The Multiple Roles Of Cyk1p In The Assembly And Function Of The Actomyosin Ring In Budding Yeast, Katie Shannon, Rong Li Feb 1999

The Multiple Roles Of Cyk1p In The Assembly And Function Of The Actomyosin Ring In Budding Yeast, Katie Shannon, Rong Li

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The budding yeast IQGAP-like protein Cyk1p/Iqg1p localizes to the mother-bud junction during anaphase and has been shown to be required for the completion of cytokinesis. In this study, video microscopy analysis of cells expressing green fluorescent protein-tagged Cyk1p/Iqg1p demonstrates that Cyk1p/Iqg1p is a dynamic component of the contractile ring during cytokinesis. Furthermore, in the absence of Cyk1p/Iqg1p, myosin II fails to undergo the contraction-like size change at the end of mitosis. To understand the mechanistic role of Cyk1p/Iqg1p in actomyosin ring assembly and dynamics, we have investigated the role of the structural domains that Cyk1p/Iqg1p shares with IQGAPs. An amino …

Solitary Waves For N Coupled Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations, Foek T. Hioe Feb 1999

Solitary Waves For N Coupled Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations, Foek T. Hioe

Physics Faculty/Staff Publications

A hierarchy of exact analytic solitary-wave solutions for N coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations fur which the nonlinear coupling parameters can change continuously and cover many regions is presented. Besides their potentially many practical applications to optical communication and multispecies Bose-Einstein condensates for couplings outside the special integrable cases, these analytically solvable cases for special initial conditions supplement and provide important links to and among the integrable cases.

Images Of/And The Postmodern. Review Of Spectacular Allegories: Postmodern American Writing And The Politics Of Seeing By Josh Cohen, Kathleen Fitzpatrick

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Josh Cohen, in his new book Spectacular Allegories: Postmodern American Writing and the Politics of Seeing, argues that postmodern American novelists ranging from Norman Mailer to Joan Didion, Robert Coover to James Ellroy, do not merely fall into accord with this critique -text good; image bad- but are in fact using the allegorical nature of their encounters with and representations of visual culture as a means of reintroducing the image to history, an attempt to construct a new critical politics of visuality. The possibility of a critical visual agency is raised for Cohen in these writers’ gendered representations of the …
