Optimal Design Of Aquifer Clean Up Systems Under Uncertainty Using A Neural Network And A Genetic Algorithm, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta Aug 1999

Optimal Design Of Aquifer Clean Up Systems Under Uncertainty Using A Neural Network And A Genetic Algorithm, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a methodology to account for the stochastic nature of hydraulic conductivity during the design of pump-and-treat systems for aquifer cleanup. The methodology (1) uses a genetic algorithm to find the global optimal solution and (2) incorporates a neural network to model the response surface within the genetic algorithm. We apply the methodology for a real example and different optimization scenarios. The employed optimization formulation requires few hydraulic conductivity realizations. The presented approach produces a trade-off curve between reliability and treatment facility size .

Many bird species native to the tallgrnss prairie region oCthc central U.S. have declined drastically since European settlement due lo the destruction and alteration of grassland habitat. In this study, the breeding bird communities or 21 large reclaimed surface coal mine grasslands in a seven-county area or southwestern Indiana were examined with respect to species and guild composition, density, variation among sites, and grassland size. In addition, the vegetation characteristics of nine large mine grasslands were described and related to the presence and abundance or eight grasslund bird species common to the study areas. The immense size of mine grasslands …

Unconstrained Instantaneous Center Integration (Ici) Algorithms, Nathan Eggleton Aug 1999

Unconstrained Instantaneous Center Integration (Ici) Algorithms, Nathan Eggleton

Theses

This paper presents several unique "instantaneous center integration" (ICI) algorithms for use in studying unconstrained vehicle motion using computer simulations and animations. Specifically, these algorithms are most appropriate for the case when high angular rates are present, such as would occur during tight cornering and/or possibly during an accident. The three ICI algorithms presented are the "pseudo-exact", first order approximation and the second order approximation. These ICI algorithms are capable of producing valid, accurate, and efficient simulation results, which describe the behavior of a vehicle under these conditions. The "pseudo-exact" is the most accurate, yet the most computationally expensive. The …

Smart Decisions, Beatriz Gomez Aug 1999

Smart Decisions, Beatriz Gomez

Theses

It is very often that parents and educators find themselves running out of words when it comes to explaining a sensitive topic to a child. Such topics include but are not limited to sex, abortion, adoption, pregnancy, divorce, drugs, and disease. A computer based game has been designed to help parents and educators address such sensitive topics. This software package consists of a series of two dimensional animations. All of the animations belong to the same story, which as it progress, gives the player the opportunity to make diverse decisions. Each decision leads the player through a different path, hence …

Cluster-Based Database Selection Techniques For Routing Bibliographic Queries, Jian Xu, Ee Peng Lim, Wee-Keong Ng Aug 1999

Cluster-Based Database Selection Techniques For Routing Bibliographic Queries, Jian Xu, Ee Peng Lim, Wee-Keong Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we focus on the database selection problem in the context of a global digital library consisting of a large number of online bibliographic servers. Each server hosts a bibliographic database that contains bibliographic records each of which consists of text values for a number of pre-defined bibliographic attributes such as title, author, call number, subject, etc.. Each bibliographic database supports user queries on the bibliographic attributes. Since bibliographic records are relatively small in size, we only consider bibliographic databases that support boolean queries on the bibliographic attributes, and the query results are not ranked. While focusing on …

The Design And Construction Of An Out-Of-Plane Sensitive Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer For Non-Destructive Testing Applications, Alexander Burden Aug 1999

The Design And Construction Of An Out-Of-Plane Sensitive Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer For Non-Destructive Testing Applications, Alexander Burden

Masters

There are many non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques use din industry, which employ acoustic emission, ultrasound, X-rays and thermography. Optical interferometric methodology is being increasingly used in industry. Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) is one of the principal optical interferometric techniques used in NDT to measure deformations. Optical surface metrology offers many advantages over conventional methods. These include greater sensitivity, improved lateral and vertical resolution, non-contact and full field measurement. Conventional methods of NDT however continue to be chosen over ESPI. The objective of this thesis is focused on making ESPI more feasible as a NDT technique for use in industry. …

Slot And Aperture Coupling For Airflow Aperture Arrays In Shielding Enclosure Designs, Min Li, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Richard E. Dubroff, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The coupling between apertures or slots in airflow arrays is investigated numerically by means of the method of moments (MoM). Application to shielding enclosure design is of particular interest. Justification for a previously extracted simple empirical design approach for the relation between the number N and size a of apertures, and the shielding effectiveness ∼Na3 for an airflow aperture array is given. The coupling between slots is also investigated. The application limit of the empirical design approach is demonstrated.

