Multi-Resolution Techniques In The Rules-Based Intelligent Control Systems: A Universal Approximation Result, Yeung Yam, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Intelligent control is a very successful method of transforming expert knowledge of control rules (formulated in terms of natural language, like "small") into a precise control strategy. It has led to many spectacular applications, ranging from appliances to automatic subway control to super-precise temperature control on a Space Shuttle mission.

It is known that fuzzy control is a universal approximator, i.e., that it can approximate every possible control strategy within an arbitrary accuracy. One of the main problems of fuzzy control is that the number of rules which are necessary to represent a given control strategy with a given accuracy, …

Multiscale Image Registration Using Scale Trace Correlation, Bruce B. Hansen, Bryan S. Morse Jun 1999

Multiscale Image Registration Using Scale Trace Correlation, Bruce B. Hansen, Bryan S. Morse

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a method for registering images at different magnifications (scales) by treating the problem not only as one of scaling the image coordinates but also as one inherently involving multiresolution information. While some existing methods for multiresolution registration do consider the way the resolution (scale) affects the image, they often consider the image one scale at a time, using geometric properties within that scale. Others use multiscale information, usually to produce more robust results, but only to register same-magnification images (e.g., stereo). A scale trace is the set of values that a single pixel takes on as magnification …

The Use Of Curriculum-Based Measurement To Evaluate The Effects Of A Remedial Education Program, Michael D. Hixson Jun 1999

The Use Of Curriculum-Based Measurement To Evaluate The Effects Of A Remedial Education Program, Michael D. Hixson

Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of two Direct Instruction programs: Corrective Reading: Decoding and Connecting Math Concepts. The effectiveness of the interventions was evaluated using a single-subject experimental design with curriculumbased measurement (CBM) probes as the main means of assessment. Other methods of assessment included standardized achievement tests, school reports, and pre- and postcurriculum- based assessment probes. The CBM probes for all students were sensitive to the effects of the interventions, although there was a great deal of variability in the CBM reading probes and little correspondence across methods of assessment. The results indicate that the two Direct Instruction programs …

In Search Of Greener Pastures: The San Francisco Bay Area Environmental Technology Industry, Richard Castaldi, Murray Silverman, Sanjit Sengupta

IIMB Management Review

In the emerging US environmental technology industry, firms in the San Francisco Bay Area arguably have the best potential to attain global stature as a centre of environmental excellence. Among the unique strengths that give the Bay Area its leading edge are its well developed hightechnology base, its world class research universities and its vigilant environmental groups. The Bay Area environmental technology firms, with their strong export orientation, are in a position to capitalise on the prevailing economic climate of liberalisation in South Asia. These countries, in turn, can benefit from their expertise, particularly in solid waste management. However, the …

America's Changing Attitudes Toward Welfare And Welfare Recipients, 1938-1995, Laurie Macleod, Darrel Montero, Alan Speer Jun 1999

America's Changing Attitudes Toward Welfare And Welfare Recipients, 1938-1995, Laurie Macleod, Darrel Montero, Alan Speer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines American national public opinion on welfare, welfare recipients, and the government's role in welfare programs. The data were gathered from published public opinion polls of national samples of adults taken between 1938 and 1995. The findings indicate that public opinion has remained relatively stable over this 57-year period, with the majority of Americans believing that the government has a responsibility to help those in need. At the same time, the majority of those polled believed that the government spends too much on welfare. The findings also show that the public is in favor of reducing income differences …

An Environment For The Facilitation Of Robotic Programming, Artem Lifschitz Jun 1999

An Environment For The Facilitation Of Robotic Programming, Artem Lifschitz

Computer Science Technical Reports

I have developed, tested, and evaluated a robot programming environment organized as a library of flexible data structures to facilitate the creation of robotics programs. Abstractions are the basis of all of the achievements of Computer Science, and if it were possible to create a truly flexible, generic abstraction for the programming of robots -- the science of robotics could advance at a faster pace. For this reason, I have attempted to implement the abstraction of low-level commands, and the assembling of them into hierarchies of higher-level actions. My libraries provide mechanisms for the manipulation and queuing of actions, as …

Toward A Theory Of Reinsurance And Retrocession, Michael R. Powers, Martin Shubik Jun 1999

Toward A Theory Of Reinsurance And Retrocession, Michael R. Powers, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

There is a natural tradeoff between the benefits of increasing the number of competitors in an insurance market and the drawback to the weakening of the law of large numbers due to the diminishing of average reserves. In this investigation we consider the possibility for optimal layers of reinsurance and retrocession in the design of the insurance industry. A general question which may be asked of all financial institutions is what factors limit the number of layers of paper which can be constructed?

