The Development Of One Teacher's Skills At Instructional Conversation, Becky O'Bryan Apr 1999

The Development Of One Teacher's Skills At Instructional Conversation, Becky O'Bryan

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined one teacher's learning and implementing instructional conversations (Tharp and Gallimore, 1988). She received assistance through opportunities to: 1) observe effective examples of instructional conversations; 2) practice skills and get immediate feedback through conversation; 3) read and discuss articles about instructional conversations and questioning techniques; and 4) read and comment on transcripts of lessons and follow-up conversations. Participant-observation, unstructured conversations, and interviews comprised the data, which included transcripts of audio-taped lessons, follow-up conversations, and interviews. There was a gradual shift in the teacher's practices from recitation to instructional conversation. Action, reflection, and collaborative talk became the process of …

At The Limits Of Language : The Challenge Of Modernist Literature To Translation Theories And Practice, Nigel B. R Reeves Apr 1999

At The Limits Of Language : The Challenge Of Modernist Literature To Translation Theories And Practice, Nigel B. R Reeves

文學與翻譯研究中心 論文叢刊 Centre for Literature and Translation Occasional Paper Series

It is a great pleasure to be able to address colleagues and students at Lingnan College on a fresh occasion.* And on this occasion I would like to begin by talking Nonsense!

There was an old man of Hong Kong
Who never did anything wrong;
He lay on his back, with his head in a sack,
That innocuous old man of Hong Kong.

Fortunately I did not have to invent this nonsense-it is of course a limerick by Edward Lear, the Victorian humorist poet. It illustrates vividly the problem which I want to debate with you today-the challenge of Modernist …

Flarr Pages #15: The Virtual Tourist: Travelogues From The Language Classroom, Kristine Butler

FLARR Pages

For many of us as teachers of language, the intermediate level marks a crucial point in the students' learning. In colleges and universities in which a minimum language requirement imposes either one you two years of study, the intermediate level can make or break a student's desire to go on learning.

A Directorial Approach: Tom Stoddard's Rosencrantz And Guidenstern Are Dead, Jason A. Stahr Apr 1999

A Directorial Approach: Tom Stoddard's Rosencrantz And Guidenstern Are Dead, Jason A. Stahr

Theses

This thesis presents a detailed directing journal and production analysis of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard, staged at Lindenwood University in 1999 as part of the requirements for the Master of Fine Arts in Theatre. The study explores the creative and practical processes of directing an absurdist play, with particular attention to Stoppard’s blending of existential themes, Shakespearean intertextuality, and metatheatrical devices.

The work follows Francis Hodge’s “Play Directing: Analysis, Communication, and Style” as the primary methodological framework, guiding the director from textual interpretation through rehearsals to performance. Key challenges addressed include balancing Stoppard’s humor with the …

On-Line Free Form Surface Measurement Via A Fuzzy-Logic Controlled Scanning Probe, Ming Chang, Paul P. Lin Apr 1999

On-Line Free Form Surface Measurement Via A Fuzzy-Logic Controlled Scanning Probe, Ming Chang, Paul P. Lin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a system and methodology for on-line free form surface measurement via a scanning contact probe installed on a CNC (computer numerical control) machine. The scanning probe provides more sampling points than any traditional touch trigger type of probes used on CNC machines, and better measuring accuracy than laser displacement sensing or structured lighting. The presented measuring system's main advantage is that the number of measured points can vary with the change of surface curvature. To improve the measuring stability and continuity, fuzzy logic control, in lieu of traditional PID control, is employed. As a result, the …

Contextualism: The Supreme Court's New Standard Of Judicial Analysis And Accountability, Shalin Sugunasiri Apr 1999

Contextualism: The Supreme Court's New Standard Of Judicial Analysis And Accountability, Shalin Sugunasiri

Dalhousie Law Journal

Over the past few years, the "contextual approach" to law has acquired considerable cachet in juridical discourses across the country. In the Supreme Court of Canada, contextualism is now the new standard of judicial analysis and accountability This article analyzes a decade of Supreme court jurisprudence on Charter interpretation, statutory interpretation and the common law in order to fully explicate what contextualism in law is, where it came from, and how it has achieved its current pre-eminent status. The future promise of the contextual approach is also here canvassed through a dialectical engagement with postmodernist concerns respecting inherent legal indeterminacies.

