Development Of Regional Climate Scenarios Using A Downscaling Approach, David Easterling Jan 1999

Development Of Regional Climate Scenarios Using A Downscaling Approach, David Easterling

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

As the debate on potential climate change continues, it is becoming increasingly clear that the main concerns to the general public are the potential impacts of a change in the climate on societal and biophysical systems. In order to address these concerns researchers need realistic, plausible scenarios of climate change suitable for use in impacts analysis. It is the purpose of this paper to present a downscaling method useful for developing these types of scenarios that are grounded in both General Circulation Model simulations of climate change, and in situ station data. Free atmosphere variables for four gridpoints over the …

Evidence Of A Feeding Aggregation Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) Around Kodiak Island, Alaska, Janice Waite, Marilyn Dahlheim, Roderick Hobbs, Sally Mizroch Jan 1999

Evidence Of A Feeding Aggregation Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) Around Kodiak Island, Alaska, Janice Waite, Marilyn Dahlheim, Roderick Hobbs, Sally Mizroch

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The known summer feeding range of the North Pacific humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) extends from California, along the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, into the Bering Sea, along the Aleutian Islands, the Sea of Okhotsk (Tomilin 1957), and to northern Japan (Rice 1977). In feeding areas of the northeastern Pacific Ocean, humpback whale photoidentification research has been concentrated off California (Calambokidis et al. 1993), southeastern Alaska (Darling and McSweeney 1985, Baker et al. 1986, 1992; Perry et al. 1990), Prince William Sound in Alaska (von Ziegesar 1992), the Oregon and Washington coasts (Calambokidis et al. 1993), and …

Late Quaternary Loess In Northeastern Colorado: Part Ii—Pb Isotopic Evidence For The Variability Of Loess Sources, John N. Aleinikoff, Daniel R. Muhs, Rebecca R. Sauer, C. Mark Fanning Jan 1999

Late Quaternary Loess In Northeastern Colorado: Part Ii—Pb Isotopic Evidence For The Variability Of Loess Sources, John N. Aleinikoff, Daniel R. Muhs, Rebecca R. Sauer, C. Mark Fanning

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A new application of the Pb isotopic tracer technique has been used to determine the relative importance of different silt sources for late Wisconsin loess in the central Great Plains of eastern Colorado. Samples of the Peoria Loess collected throughout the study area contain K-feldspar derived from two isotopically and genetically distinct sources: (1) glaciogenic material from Early and Middle Proterozoic crystalline rocks of the Colorado province, and (2) volcaniclastic material from the Tertiary White River Group exposed on the northern Great Plains. Pb isotopic compositions of K-feldspar in loess from two dated vertical sections (at Beecher Island and Last …

Biogenic Silica Records From The Bdp93 Drill Site And Adjacent Areas Of The Selenga Delta, Lake Baikal, Siberia, Steven M. Colman, John A. Peck, Josephine Hatton, Eugene B. Karabanov, John W. King Jan 1999

Biogenic Silica Records From The Bdp93 Drill Site And Adjacent Areas Of The Selenga Delta, Lake Baikal, Siberia, Steven M. Colman, John A. Peck, Josephine Hatton, Eugene B. Karabanov, John W. King

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Biogenic silica contents of sediments on the lower Selenga Delta and Buguldeika saddle in Lake Baikal show distinct fluctuations that reflect changes in diatom productivity, and ultimately, climate. The pattern of the upper 50 m of the section, dating from about 334 ka, is similar to that of the marine oxygen isotope record, increasingly so as the younger sediments become progressively finer grained and less locally derived with time. The last two interglaciations are marked by biogenic silica abundances similar to those of the Holocene. The equivalent of marine oxygenisotope stage 3 is distinctly intermediate in character between full glacial …

The Carbon Cycle And Biogeochemical Dynamics In Lake Sediments, Walter E. Dean Jan 1999

The Carbon Cycle And Biogeochemical Dynamics In Lake Sediments, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and CaCO3 in lake sediments are often inversely related. This relation occurs in surface sediments from different locations in the same lake, surface sediments from different lakes, and with depth in Holocene sediments. Where data on accumulation rates are available, the relation holds for organic carbon and CaCO3 accumulation rates as well. An increase of several percent OC is accompanied by a decrease of several tens of percent CaCO3 indicating that the inverse relation is not due to simple dilution of one component by another. It appears from core data that …

Slip-Parallel Seismic Lineations On The Northern Hayward Fault, California, Felix Waldhauser, William L. Ellsworth, Alex Cole Jan 1999

Slip-Parallel Seismic Lineations On The Northern Hayward Fault, California, Felix Waldhauser, William L. Ellsworth, Alex Cole

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A high-resolution relative earthquake location procedure is used to image the fine-scale seismicity structure of the northern Hayward fault, California. The seismicity defines a narrow, near-vertical fault zone containing horizontal alignments of hypocenters extending along the fault zone. The lineations persist over the 15-year observation interval, implying the localization of conditions on the fault where brittle failure conditions are met. The horizontal orientation of the lineations parallels the slip direction of the fault, suggesting that they are the result of the smearing of frictionally weak material along the fault plane over thousands of years.

Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers Jan 1999

Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Richmond Mine of the Iron Mountain copper deposit contains some of the most acid mine waters ever reported. Values of pH have been measured as low as -3.6, combined metal concentrations as high as 200 g/liter, and sulfate concentrations as high as 760 g/liter. Copious quantities of soluble metal sulfate salts such as melanterite, chalcanthite, coquimbite, rhomboclase, voltaite, copiapite, and halotrichite have been identified, and some of these are forming from negative-pH mine waters. Geochemical calculations show that, under a mine-plugging remediation scenario, these salts would dissolve and the resultant 600,000-m3 mine pool would have a pH of …

Reality And Theory In A Collision, Norman Derby, Robert Fuller Jan 1999

Reality And Theory In A Collision, Norman Derby, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Billiard-ball collisions are frequently cited in introductory physics textbooks, usually as examples of elastic collisions. Many articles describing such collisions have appeared in this journal and elsewhere, but comparisons between theoretical results and actual collisions are rare, and most of the theoretical analyses have simply assumed friction to be negligible during the collision time. Students trying to simulate billiard-ball collisions on a popular simulation program such as Interactive Physics® may encounter interesting collisions, such as ones in which the cue ball is thrown up into the air when the frictional coefficients are set at even modest levels. We decided to …

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador Jan 1999

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Deslanting the Lens examines the historical and sociological implications of how Asian men have been represented in popular American film. From the early days of “yellowface” to caricatures like Long Duck Dong, Asian men have been relegated to perpetual foreigner status in American cinema. This paper will explore why the portrayal of Asian men has been limited to very specific ideas about Asian and Asian Americans are in society. This analysis will also include how socio/political events have shaped and influence popular perceptions about Asians, that inform how Asian men continue to be depicted in film.

Digital Signal Propagation In Dispersive Media., P. M. Jordan, Ashok Puri Jan 1999

Digital Signal Propagation In Dispersive Media., P. M. Jordan, Ashok Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

In this article, the propagation of digital and analog signals through media which, in general, are both dissipative and dispersive is modeled using the one-dimensional telegraph equation. Input signals are represented using impulsive, Heaviside unit step, Gaussian, rectangular pulse, and both unmodulated and modulated sinusoidal pulse type boundary data. Applications to coaxial transmission lines and freshwater signal propagation, for both digital and analog signals, are included. The analysis presented here supports the finding that digital transmission in dispersive media is generally superior to that of analog. The boundary data (input signals) give rise to solutions of the telegraph equation which …

Minor-Equivalence For Infinite Graphs, Bogdan Oporowski Jan 1999

Minor-Equivalence For Infinite Graphs, Bogdan Oporowski

Faculty Publications

Two graphs are minor-equivalent if each is isomorphic to a minor of the other. In this paper, we give structural characterizations of the minor equivalence classes of the infinite full grid GZ×L and of the infinite half-grid GZ×N. A corollary of these results states that every minor of GZ×z that has a minor isomorphic to GZ×N is minor-equivalent to one of GZ×Z or GZ×N. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Emediator: A Next Generation Electronic Commerce Server, Tuomas Sandholm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper presents eMediator, a next generation electronic commerce server that demonstrates some ways in which AI, algorithmic support, and game theoretic incentive engineering can jointly improve the efficiency of ecommerce. First, its configurable auction house includes a variety of generalized combinatorial auctions, price setting mechanism, novel bid types, mobile agents, and user support for choosing an auction type. Second, its leveled commitment contract optimizer determines the optimal contract price and decommitting penalties for a variety of leveled commitment contracting protocols, taking into account that rational agents will decommit insincerely in taking into account that rational agents will decommit insincerely …

Algorithms For Optimizing Leveled Commitment Contracts, Thomas Sandholm, Sandeep Sikka, Samphel Norden Jan 1999

Algorithms For Optimizing Leveled Commitment Contracts, Thomas Sandholm, Sandeep Sikka, Samphel Norden

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In automated negotiation systems consisting of self-interested agents, contracts have traditionally been binding. Leveled commitment contracts - i.e. contracts where each party can decommit by paying a predetermined penalty - were recently shown to improve Pareto efficiency even if agents rationally decommit in Nash equilibrium using inflated thresholds on how good their outside offers must be before they decommit. This paper operationalizes the four leveled commitment contracting protocols by presenting algorithms for using them. Algorithms are presented for computing the Nash equilibrium decomitting thresholds and decommitting probabilities given the contract price and the penalties. Existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium …

Auctions Without Common Knowledge, Sviatoslav B. Brainov, Tuomas W. Sandholm Jan 1999

Auctions Without Common Knowledge, Sviatoslav B. Brainov, Tuomas W. Sandholm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper proves that the revenue equivalence theorem ceases to hold for auctions without common knowledge about the agents' prior beliefs. That is, different auction forms yield different expected revenue. To prove this, an auction game is converted to a Bayesian decision problem with an infinite hierarchy of beliefs. A general solution for such Bayesian decision problems is proposed. The solution is a generalization of the standard Bayesian solution and coincides with it for finite belief trees and for trees representing common knowledge. It is shown how the solution generalizes the frequently used technique of backward induction for infinite belief …
