Elastic Wave Propagation And Scattering In Heterogeneous, Anisotropic Media: Textured Polycrystalline Materials, Joseph A. Turner Aug 1999

Elastic Wave Propagation And Scattering In Heterogeneous, Anisotropic Media: Textured Polycrystalline Materials, Joseph A. Turner

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The propagation of elastic waves through heterogeneous, anisotropic media is considered. Appropriate ensemble averaging of the elastic wave equation leads to the Dyson equation which governs the mean response of the field. The Dyson equation is given here in terms of anisotropic elastic Green’s dyadics for the medium with and without heterogeneities. The solution of the Dyson equation for the mean response is given for heterogeneities that are weak. The formalism is further specified for the case of equiaxed cubic polycrystalline metals with a single aligned axis. The Green’s dyadics in this case are those for a transversely isotropic medium. …

Communication Characteristics Of Children With Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Laura Jean Ball Aug 1999

Communication Characteristics Of Children With Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Laura Jean Ball

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Speech-language pathology researchers have pursued a strategy to identify children with distinct DAS characteristics in an effort to study the characteristics, possible cause(s), and interventions for this disorder. Increasingly, reports indicate that children with suspected DAS experience a range of speech, language, social interaction, behavioral, and academic disabilities. Investigators in DAS continue to recommend intervention strategies that focus primarily on motor speech impairments, although it is clear that few children with a distinct version of DAS exist.

Evaluations of communication skills were obtained from 36 children identified with suspected DAS for this research project. Hierarchical cluster analysis was completed on …

Quantitative, Non-Destructive Calibration Of Scanned Probe Microscope Cantilevers, John Hazel Aug 1999

Quantitative, Non-Destructive Calibration Of Scanned Probe Microscope Cantilevers, John Hazel

Masters Theses

Principles of surface science and engineering are applied to determine scanned probe microscope cantilever spring constants. The bi-component gold-ceramic cantilever composition is modeled analytically. Finite element analysis is applied to simulate deflection behavior of the probe tip. Data from experimental determination of resonant frequency are employed to infer material characteristics. Combination of the results from these three procedures is employed to infer material characteristics. Combination of the results from these three procedures is used to produce a spring constant assessment within 10% of actual values. An additional convenient program for assessment of scanning probe microscopy cantilever spring constants is developed …

Artificial Intelligence Approach To Analyzing The Bullwhip Effect In Supply Chains, C. Qing, Keng Siau Aug 1999

Artificial Intelligence Approach To Analyzing The Bullwhip Effect In Supply Chains, C. Qing, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Supply chain management critically affects businesses’ abilities to obtain and sustain competitive advantages. The bullwhip effect, however, presents a challenge for successful supply chain management by amplifying demands in the supply chains. This paper presents a systematic approach to tackle the issue of bullwhip effect. Firstly, we define the supply chain under a multiagent framework. Secondly, the group problem solving paradigm, which is a rule learning approach, is proposed to enhance the decision making process within the supply chain framework. The group problem solving paradigm is also suggested as a means to alleviate the bullwhip effect. The paper concludes with …

Twist Modulated Phases In Chiral Smectic Liquid Crystals, Jonathan J. Stott, Rolfe G. Petschek Aug 1999

Twist Modulated Phases In Chiral Smectic Liquid Crystals, Jonathan J. Stott, Rolfe G. Petschek

Faculty Scholarship

By considering short period helical planar modulations about the layer normal, we construct a model free energy for the ferriclinic phases observed in chiral smectic liquid crystals. We then use this free energy to construct the phase diagram for our model. The resulting phases are compared with the experimentally observed smectic-C* subphases (ferroclinic, antiferroclinic, and heliclinic). A strong coupling is found between the ferroclinic q=2Ï€/a and the heliclinic q=2Ï€/3a modes. This coupling was not considered in previous models. The resulting additional stability of this "locked in" phase is discussed.

Evaluation Of Raman Spectroscopy And Ruby Piezospectroscopy As Tools For Investigating The Corrosion Of Metallic Alloys, Daniel P. Renusch Aug 1999

Evaluation Of Raman Spectroscopy And Ruby Piezospectroscopy As Tools For Investigating The Corrosion Of Metallic Alloys, Daniel P. Renusch

Dissertations

Stainless steel system components that operate in high temperature oxidizing environments obtain protection from corrosion by means of thermally grown chromia and alumina scales. Ongoing investigations of protective scales utilize a battery of experimental and theoretical techniques. A technique which has received little attention is Raman scattering. The reason for its limited use has been long data acquisition times required to obtain suitable spectra from thin surface oxides. Because advances in detection systems, namely the multichannel CCD (charge coupled devices), have recently provided dramatic improvement in the sensitivity of Raman scattering experiments, we decided to reevaluate the technique as a …

Developmental Changes In Verbal And Imaginal Mnemonic Techniques For Serial Recall, Michelle L. Rupiper

Student Work

Children’s ability to use mnemonic techniques was investigated in first, fourth and sixth graders. Children in each age group were assigned to one of three conditions: method of loci, story mnemonic or elaborative control group. Subjects were given three recall tests. Each test was scored with and without regard to the order in which subjects recalled the words presented. Relative to the control group, both mnemonic conditions showed an advantage in memorizing lists of 20 words. However, all conditions, including the elaborative control group showed significant increases in the number of words recalled between the baseline test and recall Test …

GTAP Working Papers Archive

This paper discusses future directions in global trade analysis from the perspective of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) network.

