Archival Orientation Interviews As Social Interactions, Michael R. Hill Jan 1999

Archival Orientation Interviews As Social Interactions, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

For social scientists, every orientation interview is inherently an opportunity for systematic observation, analysis, and critique. Consider, by way of contrast, a hypothetical committee of mathematicians who visit archival repositories searching for documentary materials to display during the upcoming centennial celebration of the Mathematics Department at their home university. As mathematicians, orientation interviews are simply means to their pragmatic ends. For social scientists, however, especially for qualitative sociologists such as myself (Hill 1993), the situation is more complex. For some of us, every social interaction is potentially a source of sociological insight (Deegan and Hill 1987). Thus, every orientation interview …

Pre-Baiting For Increased Acceptance Of Zinc Phosphide Baits By Voles: An Assessment Technique, Ray Sterner Jan 1999

Pre-Baiting For Increased Acceptance Of Zinc Phosphide Baits By Voles: An Assessment Technique, Ray Sterner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

During a product-performance test of 2% zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) steam-rolled-oat groats (11.2 kg ha-1) to control voles (Microtus spp) in alfalfa (Medicago sativa), randomly located, brushed-dirt plots were used to assess broadcast distribution and remova/acceptance of placebo particles. Results showed that the Spyker® Model-75 Spreaders were calibrated adequately, with placebo baits broadcast uniformly onto plots [x ± SD = 3.5 (±2.7) groats 930 cmp-1]. Acceptance of the placebos by voles increased rapidly - 28% and 60% by 24h and 48h post-broadcast, respectively. Analyses of variance confirmed the uniformity (non-significance) …

Alpha-Chloralose Immobilization Of Rock Doves In Ohio, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans Jan 1999

Alpha-Chloralose Immobilization Of Rock Doves In Ohio, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

To improve capture efficacy of rock doves (Columba livia) in nuisance situations, we reevaluated the effectiveness of three dosages (60, 120 and 180 mg/kg) of alpha-chloralose (AC). Responses to immobilization using 180 mg/kg AC also were compared in rock doves deprived of food for 16 hr and not food deprived. Mean (±SE) time to first effects (33 ± 2 min) and mean time to capture (94 ± 5 min) were significantly less for rock doves receiving 180 mg/kg than for rock doves receiving lower dosages (≥53 ± 3 min and ≥153 ± 17 min, respectively). Ten, 10, and …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Portions of penis and prepuce were collected from 24 bulls with current or recent Tritrichomonas foetus infection. Epididymides were collected from seven of the bulls, and seminal vesicles and prostate were collected from four. Following immunohistochemical staining with two monoclonal antibodies (34.7C4.4 and TF1.15) prepared against T. foetus surface antigens, trichomonads were identified in sections from 15 of the bulls. Organisms were most often located in penile crypts in the midshaft and caudal regions and less often in preputial crypts. Trichomonads were not observed in sections from other genitalia or in subepithelial tissue. T. foetus antigen, however, was present in …

Dynamical System Representation Of Open Address Hash Functions, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Gregory L. Heileman, Bernard M. Moret, Bradley J. Smith Jan 1999

Dynamical System Representation Of Open Address Hash Functions, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Gregory L. Heileman, Bernard M. Moret, Bradley J. Smith

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates how a broad collection of hash function families can be expressed as dynamical systems. We then show that this representation can be useful for analysis. In particular, we provide an analysis which proves that a widely-used family of double hash functions will transform any initial distribution of keys into the uniform distribution over the table space.

Boundaries And Possibilities Of Humanistic Higher Education In The Late Holy Roman Empire, Charles E. Mcclelland Jan 1999

Boundaries And Possibilities Of Humanistic Higher Education In The Late Holy Roman Empire, Charles E. Mcclelland

History Faculty Publications

English original of a conference paper whose purpose is not to say much significantly new about "graduates of European artistic faculties" 16-18 Centuries, but to point out boundaries of meaning about what scholars do discover. Perhaps by deconstructing and analyzing such heuristic categories of "professional studies", "units of socialization" and the "certification of knowledge" we can gain new insights into the great transformation that universities were beginning to undergo already in the last centuries of the Holy Roman Empire.

Better Implementation Of Calculators In The Classroom Through Parental Involvement, Jennifer S. Kemp Jan 1999

Better Implementation Of Calculators In The Classroom Through Parental Involvement, Jennifer S. Kemp

Theses : Honours

This study examined the changes in parental attitudes towards calculator use in the classroom during their involvement in calculator activities with students. The study also investigated the effectiveness of involving parents in mathematics activities as a support mechanism for calculator implementation in the school as a whole. A class of year 6 students and their parents were chosen for the study. Parents were first given a questionnaire to evaluate their attitudes towards the use of calculators in schools. Interested parents were consequently invited to participate in one fifty-minute lesson per week for eight weeks. During these lessons, calculators were used …

Managing Mountain Bike Impacts In The South West Of Western Australia : Combining Biophysical Impact Studies With Rider Preferences For Better Trail Design, Ute Goeft Jan 1999