The Discovery-Oriented Approach To Organic Chemistry. 2. Selectivity In Alcohol Oxidation. An Exercise In 1H Nmr Spectroscopy For Sophomore Organic Laboratories, Ram Mohan, Steven Shadwick

Scholarship

We have developed a simple oxidation experiment that presents the student with a puzzle and is a good exercise in 1H NMR spectroscopy. The experiment, which illustrates the important concept of selectivity in organic synthesis, involves selective oxidation of a mixture of 1-heptanol and 2-heptanol using commercial swimming pool chlorine. 1H NMR analysis of the product mixture allows the student to determine the selectivity exhibited by the reagent.

Hydrogen Dynamics In The Hydrides Of Pr₂Fe₁₇ As Revealed By Mössbauer Spectroscopy, Dimitri Hautot, Gary J. Long, Fernande Grandjean, Olivier Isnard, Salvatore Miraglia

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The rhombohedral Pr2Fe17Hx compounds with the Th2Zn17 structure have been prepared for x =0-5. Their lattice parameters and Curie temperatures have been determined from powder x-ray diffraction and thermomagnetic measurements, respectively, and their Mössbauer spectra have been measured between 4.2 and 295 K. The Mössbauer spectra for x=0, 1, and 2, obtained between 4.2 and 295 K, and those of Pr2Fe17H3, obtained above 90 K, have been analyzed with a seven sextet model, indicative of a basal magnetization in these compounds. The Mössbauer spectra of Pr …

Rf Isolation Using Power Islands In Dc Power Bus Design, Jun Fan, Yong Ren, Juan Chen, David M. Hockanson, Hao Shi, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power island structures are often employed for minimizing the propagation of high-frequency noise on DC power buses. The rationale is based on introducing a series impedance in the power plane to provide isolation of a noise source from the rest of the PCB design. The power island concept is investigated herein experimentally, to determine its noise mitigation attributes and limitations. A modeling approach that is suitable for arbitrary PCB island geometries including lumped SMT decoupling capacitors is also presented. The modeling and measurements indicate that island structures can achieve some degree of isolation under certain conditions.

Change has become an ongoing phenomenon and business process re-engineering has become a necessity for survival of organizations as we approach the 21st century. As participants in this ever-changing working environment, we must be innovative in managing change as it affects both our professional and personal lives. One of the innovative ways to manage change in the implementation of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is to adopt a comprehensive change management methodology. In this research, we propose the use of the recurring improvisational change methodology for managing such change. This research is also aimed at implementing the improvisational change …

Signiture Analysis Of Fetal Blood Velocity Waveforms, Ronald Soule Aug 1999

Signiture Analysis Of Fetal Blood Velocity Waveforms, Ronald Soule

Theses

Doppler blood velocity waveform analysis is conducted to affect clinical diagnosis. Current analysis codes developed at RIT posses the capability to assess gross hemodynamic parameters such as heart rate, mean pulse velocity, peak systolic velocity and also the beat to beat variability of these parameters. These computer algorithms have, however, lacked the ability to determine hemodynamic indices such as the pulsatility and resistance index as well as the AB ratio. This latter deficiency stems from an algorithmic need to accurately determine end diastolic velocity in every cardiac cycle. The current thesis specifically augments current algorithms to accurately compute end diastolic …

Optical Properties Of Β″-(Et)2sf5ch2cf2so3: A Layered Molecular Superconductor With Large Discrete Counterions, J. Dong, J. L. Musfeldt, J. A. Schlueter, Jack M. Williams, P. G. Nixon, Rolf Walter Winter, Gary L. Gard