The first section offers a projection of where the GTAP network might be in the year 2010. This is followed by an analysis of the basic drivers of change in global trade analysis. These include: network externalities and the push for greater openness in both modeling and database work. The second half of the paper revisits John Whalley's "Hidden Challenges" for applied general equilibrium analysis, discussing how well we have fared with respect to these challenges, first posed in 1986. …

Data Mining And Probabilistic Network-Based Mechanism For Data Warehousing, Mei-Ling Shyu, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A good multirmedia database managerment systerm (MDBMS) should be able to store, retrieve, and manage rich semantic data in multimedia database syst, ems. Due to the complexity of real-world applications, the number of databases and the volumes of data in databases have increased tremendously. With the explosive growth in the amount and complexity of data, how to effectively manage the network of databases and utilize the large amount of data becomes important. For this purpose, a probabilistic network-based mechanism for constructing a federation of data warehouses and speeding up information retrieval to facilitate the functionality of an MDBMS is proposed. Our …

Modeling Macrophytes Of The Columbia Slough, Oregon, Chris Berger, Scott A. Wells Aug 1999

Modeling Macrophytes Of The Columbia Slough, Oregon, Chris Berger, Scott A. Wells

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Columbia Slough is a tidally influenced freshwater system of wetlands, channels, and lakes located within the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. It is a eutrophic water body susceptible to algae blooms and crashes and periods of high pH which violate water quality standards. High nutrient loads from groundwater principally controls algae productivity. Past structural changes to the Columbia Slough have included filling of wetlands and lakes and the construction of levees, dikes, culverts and irrigation channels. These changes have altered the natural flow dynamics creating an environment more conducive to eutrophication. …

Knowledge Sharing With Customers On The Www: Approaches By National Tourism Organizations, Xinran You, Joseph O'Leary, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The importance of knowledge management has been emphasized increasingly in recent literature. Knowledge has been regarded as the most important corporate asset in an organization (Nonaka and Takeuchi, 1995). But what is knowledge? According to Harris (1996), "when information is combined with context and experience, it becomes knowledge". Hence, knowledge is the integration of information, context, and experience (Ponelis and Fairer-Wessels, 1998). In the tourism context of this paper, there are two components of knowledge: (1) customer knowledge--understanding of customers by marketers that leads to more effective marketing actions; and (2) destination knowledge that either the travelers or travel experts …

Website Design: The Concepts Of Informational And Computational Equivalence, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

“To the end users, the user interface is the system.” This slogan has been widely used in human-computer interaction field to stress the importance of user interface design. In the Internet and electronic commerce area, the website is not only the system, but it also projects an image of the organization in cyberspace. The design of websites is central to businesses as they create the first impression of organizations to visitors. For a virtual organization, the website is also the only medium that visitors rely on to form their impression of the organization. In this paper, we look at theories …

Development And Testing Of Improved Spectral Unmixing Techniques, Daisei Konno Aug 1999

Development And Testing Of Improved Spectral Unmixing Techniques, Daisei Konno

Theses

The tradeoff between spatial and spectral resolution gives rise to a finite ground sample size, which produces data with spectrally mixed pixels in a multispectral and hyperspectral systems. Assuming the mixed pixel to be a linear combination of pure spectra known as endmembers, the fractional abundance of the endmembers can be calculated by linear spectral unmixing. Constraints may be placed to force the unmixed fractions to behave realistically. There are also different methods of selecting these endmember spectra, including scene derived and laboratory measured spectra. The stepwise unmixing uses an iterative regression technique to select the optimal endmembers on a …

Comparison Of A Genetic Algorithm And Mathematical Programming To The Design Of Groundwater Cleanup Systems, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta Aug 1999

Comparison Of A Genetic Algorithm And Mathematical Programming To The Design Of Groundwater Cleanup Systems, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

We present and apply a new simulation/optimization approach for single- and multiple-planning period problems in groundwater remediation. Instead of the traditional control locations for contaminant concentrations, we use an LQC norm as a global measure of aquifer contamination (CMAX). We use response-surface constraints to represent CMAX within the optimization model. We compare the performance of formal mixed integer nonlinear programming and a genetic algorithm for several optimization scenarios.