Managing Mountain Bike Impacts In The South West Of Western Australia : Combining Biophysical Impact Studies With Rider Preferences For Better Trail Design, Ute Goeft

Theses : Honours

This thesis examines the environmental impacts of mountain bikes on trails in the southwest of Western Australia and the preferences, perceptions, trail use and demographics of mountain bike riders in that region. This information is important for resource managers and trail developers to ensure that the trails that are provided and planned for mountain bike use in the region are environmentally appropriate and acceptable to users. The environmental impacts were examined through biophysical studies, which investigated soil loss, soil compaction and vegetation damage on and adjacent to mountain bike trails over a period of six months. A mountain bike racing …

Implementing Flexible Software Techniques In A 4gl Environment, Stephen O'Connor Jan 1999

Implementing Flexible Software Techniques In A 4gl Environment, Stephen O'Connor

Theses : Honours

Today more IT professionals arc employed on the maintenance of existing software applications than are employed to develop new systems. Why is there such a need for this maintenance? Part of the problem is that developers have traditionally seen system requirements as fixed from the time they have been 'signed off. In reality requirements arc dynamic and subject to change as an organisation's environment changes. Flexible software techniques recognise that software requirements are subject to future changes. Flexibility is seen as an important design goal criterion with "true" or "strong" flexibility implying that an application's behaviour can be altered without …

Salinity And Hydrology Of The Fence Road Catchment : A Focus Catchment Of The Blackwood Basin, Ben Whitfield Jan 1999

Salinity And Hydrology Of The Fence Road Catchment : A Focus Catchment Of The Blackwood Basin, Ben Whitfield

Resource management technical reports

It is the clearing of native vegetation and replacement with lower water-use annual crops and pastures that is responsible for the developing salinity problem. Traditional farming practices have led to increased recharge to the groundwater systems resulting in increased storage and/or greater areas or rates of discharge. Groundwater monitoring has revealed variable rates of rise throughout the Fence Road catchment, from static to 0.6 metres per year, in a period of average to below average rainfall.

The Digital Signature: Your Identity By The Numbers, W. Everett Lupton Jan 1999

The Digital Signature: Your Identity By The Numbers, W. Everett Lupton

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Electronic commerce is the future of business. Today electronic commerce is a $3.6 billion industry. Thousands of businesses use the Internet to buy and sell their wares. As individuals and businesses increasingly use the Internet for commerce, contracts are moving online too. Because electronic commerce is conducted online, it is infeasible to make contracts through the traditional paper method. An electronic contract can be sent halfway across the world in seconds; whereas the same contract on paper would take days or weeks.

The Confusion Of Causes And Reasons In Forensic Psychology: Deconstructing Mens Rea And Other Mental Events, Joel R. Cornwell Jan 1999

The Confusion Of Causes And Reasons In Forensic Psychology: Deconstructing Mens Rea And Other Mental Events, Joel R. Cornwell

University of Richmond Law Review

The public perception that criminal conduct is increasingly excused on psychological grounds, notwithstanding a markedly small statistical success rate of diminished capacity defenses, evinces misplaced frustration over a broader cultural reluctance or inability to assign moral blame. Psychology is seen as feeding a kind of determinism that rationalizes evil behavior and precludes retributive punishment as a matter of scientific principle. This perception is accurate to the degree that it reveals our legal system's fundamental confusion of purposes in judging and explaining criminal behavior. This confusion is engendered by the indeterminacy of language, which entangles the verificationist mode and purpose of …

Real-Time Digital Speech Transmission Over The Internet, Angelos Angelopoulos Jan 1999

Real-Time Digital Speech Transmission Over The Internet, Angelos Angelopoulos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes a complete system for real-time digital speech communication over the Internet. A digital speech compressor is described, and a new real-time Internet protocol is designed. We focus on the mathematical representation of the system as well as its implementation providing pseudo-code routines for all components and algorithms. Our contribution stands in a combined solution to the problem that removes undesired properties, such as speech clipping and delay, that appeared in Internet real-time communication systems implemented in the past.

The Optimal Room Inventory Of Las Vegas Casino Hotels, Ming Chen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Room oversupply is a recent concern for Las Vegas gaming industry. The purpose of this research is to quantify this problem and try to determine whether room oversupply exists and if it does, how serious the problem is in the lodging market of Las Vegas casino hotels (the subject market). A room inventory model is developed for estimating the optimal room inventory of the subject market. The real room inventory of the past nine fiscal years and the planned room inventory of the next two fiscal years are compared with the optimal room inventory. The research finds that the room …

Demonstrations For Children Of All Age- The Cork Canon, S. Thornton

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Demonstrations are one of the most useful techniques for teaching science to anyone, regardless of age. Demonstrations attract attention and normally make the observer want to learn more about what is happening. This paper reports on The Cork Cannon, one of the favorite demonstrations done in the demonstration road show, Phun Physics, that travels to schools within about 60 miles of Charlottesville. The Department of Physics and the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education sponsor this demonstration show, which was seen by about 8000 persons during the last school year. Although quite simple, the Cork Cannon demonstration is rich …