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report the polarized infrared and optical reflectance of β″-(ET)₂SF₅CH₂CF₂SO₃ as a function of temperature. This fully organic superconductor displays weakly metallic behavior over the entire temperature range of our investigation. The electronic properties present several unusual features including the lack of a conventional free carrier (Drude) response at low temperature, infrared localization phenomena, and an unexpected temperature dependence of the oscillator strength. Similar behavior is observed in other β and β″ superconductors above Tc, suggesting that this class of compounds is very close to a metal→insulator transition where electronic correlations are important and the Drude response carries very little …

Simple Model For Linear And Nonlinear Mixing At Unstable Fluid Interfaces In Spherical Geometry, John D. Ramshaw Aug 1999

Simple Model For Linear And Nonlinear Mixing At Unstable Fluid Interfaces In Spherical Geometry, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model was recently described for predicting linear and nonlinear mixing at an unstable planar fluid interface subjected to an arbitrary time-dependent variable acceleration history [J. D. Ramshaw, Phys. Rev. E 58, 5834 (1998)]. Here we present an analogous model for describing the mixing of two adjacent spherical fluid shells of different density resulting from an arbitrary time-dependent mean interface radius R(t). As in the planar case, the model is based on a heuristic expression for the kinetic energy of the system. This expression is based on that for the kinetic energy of a linearly perturbed interface, but with …

Mobile Agents And The Future Of The Internet, David Kotz, Robert S. Gray Aug 1999

Mobile Agents And The Future Of The Internet, David Kotz, Robert S. Gray

Dartmouth Scholarship

Use of the Internet has exploded in recent years with the appearance of the World-Wide Web. In this paper, we show how current technological trends may lead to a system based substantially on mobile code, and in many cases, mobile agents. We discuss several technical and non-technical hurdles along the path to that eventuality. It seems likely that, within a few years, nearly all major Internet sites will be capable of hosting and willing to host some form of mobile code or mobile agents.

Optimization Of A Brushless Permanent Magnet Linear Alternator For Use With A Linear Internal Combustion Engine, William Robert Cawthorne Aug 1999

Optimization Of A Brushless Permanent Magnet Linear Alternator For Use With A Linear Internal Combustion Engine, William Robert Cawthorne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerous applications require the generation of electric power without connection to the utility power system. Many industrial, commercial, and personal applications require uninterrupted electrical power in the event of a utility failure. Additionally, the nature of military field operations necessitates the ability to generate electricity in areas where connection to the utility is impractical or impossible. Generation units selected for these applications must be reliable, efficient, compact, and lightweight.;Presently, rotary internal combustion engines coupled with rotary alternators are the primary generation unit used in these applications. This research contends that a tubular brushless permanent magnet linear alternator with a linear …

Variational Results And Solutions In Gauge Gravity And A Bifurcation Analysis Of Black Hole Orbital Dynamics, Bruce Herold Dean Aug 1999

Variational Results And Solutions In Gauge Gravity And A Bifurcation Analysis Of Black Hole Orbital Dynamics, Bruce Herold Dean

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An analysis of all known spherically symmetric solutions to the field equations originating from the Riemann tensor quadratic curvature Lagrangian is presented. A new exact solution is found for the field equation originating from the "energy-momentum" equation of the gauge gravity theory. Imposing equivalence between the Palatini and standard variational field equations yields an algebraic condition that restricts the number spacetime solutions to gauge gravity. A class of spherically symmetric solutions to the conformally invariant theory of gravitation is shown to be shared by the gauge gravity field equations. An analysis of a spherically symmetric solution to the conformal gravity …

Determination Of Optimal Pricing And Warranty Policies, Ozcan Mutlu Aug 1999

Determination Of Optimal Pricing And Warranty Policies, Ozcan Mutlu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An important problem facing manufacturers in today's competitive market is the determination of the selling price of a product and its warranty period. A longer warranty may serve as a signal of product reliability; however, it may also lead to an increase in cost and hence reduce the profit if the product reliability is low. A burn-in test may be used to improve the reliability of products prior to their shipment.;This research presented integrated models for maximizing the expected profit for products that are subjected to a burn-in test and sold with warranty. The burn-in time, warranty period, and price …

