Recent IMSA graduate Keith Winstein of Oak Park spent part of his summer doing something quite unconventional for an 18-year-old.

Winstein was the only student in a group of 11 official United States delegates to attend the first World Conference on Science (WCS) in Budapest, Hungary, from June 26 to July 1. The conference brought together 2,500 scientists from 150 countries.

Is Mathematics Education Taking A Step Backward?, Frances Kuwahara Lang

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

This article addresses the current political, socioeconomic, and educational state of mathematics education in California. The “back-to-basics” movement in mathematics mirrors the “back-to-phonics” movement in language arts. At a time when ethnic minorities have become the majority, the dominant culture has chosen to revert back to practices that are inequitable and empower the elite. Critical educators must carry on the dialogue necessary to empower the disenfranchised mathematically and undermine the social injustice and economic inequality that will result if this movement is embraced.

Techniques For Automated High‐Precision Photometry Of Sun‐Like Stars, Gregory W. Henry Jul 1999

Techniques For Automated High‐Precision Photometry Of Sun‐Like Stars, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Tennessee State University operates several Automatic Photoelectric Telescopes (APTs) located at Fairborn Observatory in the Patagonia Mountains of southern Arizona. The APTs are dedicated to photometric monitoring programs that would be difficult and expensive to accomplish without the advantages provided by automation. I describe the operation of two of the telescopes (0.75 and 0.80 m APTs) and the quality‐control techniques that result in their routine acquisition of single‐star differential photometry with a precision of 0.001 mag for single observations and 0.0001–0.0002 mag for seasonal means. I show that a primary obstacle to photometry at this level of precision is intrinsic …

A Study Of Omega Bands And Ps6 Pulsations On The Ground, At Low Altitude And At Geostationary Orbit, A. M. Jorgensen, Harlan E. Spence, T. J. Hughes, D. Mcdiarmid

Physics & Astronomy

We investigate the electrodynamic coupling between auroral omega bands and the inner magnetosphere. The goal of this study is to determine the features to which omega bands map in the magnetosphere. To establish the auroral-magnetosphere connection, we appeal to the case study analysis of the data rich event of September 26, 1989. At 6 magnetic local time (MLT), two trains of Ps6 pulsations (ground magnetic signatures of omega bands) were observed to drift over the Canadian Auroral Network For the OPEN Program Unified Study (CANOPUS) chain. At the same time periodic ionospheric flow patterns moved through the collocated Bistatic Auroral …

Ground flashes with positive polarity associated with both sprites and elves excite the Earth's Schumann resonances to amplitudes several times greater than the background resonances. Theoretical predictions for dielectric breakdown in the mesosphere are tested using ELF methods to evaluate vertical charge moments of positive ground flashes. Comparisons of the measured time constants for lightning charge transfer with the electrostatic relaxation time at altitudes of nighttime sprite initiation (50–70 km) generally validate the electrostatic assumption in predictions made initially by Wilson [1925]. The measured charge moments (Q dS = 200–2000 C-km) are large in comparison with ordinary negative lightning but …

Water Supply Planning Under Interdependence Of Actions: Theory And Application, D. Marc Kilgour, Keith W. Hipel, Siamak Rajabi Jul 1999

Water Supply Planning Under Interdependence Of Actions: Theory And Application, D. Marc Kilgour, Keith W. Hipel, Siamak Rajabi

Mathematics Faculty Publications

An ongoing water supply planning problem in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, is studied to select the best water supply combination, within a multiple-objective framework, when actions are interdependent. The interdependencies in the problem are described and shown to be essential features. The problem is formulated as a multiple-criteria integer program with interdependent actions. Because of the large number of potential actions and the nonconvexity of the decision space, it is quite difficult to find nondominated subsets of actions. Instead, a modified goal programming technique is suggested to identify promising subsets. The appropriateness of this technique is explained, …