Annotated Language Laws Of Canada: Constitutional, Federal, Provincial And Territorial Laws, Teresa Scassa Apr 1999

Annotated Language Laws Of Canada: Constitutional, Federal, Provincial And Territorial Laws, Teresa Scassa

Dalhousie Law Journal

Many of Canada's language laws represent an attempt by governments to articulate national or provincial linguistic identities. How fitting, therefore, that Annotated Language Laws of Canada is a work which is itself in search of an identity. There is, in fact, some dissonance between what this book claims to be and what it actually is. Although its cover suggests that it is part of a series of "New Canadian Perspectives," there is little that is new (in the sense of original) in the work, other than the actual compilation. As for perspectives-one of the most striking absences in this work …

Educational Affirmations For Healthy Self-Esteem- An Exploratory Factor Analysis, Kaye L. Centers Apr 1999

Educational Affirmations For Healthy Self-Esteem- An Exploratory Factor Analysis, Kaye L. Centers

Dissertations

This investigation explored the underlying constructs of Clarke’s Educational Affirmations, a set of 54 statements designed to support the development of healthy self-esteem and the accomplishment of the developmental tasks of the psychosocial stages theorized by Erikson. The Preliminary Educational Affirmations Scale (PEAS), a transformed version of the Educational Affirmations, was devised and administered to 520 community college students. A principal components factor analysis of the results indicates the presence of two main factors that accounted for 28% of the total variance in the data, and offers partial support for the hypothesized factors of worthiness (Being) and competence (Doing).

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi Apr 1999

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Faculty Dissertations

For years, critics have used Black writers' interweaving of African-derived oral textual features and European written forms to reject the concept of the Great Divide between orality and writing in literacy studies. These critics primarily see the hybridized texts of writers of African descent as a model that assists in the complex union of writing and orality. My argument is that the integrationist model is not the only way, perhaps not even the most fruitful way, to read the hybridized texts of writers of African descent. I develop a reading of Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, and African-Canadian literature that sees the …

A Research Model Of Care-Givers And/Or Socializing Agents Explored In Terms Of Grandparenthood, Susanna Imelda Guadalupe Stephens Apr 1999

A Research Model Of Care-Givers And/Or Socializing Agents Explored In Terms Of Grandparenthood, Susanna Imelda Guadalupe Stephens

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A collection of secondary (literature) information which revealed the relevant elements and conditions that surround the psychosocial aspects of family kinships were integrated to form the Kin-Psychosocial-Systems Model (KPSS). The KPSS Model is an investigative model (that includes a set of inter-related concepts, definitions, and propositions) which presents a systematic view of family kinships by specifying relationships among culture and family social systems, care-giving and socialization, and psychosocial development for the purpose of providing researchers with a means for explaining and predicting psychological and social phenomena related to the expression and enactment of family kinships.

Interval Matching And Control For Hexahedral Mesh Generation Of Swept Volumes, Jason F. Shepherd Apr 1999

Interval Matching And Control For Hexahedral Mesh Generation Of Swept Volumes, Jason F. Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

Surface meshing algorithms require certain relationships among the number of intervals on the curves that bound the surface. Assigning the number of intervals to all of the curves in the model such that all relationships are satisfied is called interval assignment. Volume meshing algorithms also require certain relationships among the numbers of intervals on each of the curves on the volume. These relationships are not always captured by surface meshing requirements. This thesis presents a news technique for automatically identifying volume constraints. In this technique, volume constraints are grouped with surface constraints and are solved simultaneously. A sweepable volume has …

The Good Samaritan: A Type And Shadow Of The Plan Of Salvation, John W. Welch

What Is A Human Right? Universals And The Challenge Of Cultural Relativism, Paul Dubinsky, Jeremy Waldron, Tracy Higgins, Michel Rosenfeld, Ruti Teitel

Articles

The article explores the tension between the universality of human rights and the challenges posed by cultural relativism, emphasizing the need to reconcile these perspectives to address human rights violations effectively. While human rights are foundational and inherent to all individuals, their application must navigate cultural, moral, and legal complexities. The discussion highlights the importance of dialogue and adaptability in upholding universal principles while respecting diverse contexts.

Can Human Rights Bridge The Gap Between Universalism And Cultural Relativism? A Pluralist Assessment Based On The Rights Of Minorities, Michel Rosenfeld Apr 1999

Can Human Rights Bridge The Gap Between Universalism And Cultural Relativism? A Pluralist Assessment Based On The Rights Of Minorities, Michel Rosenfeld

Articles

The article argues that the debate between universalism and cultural relativism is mischaracterized and proposes pluralism as a mediating approach. It suggests that pluralism, particularly comprehensive pluralism, can reconcile the tensions between universal human rights and cultural diversity by balancing individual and group rights within a dynamic framework that respects both universal principles and particular contexts.