Broadcasting In Grid Graphs, Iwona Wojciechowska

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This work consists of two separate parts. The first part deals with the problem of multiple message broadcasting, and the topic of the second part is line broadcasting. Broadcasting is a process in which one vertex in a graph knows one or more messages. The goal is to inform all remaining vertices as fast as possible. In this work we consider a special kind of graphs, grids.;In 1980 A. M. Farley showed that the minimum time required to broadcast a set of M messages in any connected graph with diameter d is d + 2(M - 1). This work presents …

Trip Generation Rates For Consolidated Schools In West Virginia, Amy Marie Balmer Aug 1999

Trip Generation Rates For Consolidated Schools In West Virginia, Amy Marie Balmer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently, there are no trip generation rates for consolidated schools in West Virginia. A consolidated school is a public school that formed from the consolidation of other schools of the same type or a county-wide school. Because West Virginia is rural in nature and declining school-age population, the trip rates for consolidated schools would tend to be different than the national averages for traditional schools.;This research developed trip rates specific to consolidated high, middle, and elementary schools in West Virginia. In total, sixteen different schools in West Virginia were studied. Of the sixteen sites studied, seven were high schools, two …

Forecasting Of Work In Process Quality Using Holt-Winters Method For Missing Observations, Sarang Ram Kayande

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since the pace of technological change is so great, and since new products and processes may be key to a company's future plans, an increasing number of companies are emphasizing regular and complete technological forecasts affecting their industry. Those companies which have gone far in developing planning premises from their technological forecasts have tended to be high-technology enterprises. What has been done in these instances is to encourage members of their technical staffs to be alert to future developments; to think in terms of the impact of current scientific developments on the future state of technology; and to develop orderly …

Various Pushing Methods On Grid Graphs, Jiaxin Wang Aug 1999

Various Pushing Methods On Grid Graphs, Jiaxin Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis describes algorithms for determining if a grid of switches can be turned into all-off state from any initial configuration by various methods of activation operation (push). Among these push methods, besides the regular "+" push, "+" push with no center, "X" push, "X" push with no center, and a "V"-typed unbalanced push are studied. The research methods used in this work are mainly linear algebra and algorithm analysis. Results obtained include that the grid m x n is completely solvable with push "+" no center, if and only if co-prime (m+1, n+1).

Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Aliphatic Alcohols. Characterization Of The Hydrophobic Substrate Recognition Site, Leila Ustynyuk, Brian Bennett, Tanya Edwards, Richard C. Holz Aug 1999

Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Seven aliphatic and two aromatic alcohols were tested as reporters of the substrate selectivity of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). This series of alcohols was chosen to systematically probe the effect of carbon chain length, steric bulk, and inhibitor shape on the inhibition of AAP. Initially, however, the question of whether AAP is denatured in the presence of aliphatic alcohols was addressed. On the basis of circular dichroism (CD), electronic absorption, and fluorescence spectra, the secondary structure of AAP, with and without added aliphatic alcohols, was unchanged. These data clearly indicate that AAP is not denatured in aliphatic alcohols, …

Weighing And Measuring In The Worlds Of The Book Of Mormon, John W. Welch Jul 1999

Weighing And Measuring In The Worlds Of The Book Of Mormon, John W. Welch

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This article addresses the seemingly misplaced discussion of weights and measures in the middle of Alma 11 in the Book of Mormon. Although the interruption initially seems strange, John Welch offers new insights to explain its purpose in the Book of Mormon. For instance, knowledge of the Nephite monetary system supplements a reader’s comprehension of the bribery and corruption that occurred in that society. Evidence of this monetary system also shows a link between Near Eastern civilizations and Book of Mormon civilizations, thus providing further evidence for the divinity of Joseph Smith’s work.

Pondering The Word, Dennis Packard, Sandra Packard Jul 1999

Pondering The Word, Dennis Packard, Sandra Packard

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Despite the emphasis that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints places on scriptures, particularly the Book of Mormon, some members find it difficult to truly love the scriptures. This article claims that by pondering the scriptures often, members can better understand and appreciate the prophetic words. In order to find a deeper love for the scriptures, readers should consider the following details while reading: the setting of a passage; the meaning of various words and phrases; the author’s attitude when he wrote the passage; the possible comparisons between passages; the possible implied messages of the authors; the possible …
