Anglo (Mis)Understandings Of Latino Newcomers: A North Georgia Case Study, Edmund T. Hamann
Anglo (Mis)Understandings Of Latino Newcomers: A North Georgia Case Study, Edmund T. Hamann
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This paper examines how Anglos in a small north Georgia city imagined, or conceptualized, Hispanics during the late 1990s as thousands of Spanish-speaking immigrant newcomers transformed the community’s demography. Based on two years of ethnographic research, the paper outlines the local play of several macro-social dynamics, such as businesses’ externalization of indirect costs, the ethnic segmentation of the work force, the use of sojourner labor, and the role of mediating institutions. The paper uses these dynamics to explain the emergence and sustenance of what Suárez-Orozco (1998) calls the “pro-immigration” and “anti-immigration scripts” and illustrates how these can be used to …
Stuffing The Isogrid, Eric Chaikin
Stuffing The Isogrid, Eric Chaikin
Word Ways
With the gunpowdery blacksmith at our side, we have hunted the biggest bisograms. In our next adventure, they will be stuffed and put on display. The "Nots and Crosses" contest in the July 1991 issue of Games Magazine put forth the following challenge: place a different word in each cell of a 3-by-3 tic-tac-toe grid ("noughts and crosses" for Anglophiles) so that no row, column, or corner-to-corner diagonal repeats a letter, with the object being to maximize the total number of letters in the grid.

And Sound As Sweet By Any Other Name?, Andrea Cantrell, Stephen J. Chism

Are some of us subconsciously drawn to jobs for which our names describe a primary product, action or tool with which we work? When parents name a child do they "bestow nomen atque omen," or a name and an omen [Plautus, Persa, act iv, scene 4]? Whether omens, directions, or merely humorous coincidence, the personal names in general use and career combinations listed below are offered for your amusement. Match the names in the second column with the occupations in the first.

Tench Coxe And The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, 1787-1823, Stephen P. Halbrook, David B. Kopel
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Tench Coxe, a member of the second rank of this nation's Founders and a leading proponent of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, wrote prolifically about the right to keep and bear arms. In this Article, the authors trace Coxe 's story, from his early writings in support of the Constitution, through his years of public service, to his political writings in opposition to the presidential campaigns of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. The authors note that Coxe described the Second Amendment as guaranteeing an individual right, and believed that an individual right to bear arms was necessary …

Book Review: Dorlikon An Der Grenze Des Wachstums. Zur Kulturgeschichte Einer Zürcher Dorfschaft Im 17. Jahrhundert., Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This impressive study has three main sections. The author offers, first, what he titles as Erzählung, that is narrative or story. In five chapters he gives a wealth of detail about the lives of the Dorlikon families, their struggle to meet the challenges of a sometimes harsh climate, their sparse resources due to bad harvests, the resulting loss of rented farms, and the cycles of birth, procreation, and death. Their valorous strivings as well as occasional misdeeds are reconstructed with meticulous concern for exact documentation. Key documents are cited in their original seventeenth century German. What emerges is a …

Sovereignty And Suspicion, Erik G. Luna
Sovereignty And Suspicion, Erik G. Luna
Duke Law Journal
Most academics agree that search and seizure jurisprudence is a "mess." Professor Luna proposes a new approach to the Fourth Amendment founded on a sovereignty-based theory of the Constitution. Under this individual rights model, a government search or seizure of an individual's home or body receives the strongest presumption of invalidity. This presumption, he argues, could only be rebutted in three discrete circumstances: (1) consent by the individual to search his home or body; (2) individualized suspicion of wrongdoing; or (3) real, direct, and substantial threats to the sovereignty of other persons. Apart from these exceptions, governmental intrusions into the …

Journal of Extension
A survey of 209 businesses of Immokalee, Florida was undertaken by 51 students in an effort to increase constructive youth involvement in the community. In view of the recommendations of local leaders and published information, the project involved eight principal and sequential activities: creating an Immokalee business directory; developing a survey; learning elementary statistics; learning and practicing survey techniques; understanding and doing public relations and promotions; making and keeping interview/survey appointments with businesses; presenting results; and conducting pre- and post-test evaluation of student participants. Benefits of the study accrue to the business sector, the schools, the students, and the community …

The History Of An Idea: The Scene On Stela 5 From Izapa, Mexico, As A Representation Of Lehi's Vision Of The Tree Of Life, Stewart W. Brewer
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Stela 5, a large stone monument discovered in 1941 in Izapa, Mexico, was identified a decade later by M. Wells Jakeman as a bas-relief of Lehi’s vision of the tree of life. Scholars and laymen alike have both accepted and scoffed at this theory. This article provides a historical sketch of reactions to this claim and discusses some of the implications of accepting or rejecting Jakeman’s theory. Jakeman was the first to publish an LDS interpretation of Stela 5; later V. Garth Norman proposed a different interpretation based on a series of high-quality photographs of the monument. Suzanne Miles, a …

New Light: The So-Called Lehi Cave, Lamar C. Berrett
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Berrett discusses point by point reasons why an ancient burial complex at Khirbet Beit Lei, sometimes called “Lehi’s cave,” is unlikely to have Book of Mormon connections. Brown describes a carved altar inscribed to the tribe Nihm discovered in the southwest Arabian peninsula (Yemen)—this location may be the place Nahom where Nephi’s father-in-law, Ishmael, was buried, according to the Book of Mormon record. The characters on the Anthon transcript reportedly taken by Martin Harris to New York to show to Professor Charles Anthon bear resemblance to characters on two Mexican seals made of baked clay. Szink identifies another possible Semitic …
