Mobile-Agent Planning In A Market-Oriented Environment, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus May 1999

Mobile-Agent Planning In A Market-Oriented Environment, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus

Computer Science Technical Reports

We propose a method for increasing incentives for sites to host arbitrary mobile agents in which mobile agents purchase their computing needs from host sites. We present a scalable market-based CPU allocation policy and an on-line algorithm that plans a mobile agent's expenditure over a multihop ordered itinerary. The algorithm chooses a set of sites at which to execute and computational priorities at each site to minimize execution time while preserving a prespecified budget constraint. We present simulation results of our algorithm to show that our allocation policy and planning algorithm scale well as more agents are added to the …

Instant Preheating, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde May 1999

Instant Preheating, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde

Physics: Faculty Publications

We describe a new efficient mechanism of reheating. Immediately after rolling down the rapidly moving inflaton field φ produces particles χ, which may be either bosons or fermions. This is a nonperturbative process which occurs almost instantly; no oscillations or parametric resonance is required. The effective masses of the χ particles may be very small at the moment when they are produced, but they “fatten” when the field φ increases. When the particles χ become sufficiently heavy, they rapidly decay to other, lighter particles. This leads to an almost instantaneous reheating accompanied by the production of particles with masses which …

A Hollow Fiber Membrane Bioreactor Was Investigated for Control of Air Emissions of Biodegradable Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). in the Membrane Bioreactor, Gases Containing VOCs Pass through the Lumen of Microporous Hydrophobic Hollow Fiber Membranes. Soluble Compounds Diffuse through the Membrane Pores and Partition into a VOC Degrading Biofilm. the Hollow Fiber Membranes Serve as a Support for the Microbial Population and Provide a Large Surface Area for VOC and Oxygen Mass Transfer. Experiments Were Performed to Investigate the Effects of Toluene Loading Rate, Gas Residence Time, and Liquid Phase Turbulence on Toluene Removal in a Laboratory-Scale Membrane Bioreactor. A Guide To Image Preparation For Multiple Media, Ai-Leen Chiu May 1999

A Guide To Image Preparation For Multiple Media, Ai-Leen Chiu

Theses

With the advanced technology in this information requisite world, the way of communication has been changed into using multiple media. People use different media to publish their ideas, not just on paper. The same information may be presented in different formats because of different purposes or situations. However, each of the four major media (print, Web, CD-ROM, and video) has different capabilities for displaying image information. Images optimized for one will not necessarily work well with the others. It happens all the time that people spend much time remanipulating an image which has already been made for another media. For …

Treating People With Information: An Analysis And Review Of Approaches To Communicating Health Risk Information, Alex Rothman, Marc T. Kiviniemi May 1999

Treating People With Information: An Analysis And Review Of Approaches To Communicating Health Risk Information, Alex Rothman, Marc T. Kiviniemi

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The communication of risk information is a fundamental aspect of nearly all health promotion interventions. However, no consensus exists regarding the most effective way to provide people with risk information. We will review and evaluate the relative merits of two approaches to risk communication. One approach relies on the presentation of numerical information regarding the probability of a health problem occurring, whereas the other relies on the presentation of information about the antecedents and consequences of a health problem. Because people have considerable difficulty understanding and using quantitative information, the effectiveness of interventions that rely solely on numerical probability information …

Interactive And Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Molli Noland May 1999

Interactive And Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Molli Noland

Theses

An interactive proof involves two parties, the prover and the verifier. The goal of the proof is for the prover to convince the verifier that some instance of a decision problem is true. A zero-knowledge proof is an interactive proof where the only information learned by the verifier of the proof is the outcome of the proof. This thesis contains a theoretical overview of interactive and zero-knowledge proofs and describes experiments with implementations of some of them. Two examples of interactive proofs from number theory are given, a protocol for quadratic non-residues and a protocol for subgroup non-membership. The third …

Wisconsin Reforms Welfare: The Experiences Of Recipients, Kimberly Lewis May 1999

Wisconsin Reforms Welfare: The Experiences Of Recipients, Kimberly Lewis

Theses and Graduate Projects

This mixed qualitative and quantitative exploratory study was conducted in an effort to expand the knowledge base regarding Wisconsin welfare recipients under the new welfare reform policy titled "Wisconsin Works" or ("W-2"). A mixed research design was used in order to capture the experiences of "W-2" welfare recipients from their perspectives. A purposive sampling technique was utilized in conducting interviews of 6 participants who were receiving welfare in the state of Wisconsin. The interviews focused on several areas that are assumed to lead to self-sufficiency under the "W-2" policy, including food and shelter, child care, transportation and job skills/training. Content …

Surfaces Of The Perovskite Manganites La1-XCaXMno3, Jaewu Choi, Jiandi Zhang, Sy-Hwang Liou, Peter A. Dowben, E. Ward Plummer

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Angle-resolved core-level photoemission has been utilized to study the surfaces of crystalline thin films of manganite La1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.1 and 0.35). It is found that both the surface termination and Ca surface concentration depend on the bulk Ca concentration. For La0.65Ca0.35MnO3, the terminal layer is predominately Mn-O, while for La0.9Ca0.1MnO3, the majority of the surface is La/Ca-O terminated. Both surfaces exhibit a large enhancement in the Ca concentration compared to the bulk with the La0.9Ca0.1MnO3 sample, having a larger …

Modeling The High-Speed Switching Of Far-Infrared Radiation By Photoionization In A Semiconductor, Thomas E. Wilson May 1999

Modeling The High-Speed Switching Of Far-Infrared Radiation By Photoionization In A Semiconductor, Thomas E. Wilson

Physics Faculty Research

Data from an earlier study [T. Vogel et al., Appl. Opt. 31, 329 (1992)] on the subnanosecond switching of 119-μm radiation in high-resistivity silicon by pulsed UV laser radiation, is compared with a refined one-dimensional numerical multilayer model accounting for the generation, recombination, and diffusion of the free carriers on the resulting far-infrared optical properties of the silicon. The inclusion of recent measurements for carrier-density and temperature-dependent transport parameters leads to improved agreement between experiment and theory.
