The Professional Beliefs And The Conditions That Support Integrated Curriculum In A New England Middle School, Cheryl Lynn Davis Jan 1999

The Professional Beliefs And The Conditions That Support Integrated Curriculum In A New England Middle School, Cheryl Lynn Davis

Educational Studies Dissertations

Research on the best practices at the middle school level suggests that early adolescent students need an educational environment that is unlike elementary or high school. Young people between the ages of 10 and 14 are experiencing rapid changes in their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. In order to meet these needs, middle school curriculum must provide opportunities for students to broaden their knowledge base, explore areas of interest, and acquire a sense of self as they seek to understand their place within the larger society. An effective way to reach such goals, at the middle level, is through …

Service-Learning: An Education Strategy For Preventing School Violence, Carol Kinsley Jan 1999

Service-Learning: An Education Strategy For Preventing School Violence, Carol Kinsley

Special Topics, General

Recent headlines provide ample testimony of dramatic, heart-stopping incidents of youth violence - at every socioeconomic level, in every age group, and across rural, suburban and urban areas. What were once seen as isolated outbursts have multiplied in such a way that they no longer can be thought of as random incidents.

Many factors underlie violent behavior in schools. Easy access to guns, violent movies and video games, poor and even destructive parenting, social upheaval in schools, minority status and, not least, violence in the home arc all potential "enablers" of violent behavior on the part of students. But these …

Service-Learning And School Curriculum, Amy Yip Ah-May Jan 1999

Service-Learning And School Curriculum, Amy Yip Ah-May

Special Topics, General

Service-Learning extends the learning process from the classroom to the community, which becomes a supplementary resource to facilitate teaching and learning. This paper uses fragments of reflections to illustrate how Service-Learning course participants learn through the community-service projects and how they feel about their experiences as project leaders. The literature used provides a rich source of data about the meaning of Service-Learning and empirical evidences of the educational effects of learning through serving others. This paper argues that the Hong Kong school curriculum is examination driven and focused on the academic. There is a neglect in the social, moral and …

Using Omissive Faults To Obtain Local Convergence In Partially Connected Networks, M. H. Azadmanesh, A. W. Krings Jan 1999

Using Omissive Faults To Obtain Local Convergence In Partially Connected Networks, M. H. Azadmanesh, A. W. Krings

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Approximate Agreement is an important issue in faulttolerant distributed computing where non-faulty processes exchange and vote upon their local values, to arrive at values which are within the range of the initial values of the nonfaulty processes and within a predefined tolerance of each other. Results to date in Approximate Agreement, however, are not capable of exploiting omission faults. Omission faults are presumed not to occur or a predefined default value is substituted for those values not received, or they are globally discarded before the voting algorithm executes. As a result, hybrid fault models can not differentiate between omissive and …

Service Learning In Alternative Education Settings, Susan Meyers Jan 1999

Service Learning In Alternative Education Settings, Susan Meyers

School K-12

When service learning is part of the curriculum, students become involved in something important and learn that they can make a difference in the world. Based on John Dewey’s (1938) theory of experiential learning, service learning takes the student out of the classroom and into the community. In a 1995 public address, Secretary of Education Richard Riley remarked that “by involving students in hands-on learning, problem solving, and applications of academic knowledge in real settings, service learning can increase students’ academic achievement in challenging subjects and creates a sense of engagement that enhances a student’s motivation to complete school.”

The Nature And Structure Of Impediments To Edi Adoption And Integration: A Survey Of Small- And Medium-Sized Enterprises, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Electronic data interchange (EDI) is a key enabling component of business-to-business electronic commerce. As firms adopt and integrate advanced information technologies such as EDI, it is important to understand the nature of challenges faced by them. This becomes especially important given the fact that nearly 99.7% of all businesses in the US can be classified as small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). As costs and risks associated with implementing new information technologies decrease, these firms will surely need to focus their attention on managing impediments associated with new technology implementation and learn from the failures or successes of their peer. Consequently, …

Analysis Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery Under Moderate-Rate Discharge, Mukul Jain, Ganesan Nagasubramanian, Rudolph G. Jungst, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

A one-dimensional mathematical model of a spirally wound lithium/thionyl chloride primary battery is developed and used for parameter estimation and design studies. The model formulation is based on the fundamental conservation laws using porous electrode theory and concentrated solution theory. The model is used to estimate the transference number, the diffusion coefficient, and the kinetic parameters for the reactions at the anode and the cathode as a function of temperature. These parameters are obtained by fitting the simulated capacity and average cell voltage to experimental data over a wide range of temperatures (–55 to 49°C) and discharge loads (10-250 ). …

