Legalization Of The Birth Control Pill In Japan Will Reduce Reliance On Abortion As The Primary Method Of Birth Control, Evy F. Mcelmeel
Legalization Of The Birth Control Pill In Japan Will Reduce Reliance On Abortion As The Primary Method Of Birth Control, Evy F. Mcelmeel
Washington International Law Journal
The United Nations has decreed that access to a variety of methods of birth control is a basic human right, that prevention of pregnancy, not termination, is the goal of birth control, and that abortion is an unacceptable method of birth control. Until recently, condoms and the rhythm method were the only legal forms of contraception in Japan. The high failure rates of these methods, coupled with access to abortion on demand, made abortion the de facto primary method of birth control in Japan. The Japanese government's recent decision to end the ban on oral contraceptives will reduce the number …
The Erorsion Of Refugee Rights In Australia: Two Proposed Amendments To The Migration Act, Andrew N. Langham
The Erorsion Of Refugee Rights In Australia: Two Proposed Amendments To The Migration Act, Andrew N. Langham
Washington International Law Journal
The Australian government has proposed two amendments to the Migration Act. The first excludes judicial review of administrative determinations in the immigration context. The second severely limits how and when detained refugees can access information regarding their rights as asylum seekers. Refugees arrive in Australia vulnerable and wholly ignorant of the legal system, and must make their claims for asylum in a politically hostile atmosphere. Current immigration laws protect the integrity of the system by making judicial review of immigration determinations possible in some cases and by giving refugees access to information on the refugee determination process. The proposed amendments …

"He's Not Mr. Right, He's More Like Mr. Now"* Patrifocal And Matrifocal Discourses Among Homeless Mothers In Kentucky, Joanna M. Badagliacco
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
What strategies do homeless mothers use to cope with their situations? In-depth interviews in Kentucky of 68 homeless mothers with children revealed similarities and differences among the women, as well as a con tinuum of approaches to gender relations. Although differing in race/ethnicity and place of origin (rural vs. urban) among other factors, the overwhelming majority of the women experienced unstable and abusive households and social relationships while growing up. Most did not complete high school and had their first births while still teenagers. Moreover, two primary approaches to gender relations were observed. These approaches delimit a continuum along which …

A New Model Of The Business School/Student Relationship And An Example Of Its Implementation, Leon Winer
A New Model Of The Business School/Student Relationship And An Example Of Its Implementation, Leon Winer
Faculty Working Papers and Articles
Business schools have used two models of their relationship with students: student as product and student as customer. Neither is satisfactory because neither leads to the development of skills and networks that students need for success in business. A model of "Student as Achiever" is proposed and its implications are discussed. For preparing students to be achievers, Experiential Learning and Authentic Learning methods show promise as being superior to the traditional lecture method. End-of-term surveys show that students place the highest value on the most authentic learning experience, and that the value assigned to exams increases when the exams are …

Stability Of Self-Similar Solutions For Van Der Waals Driven Thin Film Rupture, Thomas P. Witelski, Andrew J. Bernoff
Stability Of Self-Similar Solutions For Van Der Waals Driven Thin Film Rupture, Thomas P. Witelski, Andrew J. Bernoff
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Recent studies of pinch-off of filaments and rupture in thin films have found infinite sets of first-type similarity solutions. Of these, the dynamically stable similarity solutions produce observable rupture behavior as localized, finite-time singularities in the models of the flow. In this letter we describe a systematic technique for calculating such solutions and determining their linear stability. For the problem of axisymmetric van der Waals driven rupture (recently studied by Zhang and Lister), we identify the unique stable similarity solution for point rupture of a thin film and an alternative mode of singularity formation corresponding to annular “ring rupture.”

Structural And Chemical Changes In Leaves Of Cecropia (Cecropiaceae) With Plant Age, September 1999, James J. Garnsey
Structural And Chemical Changes In Leaves Of Cecropia (Cecropiaceae) With Plant Age, September 1999, James J. Garnsey
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Many tropical plants show age-related morphological and chemical changes that are adaptive to a particular environment. Generally, leaves of young plants have drip tips and increased secondary compounds while leaves of mature plants lack drip tips and are tougher. Cecropia polyphlebia and Cecropia obtusifolia are common pioneer tree species in Monteverde, Costa Rica that exhibit morphological and chemical changes with age. Here, I study how water content, herbivory, toughness and concentration of alkaloids change in the leaves of Cecropia as the plants age. Leaves from young, medium and mature aged plants were collected from gaps near the Estación Biológica Monteverde …
