Entropy Theory And Ras Are Friends, Robert A. Mcdougall May 1999

Entropy Theory And Ras Are Friends, Robert A. Mcdougall

GTAP Working Papers Archive

Recent research in applications of entropy theory to matrix balancing problems in economics has put powerful new tools in the hands of data base developers, but overshadowed some previous findings. We recall earlier findings that the RAS is an entropy-theoretic model. Investigating the properties of a more recently proposed entropy-theoretic model, we find that in general the RAS remains preferable. We show further that the RAS can be obtained also as a generalised cross-entropy model. Finally, we present examples illus-trating how entropy-theoretic techniques can extend the RAS to handle a wider range of problems.

On The Green Vol. 29 No. 18 May 12, 1999, Gallaudet University

1991-2000

On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.

Versatile Power Supply, Ian Cunningham May 1999

Versatile Power Supply, Ian Cunningham

Theses

Tetherless is a concept for the elimination of constraints from electrical power delivery systems. Three separate solutions are presented in a progression of increasing technology. Each stage is able to address and refine more than the previous one through foreseeable technological advancements. The main objective of the concept is to provide the user with a more flexible, adaptable, and versatile interior environment. The solutions allow control by the individual, not the system, of how and where electricity is to be used. The problems and constraints of existing systems can be broken down into three categories. First is the limitation of …

Do Ethics And Profit Mix?, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech delivered at Judson College (Elgin, IL), Pollard considers the relationship between profit-driven business initiatives and ethics, focusing particularly on how people (i.e., employees and customers) exist as the ethical foundation of any business.

The Peculiar Motions Of Early-Type Galaxies In Two Distant Rregions — Ii. The Spectroscopic Data, Gary Wegner, Matthew Colless, R. P. Saglia, Robert K. Mcmahan

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the spectroscopic data for the galaxies studied in the EFAR project, which is designed to measure the properties and peculiar motions of early-type galaxies in two distant regions. We have obtained 1319 spectra of 714 early-type galaxies over 33 observing runs on 10 different telescopes. We describe the observations and data reductions used to measure redshifts, velocity dispersions and the Mgb and Mg2 Lick linestrength indices. Detailed simulations and intercomparison of the large number of repeat observations lead to reliable error estimates for all quantities. The measurements from different observing runs are calibrated to a common …

A Testbed Architecture For Magicc Applications, Brett J. Young, Randal W. Beard May 1999

A Testbed Architecture For Magicc Applications, Brett J. Young, Randal W. Beard

Utah Space Grant Consortium

A testbed is developed for testing Multi-AGent Intelligent Coordination and Control (MAGICC). The robots act as agents which make decisions and act upon them via classical control theory. The testbed consists of sensors( camera and encoders), embedded controllers, modems and a computer network which are integrated into a hierarchical control which has decision makers, controllers, estimators and predictors. The testbed has successfully been applied to initializing the robots into geometric formation. Simulation and Hardware results are presented.

Simulating Gas Exchange In The Human Lung And Body, Noah D. Syroid, Joseph A. Orr, Dwayne R. Westenkow May 1999

Simulating Gas Exchange In The Human Lung And Body, Noah D. Syroid, Joseph A. Orr, Dwayne R. Westenkow

Utah Space Grant Consortium

We have implemented a real-time simulator of gas exchange in the human body and lung. The system realistically mimics respiratory gas uptake and production as a function of pulmonary, cardiovascular, and metabolic parameters. The implementation consists of hardware and software to control the flow of gases entering and leaving a ventilated test lung. Such a device could serve as a bench-top resource for testing newly developed anesthesia, hemo-dynamic, and patient monitors. Preliminary tests have been performed for validation of a non-invasive cardiac monitor. The results, while promising, expose the need for more sophisticated models of the human respiratory and circulatory …

Multisensor Microwave Sea-Ice Classification, Quinn P. Remund May 1999

Multisensor Microwave Sea-Ice Classification, Quinn P. Remund

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Understanding the polar ice regimes is fundamental to the understanding of global climate and other geophysical processes. Sea ice characteristics can be grouped into a number of .general sea ice classes. Multisensor data from NSCAT, ERS-2, and SSM/I is reconstructed into enhanced resolution imagery for use in ice type classification. The resulting 12-dimensional data set is linearly transformed through principal component analysis to reduce data dimensionality and noise levels. An iterative statistical data segmentation algorithm is developed using maximum a pasteriori techniques. The conditional probability distributions of observed vectors given the ice type are assumed to be Gaussian. The cluster …

Solutions To A Nonlinear Drift-Diffusion Model Of Semiconductors, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito May 1999

Solutions To A Nonlinear Drift-Diffusion Model Of Semiconductors, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A nonlinear drift-diffusion model for semiconductors is analyzed to show the existence of non-vacuum global solutions and stationary solutions. The long time behavior of the solutions is studied by establishing the existence of an absorbing set and a compact attractor of the dynamical system. Parallel results on vacuum solutions are also obtained under weaker conditions on model parameters.

An Analysis Of Pyramidal Image Fusion Techniques, T. R. Meek May 1999

An Analysis Of Pyramidal Image Fusion Techniques, T. R. Meek

Utah Space Grant Consortium

This paper discusses the application of multiresolution image fusion techniques to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Landsat imagery. Results were acquired through the development and application of image fusion software to test images. The test images were fused using six image fusion techniques that are the combinations from three types of image decomposition algorithms (ratio of low pass [RoLP] pyramids, gradient pyramids, and morphological pyramids) and two types of fusion algorithms (selection and hybrid selection and averaging). Based upon test results, this study concludes that: small details in city areas make morphological pyramids ineffective, selection forms of fusion do not …
