From Fuzzy Models To Fuzzy Control, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Yeung Yam

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditional (non-fuzzy) control methodology deals with situations when we know exactly how the system behaves and how it will react to different controls, and we want to choose an appropriate control strategy. This methodology enables us to transform the description of the plant's (system's) behavior into an appropriate control strategy. In many practical situations, we do not have the exact knowledge of the system's behavior, but we have expert-supplied fuzzy rules which describe this behavior. In such situations, it is desirable to transform these description rules into rules describing control. There exist several reasonable heuristics for such transformation; however, the …

Spatial parity nonconservation (PNC) has been studied in the compound-nuclear states of 134Cs by measuring the helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section. Transmission measurements on a thick 133Cs target were performed by the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center with a longitudinally polarized neutron beam in the energy range from 5 to 400 eV. A total of 28 new p-wave resonances were found, their neutron widths determined, and the PNC longitudinal asymmetries of the resonance cross sections measured. The value obtained for the root-mean-square PNC element M=(0.06-0.02+0.25) meV in 133 …

Bulletin 4357 - Fertilisers For Pastures On Sandy Soils Of The Swan Coastal Plain, K. W. Angell Mar 1999

Bulletin 4357 - Fertilisers For Pastures On Sandy Soils Of The Swan Coastal Plain, K. W. Angell

Bulletins 4000 -

When newly cleared for agriculture, the sandy soils of the Swan Coastal Plain were acutely deficient in phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and the trace elements copper ( Cu) and zinc (Zn) and sometimes molybdenum (Mo). Phosphorus deficiency was overcome by applying single superphosphate. Trace element deficiencies were overcome by adding Cu, Zn and Mo to superphosphate during manufacture, allowing P, Cu, Zn and Mo to be applied to the pasture in the one operation.

It was subsequently found that low sulphur (S) and potassium (K) were limiting production and persistence of subterranean clover-based pastures on the sandy soils of the …

Molecular Mechanics Simulations Of The Three Dimensional Cavity Problem, Donald Greenspan Mar 1999

Molecular Mechanics Simulations Of The Three Dimensional Cavity Problem, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

The rapid development of computer technology has resulted in broad interest in three dimensional fluid simulation, which is known to have more complex force interactions than occur in two dimensions (see, e.g., refs. [1-6], [9], [11-15], [17], [18] and the additional references therein). In this paper we develop and analyze some molecular mechanics simulations of the three dimensional cavity problem. The fluid considered is water at 15° C.

Megamaser Disks In Active Galactic Nuclei, John F. Kartje, Arieh Königl, Moshe Elitzur Mar 1999

Megamaser Disks In Active Galactic Nuclei, John F. Kartje, Arieh Königl, Moshe Elitzur

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Recent spectroscopic and VLBI-imaging observations of bright extragalactic H2O maser sources have revealed that the megamaser emission often originates in thin circumnuclear disks near the centers of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Using general radiative and kinematic considerations and taking account of the observed flux variability, we argue that the maser emission regions are clumpy, a conclusion that is independent of the detailed mechanism (X-ray heating, shocks, etc.) driving the collisionally pumped masers. We examine scenarios in which the clumps represent discrete gas condensations (i.e., clouds) and do not merely correspond to velocity irregularities in the disk. We show …

Data Integration By Describing Sources With Constraint Databases, Xun Cheng, Guozhu Dong, Tzekwan Lau, Jianwen Su Mar 1999

Data Integration By Describing Sources With Constraint Databases, Xun Cheng, Guozhu Dong, Tzekwan Lau, Jianwen Su

Kno.e.sis Publications

We develop a data integration approach for the efficient evaluation of queries over autonomous source databases. The approach is based on some novel applications and extensions of constraint database techniques. We assume the existence of a global database schema. The contents of each data source are described using a set of constraint tuples over the global schema; each such tuple indicates possible contributions from the source. The “source description catalog” (SDC) of a global relation consists of its associated constraint tuples. Such a method of description is advantageous since it is flexible to add new sources and to modify existing …