The ~1.08 Ga anorogenic, A-type Pikes Peak batholith (Front Range, central Colorado) is dominated by coarse-grained, biotite ± amphibole syenogranites and minor monzogranites, collectively referred to as Pikes Peak granite (PPG). The batholith is also host to numerous small, late-stage plutons that have been subdivided into two groups (e.g. Wobus, 1976. Studies in Colorado Field Geology, Colorado School of Mines Professional Contributions, Colorado): (1) a sodic series (SiO2 = ~44–78 wt%; K/Na = 0.32–1.36) composed of gabbro, diabase, syenite/quartz syenite and fayalite and sodic amphibole granite; and (2) a potassic series (SiO2 = ~70–77 wt%; K/Na = 0.95–2.05), …

A Study Of Certain Fourth Order Linear Differential Equations, Bachyen Dao Jan 1999

A Study Of Certain Fourth Order Linear Differential Equations, Bachyen Dao

Theses (Pre-2016)

The main goal is to study the pair of fourth order linear differential equations. (E) y"" - P(x)y = ° and (E+) y"" + P(x)y = ° Where P = P (x) is a positive, continuous function defined on [0, (0). These two equations have always been studied separately. The fact that either all the solutions of (E+) are oscillatory or all are non-oscillatory, while (E) always has a non-oscillatory solution, provides a demonstration of the apparent independence of the two equations in terms of oscillation. However, contrary to this evidence, it is shown that there is a relationship between …

A Compensated Acoustic Actuator For Systems With Strong Dynamic Pressure Coupling, Charles Birdsong, Clark J. Radcliffe Jan 1999

A Compensated Acoustic Actuator For Systems With Strong Dynamic Pressure Coupling, Charles Birdsong, Clark J. Radcliffe

Mechanical Engineering

This study improves the performance of a previously developed acoustic actuator in the presence of an acoustic duct system with strong pressure coupling. The speaker dynamics and the acoustic duct dynamics are first modeled separately. The two systems are then coupled, and the resulting system is modeled. A velocity sensor is developed and used in feedback compensation. The resulting speaker system has minimal magnitude and phase variation over a 20–200 Hz bandwidth. These conclusions are verified through experimental results.

On The Decomposition Of Order-Separable Posets Of Countable Width Into Chains, Gary Gruenhage, Joe Mashburn Jan 1999

On The Decomposition Of Order-Separable Posets Of Countable Width Into Chains, Gary Gruenhage, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

partially ordered set X has countable width if and only if every collection of pairwise incomparable elements of X is countable. It is order-separable if and only if there is a countable subset D of X such that whenever p, q ∈ X and p < q, there is r ∈ D such that p ≤ r ≤ q. Can every order-separable poset of countable width be written as the union of a countable number of chains? We show that the answer to this question is "no" if there is a 2-entangled subset of IR, and "yes" under the Open Coloring Axiom.

For the nth order nonlinear differential equation y (n)(t)=f(y(t)), t [0,1], satisfying the multipoint conjugate boundary conditions, y (j)(ai) = 0,1 i k, 0 j n i - 1, 0 =a 1 a 2 a k = 1, and i=1 k n i =n, where f: [0, ) is continuous, growth condtions are imposed on f which yield the existence of at least three solutions that belong to a cone.

Kant And Feminism, Kurt Mosser Jan 1999

Kant And Feminism, Kurt Mosser

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The juxtaposition of Kant's name with "feminism" seems almost designed to invite scorn and indignation. As we will soon see, throughout his career Kant made a variety of noxious and distasteful comments about women. As we will also see, Kant has been regarded, with Descartes, as the philosopher chiefly responsible for providing modern Western philosophy with a picture of reason that has been employed in a variety of ways oppressive to women. Yet the reader of Kant's works in practical philosophy, specifically the Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals and the Critique of Practical Reason, could very well harbor a …

Reconciled Platoon Accommodations At Traffic Signals, Jay Wasson, Montasir Abbas, Darcy M. Bullock, Avery Rhodes, Chong Kang Zhu

JTRP Technical Reports

The use of microprocessor-based traffic signal controllers introduced in the 1960s has allowed for the development of many new strategies to make traffic signal systems more responsive to traffic conditions. Many efforts have focused on the development of real-time, adaptive control strategies. While some of these strategies have been shown to improve intersection performance, there are several factors that have limited their deployment. Some of these include substantial capital cost, complicated calibration procedures, and the reluctance of practicing engineers to deploy strategies radically different from those currently in use. Therefore, lower cost strategies that are compatible with existing infrastructure continue …
