David Mulkey, Denise Blanton

Journal of Extension

A survey of 209 businesses of Immokalee, Florida was undertaken by 51 students in an effort to increase constructive youth involvement in the community. In view of the recommendations of local leaders and published information, the project involved eight principal and sequential activities: creating an Immokalee business directory; developing a survey; learning elementary statistics; learning and practicing survey techniques; understanding and doing public relations and promotions; making and keeping interview/survey appointments with businesses; presenting results; and conducting pre- and post-test evaluation of student participants. Benefits of the study accrue to the business sector, the schools, the students, and the community …

Century Farm And Ranch Program Honors Historical Farms, Shawn Olsen Feb 1999

Century Farm And Ranch Program Honors Historical Farms, Shawn Olsen

Journal of Extension

The Century Farm and Ranch Program (CFR) provided recognition and honor to farm families that had operated the same land for one hundred years or more. The program was initiated in 1996 as part of the state Centennial celebration. A total of 433 farms and ranches have been honored to date. The CFR recognition includes a gold embossed certificate and a 2 ft. by 3 ft. metal highway sign. The CFR program was also an important tool to tell the non-farm population about agriculture in the state.

The Web Can Be Suitable For Learning, Gary C. Kessler, Ken Rosenblad, Steven D. Shepard

Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach

The authors discuss the advantages and difficulties of Web-based online distance learning. Web-based ODL can and does work for most learners when designed with high levels of interactivity and when cost and access issues can be adequately addressed. However, Web-based ODL requires a fundamental paradigm shift in how we define concepts like education and the classroom.

Shared Information Goods, Yannis Bakos, Erik Brynjolfsson, Douglas Gary Lichtman

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Once purchased, information goods are often shared among groups of consumers. Computer software, for example, can be duplicated and passed from one user to the next. Journal articles can be copied. Music can be dubbed. In this paper, we ask whether these various forms of sharing undermine seller profit. We compare profitability under the assumption that information goods are used only by their direct purchasers, with profitability under the more realistic assumption that information goods are sometimes shared within small social communities. We reach several surprising conclusions. We find, for example, that under certain circumstances sharing will markedly increase profit …