Efficient Mining Of Partial Periodic Patterns In Time Series Database, Jiawei Han, Guozhu Dong, Yiwen Yin Mar 1999

Efficient Mining Of Partial Periodic Patterns In Time Series Database, Jiawei Han, Guozhu Dong, Yiwen Yin

Kno.e.sis Publications

Partial periodicity search, i.e., search for partial periodic patterns in time-series databases, is an interesting data mining problem. Previous studies on periodicity search mainly consider finding full periodic patterns, where every point in time contributes (precisely or approximately) to the periodicity. However, partial periodicity is very common in practice since it is more likely that only some of the time episodes may exhibit periodic patterns.

We present several algorithms for efficient mining of partial periodic patterns, by exploring some interesting properties related to partial periodicity, such as the Apriori property and the max-subpattern hit set property, and by shared mining …

Residual Native Shallow Donor In Zno, David C. Look, Joseph W. Hemsky, J. R. Sizelove Mar 1999

Residual Native Shallow Donor In Zno, David C. Look, Joseph W. Hemsky, J. R. Sizelove

Physics Faculty Publications

High-energy electron irradiation in ZnO produces shallow donors at about EC-30meV. Because the production rate is much higher for Zn-face (0001) than O-face (0001̅ ) irradiation, the donor is identified as a Zn-sublattice defect, most likely the interstitial ZnI or a ZnI-related complex. The donor energy is quite close to that of the unirradiated sample, and of other samples discussed in the literature, strongly suggesting that ZnI (and not VO) is the dominant native shallow donor in ZnO. An exceptionally high displacement threshold energy (∼1.6MeV) is quantitatively explained in terms of a …

Tennis, Geometric Progression, Probability And Basketball, Mostafa Ghandehari

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

The following problem about a tennis match is well—known. See Halmos [1, 2]. Consider 2n tennis players playing a single elimination match. Ask the question: what are the number of games played? The answer can be obtained in two ways. First using the geometric progression 2n-1 + 2n-2 + • • • -2+1 we find that the answer is 2n — 1. We can also explain the answer as follows: for each game played there is a loser. Thus the total number of games played is equal to the number of losers. Since there is only one winner the total …

Improved Feasible Solution Algorithms For High Breakdown Estimation, Douglas M. Hawkins, David J. Olive Mar 1999

Improved Feasible Solution Algorithms For High Breakdown Estimation, Douglas M. Hawkins, David J. Olive

Articles and Preprints

High breakdown estimation allows one to get reasonable estimates of the parameters from a sample of data even if that sample is contaminated by large numbers of awkwardly placed outliers. Two particular application areas in which this is of interest are multiple linear regression, and estimation of the location vector and scatter matrix of multivariate data. Standard high breakdown criteria for the regression problem are the least median of squares (LMS) and least trimmed squares (LTS); those for the multivariate location/scatter problem are the minimum volume ellipsoid (MVE) and minimum covariance determinant (MCD). All of these present daunting computational problems. …

Analysis Of Usaf Battlelabs' Communication Infrastructure Over Various Protocols, Rocky A. Favorito, David M. Mcillece Mar 1999

Analysis Of Usaf Battlelabs' Communication Infrastructure Over Various Protocols, Rocky A. Favorito, David M. Mcillece

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of the doctrines exposed in the Air Force's "Global Engagement: A Vision for the 21st Century Air Force," the concept of a "Battlelab" was devised to support and develop the key warfighting capabilities needed in the next century. Although geographically separated, these labs must have the capability to exchange information with each other in a "Virtual Battlelab Environment" (VBE). Although many types of data will be exchanged, only variable-bit-rate (VBR) video and distributed interactive simulation (DIS) traffic are modeled in the VBE. The research described in this thesis utilizes a systems engineering approach to investigate the performance …
