Paper Session Iii-C - Partnerships For Learning: U.S. Space Camp And The University Of Central Florida, Mary Kalen Romjue Ph.D.

Space Congress® Proceedings

Collaborative partnerships between teacher education colleges and business concerns in nearby communities may help to strengthen education programs and the teachers of the next century. Practicums in real-world situations allow students to expand their knowledge in subject areas as well as knowledge of working with different types of people. In a time when public science literacy is so low, and when curriculum which involves the space program is minimized in our schools, a new approach has been established to help pre-service teachers gain a better understanding and knowledge base about the Space Progam. No longer is the college-level teacher education …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly implemented time-out room in changing the negative behavior that is exhibited by some middle school children. The time-out room is similar to the traditional in-school suspension room. The rooms differ in the duration of time that a student spends in the room and the services that the child receives while there. The student who was sent to the time-out room for behavior deemed unacceptable developed a plan to prevent any future reoccurrence of a similar offense. The student who spent time in the time-out room also received …

The students then underwent a ten lesson unit that attempted to increase their social and peer interactions and therefore their self-esteem. The students were taught through modeling, prompting, discussion, direct instruction, role-playing, and discovery. …

Growth Of Nanotubes For Probe Microscopy Tips, Jason H. Hafner, Chin Li Cheung, Charles M. Lieber Apr 1999

Growth Of Nanotubes For Probe Microscopy Tips, Jason H. Hafner, Chin Li Cheung, Charles M. Lieber

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

Carbon nanotubes, which have intrinsically small diameters and high aspect ratios and which buckle reversibly, make potentially ideal structures for use as tips in scanning probe microscopies, such as atomic force microscopy (AFM)1, 2, 3, 4. However, the present method of mechanically attaching nanotube bundles for tip fabrication is time consuming and selects against the smallest nanotubes, limiting the quality of tips. We have developed a technique for growing individual carbon nanotube probe tips directly, with control over the orientation, by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) from the ends of silicon tips. Tips grown in this way may become …
