Field Sampling And Necropsy Examination Of Fish, A. S. Kane, A. Baya, R. Reimschuessel, K. M. St. Pé, C. A. Poukish, C. P. Driscoll Jan 1999

Field Sampling And Necropsy Examination Of Fish, A. S. Kane, A. Baya, R. Reimschuessel, K. M. St. Pé, C. A. Poukish, C. P. Driscoll

Virginia Journal of Science

This paper presents an overview of observational and fish sampling techniques for investigating fish lesions, morbidity and mortality. These sampling techniques and investigations are much like detective work and require attention to detail, common sense, technical proficiency and experience. To solve the mystery of a fish kill, the investigator must use available evidence and clues to piece together a series of events that often have long since passed. The cause of these field events may be chemical, biological or physical; more often, it is some combination of these. An initial categorization approach may be used to reduce the great number …

Pcr And Fish Detection Extends The Range Of Pfiesteria Piscicida In Estuarine Waters, P. A. Rublee, J. Kempton, E. Schaefer, J.M. Burkholder, H. B. Glasgow Jr., David Oldach Jan 1999

Pcr And Fish Detection Extends The Range Of Pfiesteria Piscicida In Estuarine Waters, P. A. Rublee, J. Kempton, E. Schaefer, J.M. Burkholder, H. B. Glasgow Jr., David Oldach

Virginia Journal of Science

PCR and fluorescent in situ hybridization probes were used to assay for the presence of the dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida in 170 estuarine water samples collected from New York to northern Florida. 20% of samples tested positive for the presence of P. piscicida, including sites where fish kills due to Pfiesteria have occurred and sites where there was no historical evidence of such events. The results extend the known range of P. piscicida northward to Long Island, New York. The results also suggest that P. piscicida is common, and normally benign, inhabitatant of estuarine waters of the eastern US.

The Efficiency Of Resource Allocation And Productivity In The Agricultural Farms In Kazova Region Of Tokat Province, Yaşar Akçay, Kemal Esengün Jan 1999

The Efficiency Of Resource Allocation And Productivity In The Agricultural Farms In Kazova Region Of Tokat Province, Yaşar Akçay, Kemal Esengün

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study covers agricultural farms in Kazova area of Tokat province. The main material of the study was the data obtained from 134 farms by survey in period of 1994- 1995. In the study, translog production fonction and Allen Partial Elasticity of Substitution (AES) in order to determine input-input relation were used. Estimated equations analyzed econometrictly and marginal analysis belonging to the each estimated equations which are marginal production elasticity. Production elasticity of function, coefficient of efficiency and AES were analyzed and commented. In the light of findings, it can be said that farming income might be increased by efficient …

Examination Of Long-Term (1929-1990) Daily Minimum, Mean And Maximum Temperature Values Of Adana By Time Series Analysis, Ali̇ Yücel, Fati̇h Topaloğlu Jan 1999

Examination Of Long-Term (1929-1990) Daily Minimum, Mean And Maximum Temperature Values Of Adana By Time Series Analysis, Ali̇ Yücel, Fati̇h Topaloğlu

Climatic changes observed historically need to be known accurately in order to understand the present climatic conditions and to estimate climatic changes to be occur in future. In studies to be done to determine temporal variation of climatic variables, it is accepted that changes can be defined certainly in deterministic methods, and the result of the statistical methods have also spot errors due to the shortage of observation periods and random of observations. In this respect, a model presenting interested climate variable is developed depending on present short observation period. Then, parameters related to the developed model are estimated and …

A New Approach Oriented To New Reallotment Model Based On Block Priority Method In Land Consolidation, Musa Avci Jan 1999

A New Approach Oriented To New Reallotment Model Based On Block Priority Method In Land Consolidation, Musa Avci

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, a new model, which is used in determining of reallotment plan in land consolidation, have been presented and this model have been applied to Salihli-Yılmaz Village. Then, the results of this model have been compared with results of the conventional method. This method takes account the maximization of the amount of land non-exchanged and is based on linear programming. According to the results from this study, the average number of plots per farm decreases to 1 in plan obtained from this model, while the amount of the non-exchanged land were obtained as high as conventional methods.

Monitoring The Effects Of Indoor Pollution Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Rachel Farrell Jan 1999

Monitoring The Effects Of Indoor Pollution Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Rachel Farrell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy {FTIR) was used to develop an effective way to monitor indoor pollution and to observe the effects of such indoor pollution under various conditions of the ventilation system of McCollum Science Hall of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. This was done by monitoring the absorbance of acetone as it evaporated over time, and the data were used to create concentration vs. time plots. Several parameters from these plots were used to judge the ventilation system, with some general conclusions including that having the system on reduces peak time and end time. Also, the …

The Association Of Fluid Intake With Total Natural-Cause Mortality, Coronary Heart Disease And Fatal Stroke, Jacqueline Chung Lun Chan Jan 1999

The Association Of Fluid Intake With Total Natural-Cause Mortality, Coronary Heart Disease And Fatal Stroke, Jacqueline Chung Lun Chan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hypohydration may be more widespread than realized since it does not always arouse a sense of thirst. When thirst is felt, it is often ignored, or satisfied before euhydration is achieved. There is growing evidence indicating that hypohydration contributes to acute and chronic illnesses, and to rheological factors associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. Therefore the relationship of fluid intake with risk of total natural-cause mortality, CHD and stroke death was examined using data on 34,192 white, non-Hispanic participants in the Adventist Health Study.

Among the 27,342 reporting no CHD, stroke or diabetes at baseline, during six years …

Body Weight And Mortality Among Adults Who Never Smoked, Pramil N. Singh Jan 1999

Body Weight And Mortality Among Adults Who Never Smoked, Pramil N. Singh

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Most prospective studies identify an increased mortality risk for adults of high body mass index (> 27 kg/m2) that is commonly attributed to the effects of excess body fat, and also identify an increased mortality risk for adults of low body mass index (< 21 kg/m2), an association that, if causal among healthy adults, is without adequate pathophysiologic support.

In this dissertation, I have conducted three studies that continue the investigation of adiposity in relation to mortality among never-smoking adults of the California Seventh-day Adventist population. Among never-smoking adults of the Adventist Mortality Study (1960-1985), the relation between …
