This note presents a classification of commutative, cancellative monoids S by flatness properties of their associated S-acts.

On Congruence Compact Monoids, Sydney Bulman-Fleming Jun 1999

On Congruence Compact Monoids, Sydney Bulman-Fleming

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A universal algebra is called congruence compact if every family of congruence classes with the finite intersection property has a non-empty intersection. This paper determines the structure of all right congruence compact monoids S for which Green’s relations J and H coincide. The results are thus sufficiently general to describe, in particular, all congruence compact commutative monoids and all right congruence compact Clifford inverse monoids.

Possible Explanations Of Phase Transitions In Highway Traffic, C.F. Daganzo, M.J. Cassidy, Robert L. Bertini Jun 1999

Possible Explanations Of Phase Transitions In Highway Traffic, C.F. Daganzo, M.J. Cassidy, Robert L. Bertini

Civil and Environmental Engineering

It is shown that all the phase transitions in and out of freely flowing traffic reported earlier for a German site could be caused by bottlenecks, as are all the transitions observed at two other sites examined here. The evidence suggests that bottlenecks cause these transitions in a predictable way, and does not suggest that stoppages (jams) appear spontaneously in free flow traffic for no apparent reason. It is also shown that many of the complicated instability phenomena observed at all locations can be explained qualitatively in terms of a simple Markovian theory specific to traffic that does not necessarily …

Considerations For An Effective Telecommunications-Use Policy, Michael E. Whitman, Anthony M. Townsend, Robert J. Aalberts Jun 1999

Considerations For An Effective Telecommunications-Use Policy, Michael E. Whitman, Anthony M. Townsend, Robert J. Aalberts

Faculty Articles

Recent changes in federal telecommunications legislation have underscored the importance of an up-to-date and effective telecommunications-use policy in business organizations. With the proliferation of the Internet, intranets, and email as commonplace business tools, the potential for misuse and subsequent liability has become an increasing concern. Even though the recent Supreme Court decision struck down the obscenity provisions of the Communications Decency Act (CDA), it left intact legislation that effectively mandates development of a sound telecommunications-use policy. In addition to potential liability for systems misuse, organizations have also had to address issues of individual employee privacy within the new systems.

Characterizing Erythrocyte Motions In Flowing Blood, Markos Leggas Jun 1999

Characterizing Erythrocyte Motions In Flowing Blood, Markos Leggas

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Characterizing the probabilistic motions of cells is a prerequisite for the development of a general model of transport and surface deposition of white cells and platelets (WBC/P). These phenomena differ greatly when red blood cells (RBC) are present at normal levels, but follow convective diffusion in dilute suspensions. A critical need is to understand and characterize dispersion and diffusion as they apply to red cells in suspension flow. The dispersive motions of
0.5-micrometer beads and fluorescently labeled human RBC flowing in dilute (0.003%) and concentrated (25%) RBC suspensions, respectively, were characterized using fluorescence videomicroscopy methods, and times for individual tracer …

Operational Flexibility And Market Valuation Of Earnings, Charles Y. Tang, Surinder Tikoo Jun 1999

Operational Flexibility And Market Valuation Of Earnings, Charles Y. Tang, Surinder Tikoo

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

This paper examines the association between the stock returns and accounting earnings of firms that have different levels of operational flexibility. Operational flexibility is a firm's ability to respond profitably to environmental fluctuations by shifting factors of production within a multinational network of subsidiaries. The geographic breadth and depth of a firm's multinational network are used as indicators of operational flexibility. We find there is a significantly greater coefficient between stock returns and accounting earnings for multinational firms that operate in many countries, but limit their concentration in any one foreign country, than for other multinational firms or domestic firms. …

Photochemistry And Pinhole Photography: An Interdisciplinary Experiment, Angeliki A. Rigos, Kevin Salemme Jun 1999

Photochemistry And Pinhole Photography: An Interdisciplinary Experiment, Angeliki A. Rigos, Kevin Salemme

Visual & Performing Arts Faculty Publications

This interdisciplinary activity combines chemistry and art through the construction and use of a pinhole camera. We focused on the chemistry of the black and white photographic process as the science component of this activity. The reactions involved are good examples of photochemistry and multiphase chemical reactions, since the light sensitive materials (silver halides) are in the form of a gelatin emulsion of microscopic crystals.

Fast Out-Of-Core Sorting On Parallel Disk Systems, Matthew D. Pearson Jun 1999

Fast Out-Of-Core Sorting On Parallel Disk Systems, Matthew D. Pearson

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This paper discusses our implementation of Rajasekaran's (l,m)-mergesort algorithm (LMM) for sorting on parallel disks. LMM is asymptotically optimal for large problems and has the additional advantage of a low constant in its I/O complexity. Our implementation is written in C using the ViC* I/O API for parallel disk systems. We compare the performance of LMM to that of the C library function qsort on a DEC Alpha server. qsort makes a good benchmark because it is fast and performs comparatively well under demand paging. Since qsort fails when the swap disk fills up, we can only compare these algorithms …

Resources And Teaching Strategies To Support Aboriginal Children's Numeracy Learning : A Review Of The Literature, Tracey Frigo

Indigenous Education Research

This literature review focuses on teaching and learning strategies that support the development of numeracy skills in Aboriginal children. Its purpose is to provide a theoretical framework that will inform the development of numeracy materials to support teachers of Aboriginal children in New South Wales primary schools. The key themes which inform a framework for the development of numeracy resources for Aboriginal children are identified as: teaching Aboriginal students; cultural frameworks; engaging in the language of mathematics; and contextualising mathematics.

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Gray wolf populations (Canis lupus) were extirpated from the western U.S. by the 1930s. Subsequently, wolves from Canada occasionally dispersed south into Montana and Idaho but failed to survive long enough to reproduce. Public attitudes toward predators changed and wolves received legal protection with the passage of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1973. Wolves began to successfully recolonize northwestern Montana in the early 1980s. By 1995, 6 packs lived entirely in northwestern Montana. In 1995 and 1996, 66 wolves from southwestern Canada were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) (31 wolves) and central Idaho (35 wolves). The …

Spume Drops Produced By The Wind Tearing Of Wave Crests, Richard P. Barber Jr., Magdalena Anguelova, Jin Wu Jun 1999

Spume Drops Produced By The Wind Tearing Of Wave Crests, Richard P. Barber Jr., Magdalena Anguelova, Jin Wu

Physics

The wind tearing of breaking wave crests produces spume drops. The authors report preliminary laboratory data from direct and unambiguous observation of this process under various wind conditions using a video imaging technique. Results include the size distribution and production rates of these drops. The curves for production rates at different wind speeds merge effectively when normalized by the number of breaking events. This confirms that wave breaking occurrence, not the wind speed, is a dominant factor in spume production.