A Descriptive Analysis Of Factors Related To The Effectiveness Of Educational Technology Implementations In Poorer, Rural School Districts, Daniel John Vomastek Jun 1999

A Descriptive Analysis Of Factors Related To The Effectiveness Of Educational Technology Implementations In Poorer, Rural School Districts, Daniel John Vomastek

Masters Theses

As the use of educational technology in our classrooms continues to increase, schools must take every reasonable step they can to ensure the time and money invested in educational technology is not wasted. This is especially true in poorer, rural school districts that do not always have the money and personnel that larger, more affluent school districts have access to. These poorer, rural schools must take extra precautions to ensure their investment of limited resources has the greatest gain possible.

The goal of this thesis was to identify those specific factors related to the effectiveness of educational technology implementations to …

Scan-It: A Computer Vision Model Motivated By Human Physiology And Behavior, John G. Keller Jun 1999

Scan-It: A Computer Vision Model Motivated By Human Physiology And Behavior, John G. Keller

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation details the development of a new computational vision model motivated by physiological and behavioral aspects of the human visual system. Using this model, intensity features within an artificial visual field of view are extracted and transformed into a simulated cortical representation, and a saccadic guidance system scans this field of view over an object within an image to memorize that object. The object representation is thus stored as a sequence of feature matrices describing sub-regions of the object. A new image can then be searched for the object (possibly scaled and rotated), where evidence of its presence is …

Timed Safety Automata And Logic Conformance, Frank C. D. Young Jun 1999

Timed Safety Automata And Logic Conformance, Frank C. D. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Timed Logic Conformance (TLC) is used to verify the behavioral and timing properties of detailed digital circuits against abstract circuit specifications when both are modeled as Timed Safety Automata (TSA) with real-valued clocks. TLC is a bisimulation-style partial order relationship defined over TSA state space. In contrast to timed simulation, Calculus of Timed Refinement, and time-abstracted bisimulation, TLC defines when one system is an acceptable implementation of another by asymmetric action-matching requirements for specification inputs and implementation outputs. TLC intuitively and pragmatically supports writing abstract specifications and verifying them against implementations. TLC scales up by substituting verified specifications for implementations …

Methodology For Integrating The Scenario Databases Of Simulation Systems, Emilia M. Colonese Jun 1999

Methodology For Integrating The Scenario Databases Of Simulation Systems, Emilia M. Colonese

Theses and Dissertations

The use of many different simulation systems by the United States Department of Defense has resulted in many different scenario data representations contained in heterogeneous databases. These heterogeneous databases all represent the same data concept, but have different semantics due to intrinsic variations among the data models. In this research, I describe a unified scenario database to allow interoperability and reuse of the scenario data components while avoiding the problems of data redundancy. Using the object oriented approach, the data and schema of the scenario databases, represented in an object oriented model, are integrated into a global database also represented …

Effects Of Methylphenidate On The Sensitivity To Reinforcement In Children Diagnosed With Adhd: An Application Of Matching Law, Laura Kay Murray Jun 1999

Effects Of Methylphenidate On The Sensitivity To Reinforcement In Children Diagnosed With Adhd: An Application Of Matching Law, Laura Kay Murray

Masters Theses

This experiment evaluated the effects of methylphenidate on sensitivity to reinforcement of children diagnosed with ADHD using matching law.

Four children (2 males and 2 females) between the ages of 6 and 10 who were previously diagnosed with ADHD completed easy math problems to earn tokens under four different variable-interval (VI) schedules of reinforcement presented in random order. The rate of completed math problems was plotted against the mean frequency of obtained reinforcers at each schedule value in tokens per minute. The data were fit to the following single-rate hyperbolic equation (Herrnstein, 1970): R = kr/r+r0.

Results show …

Sketch-Based Image Queries In Topographic Databases, James Carswell Jun 1999

Sketch-Based Image Queries In Topographic Databases, James Carswell

Articles

In this paper we present the development of a system prototype for sketch-based queries for the content-based retrieval of digital images from topographic databases. We discuss our overall strategy and associated algorithmic and implementation aspects, and present associated database design issues. The query tools devised in this research are employing user-provided sketches of the shape and spatial configuration of the object(s) which should appear in the images to be retrieved. Our matching tool is inspired by least-squares matching (lsm), and represents an extension of lsm to function with a variety of raster representations. Our strategy makes use of a hierarchical …

Revision Of The Rainfall Intensity Duration Curves For The Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Bernadette S. Dupont, David L. Allen Jun 1999

Revision Of The Rainfall Intensity Duration Curves For The Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Bernadette S. Dupont, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this study was to revise and update the existing Rainfall Intensity- Duration-Frequency (IDF) Curves for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The nine curves that currently govern Kentucky are based on data from First-Order Weather Stations in and around Kentucky. However, the new curves only utilize data from within the State. The data was gathered from both First Order and Co-operative Weather Stations. In accordance with Bulletin 71, the new curves reflect the climatological zones located within the state, thus producing only four IDF curves.
