Student Participation In The Academic Discourse Community: An Esl Student Working Independently And Esl Students Working With Writing Tutors, Heather J. Walker Dec 1999

Student Participation In The Academic Discourse Community: An Esl Student Working Independently And Esl Students Working With Writing Tutors, Heather J. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Penetration of the academic discourse community is a challenging obstacle for students who speak English as a Second Language. Not only are ESL students expected to understand academic concepts presented to them in a second language, but they are expected to demonstrate and refine these concepts through conceptual activities in another culture's written discourse. To handle this cognitive load, they rely on various strategies often effective but sometimes ineffective. Many ESL students have chosen the strategy of working with the tutors in a writing center. Other students have a more independent approach. What is the role of the tutors as …

Facilitative Or Favorable Conditions For Adult Learners To Acquire Oral Proficiency In English, Shigeko Suzuki Hironaga Dec 1999

Facilitative Or Favorable Conditions For Adult Learners To Acquire Oral Proficiency In English, Shigeko Suzuki Hironaga

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Social interaction in the language classroom has been said to contribute to the acquisition of oral proficiency in a target language by presumably facilitating comprehension and learner production through negotiation of meaning. Since a great portion of interaction is initiated by teacher questions, numerous studies on questions have been conducted. The majority of these studies, however, fail to provide adequate explanations for the conditions or environments which result in successful or unsuccessful elicitation. The study investigated the relationship between input, interaction and learner production with a focus on internal and external factors to teacher questions. Factors such as form, function, …

Student Development Outcomes In Service Learning For Teacher Education, Hilda A. Sramek

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Students in the Liberal Studies Track I program for teacher preparation at California State University, Long Beach, are required to participate in service learning. The SERVE (Service Experiences to ReVitaIize Education) Program provides training for the students. The purpose of this study was to develop a mechanism for infusing Chickering's psychosocial development model into the training. Two questions were asked: (a) given instruction in the model and support, are students able to apply the model to further their personal and professional development? and (b) what is the best way to implement the model in service learning training? Qualitative methodology was …

The Relationship Between Multicultural Counseling Competencies And Attitudes Toward African Americans Among White Female Graduate Students, Dianne T. Robinson Dec 1999

The Relationship Between Multicultural Counseling Competencies And Attitudes Toward African Americans Among White Female Graduate Students, Dianne T. Robinson

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between multicultural counseling competencies and attitudes toward African Americans among White female graduate students in counseling psychology. Participants were 67 White female students enrolled in either the master’s or doctoral level counseling psychology programs in a large Midwestern university. Subjects were administered four instruments. Participants’ self-perceived competencies in multicultural counseling were measured by the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (MCI, Sodowsky, Taffe, Gutkin, & Wise, 1994) and racial attitudes were measured by the Attitudes Toward Blacks Scale (ATB, Brigham, 1993). Demographic information as well as subjects’ level of participation in several activities …

Accounting For Change: Bringing Interdependence Into Defining Sustainability, Karen L. Nero Dec 1999

Accounting For Change: Bringing Interdependence Into Defining Sustainability, Karen L. Nero

Pacific Studies

“Sustainability,” the key word of international development bodies currently intervening in the restructuring of the Marshall Islands economy, is defined within Western economic conceptualizations. I argue that such characterizations are incomplete: they fail to capture the full nature of the ongoing Marshallese economy by focusing too narrowly on transfers related to the Compact of Free Association and by their partial understanding of Marshallese food systems and easy dichotomies between imported and local foods. The segregation of external interventions by sector further distorts their possible impact. Structural imbalances within the Marshallese and other Pacific nations’ economies have been exacerbated by the …

Site-Based Management And Student Achievement, Roxana Marie Hopkins Dec 1999

Site-Based Management And Student Achievement, Roxana Marie Hopkins

Dissertations

The question that this study seeks to answer is. Does site-based management increase student achievement? Researchers believe that when a school can function more like a closed system, involved in site-based decision making, the culture of the organization may be more conducive to higher student achievement. This study has attempted to determine if there is a basis for this belief.

Supporting the study are three organization theories. Bureaucracy Theory, Systems Theory, and Human Resource Development Theory. These three theories run like threads in a tapestry throughout the research and legislation upon which this research is developed.

Researchers, up to this …

Elderly Respondents' Perceptions Of Patronizing Speech By Service Providers Toward Elderly Adults., Tammi Rae La Tourette Dec 1999

Elderly Respondents' Perceptions Of Patronizing Speech By Service Providers Toward Elderly Adults., Tammi Rae La Tourette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of several factors in elderly respondents' evaluations of neutral and patronizing speech by nurses toward elderly targets. Thirty-eight nursing home and 62 community Caucasian elderly women viewed two videotaped vignettes, one in which a nurse spoke to an elder target in a patronizing tone, and one with a neutral tone. Both samples rated the nurse more favorably, rated the elder target more satisfied with the conversation, and assumed that the nurse-elder dyad knew each other better when the nurse's speech was neutral as opposed to patronizing. Contrary to what was predicted, community elders did not …

Fiction, Biography, Autobiography, And Postmodern Nostalgia In (Con)Texts Of Return, Patricia D. Fox Dec 1999

Fiction, Biography, Autobiography, And Postmodern Nostalgia In (Con)Texts Of Return, Patricia D. Fox

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Patricia D. Fox discusses in her article, "Fiction, Biography, Autobiography, and Postmodern Nostalgia in (Con)Texts of Return," the meditations, in novel and essay, of variously positioned writers and protagonists as each contemplates return to a never glimpsed or long-lost geographical and cultural center. Attempting to decipher the grounding in place and time, by heritage or tradition, Fox's analysis juxtaposes selected texts: Hungarian Rhapsodies: Essays on Ethnicity, Identity and Culture (Richard Teleky, 1997); Out of America: A Black Man Confronts Africa (Keith B. Richburg, 1998); Dreaming in Cuban: A Novel (Cristina García, 1992); The Hundred Secret Senses (Amy Tan, 1995); Next …

A Comparative Approach To European Folk Poetry And The Erotic Wedding Motif, Louise O. Vasvari Dec 1999

A Comparative Approach To European Folk Poetry And The Erotic Wedding Motif, Louise O. Vasvari

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "A Comparative Approach to European Folk Poetry and the Erotic Wedding Motif," Louise O. Vasvari posits that while the corpus of folk poetry in any one area of Europe always differs from neighboring traditions, of greater interest is the existence of a large amount of related material across the continent. Nevertheless, while research in folk poetry has been rich in field collecting and cataloguing, there exists little in-depth comparative study of folk poetry. Doubtless, this is owing in part to the fact that the great majority of the texts are accessible only in the original language or …

Literature, "In-House" Writers, And Processes Of Success In Publishing, Frank De Glas Dec 1999

Literature, "In-House" Writers, And Processes Of Success In Publishing, Frank De Glas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Frank de Glas discusses in his article, "Literature, 'In-House' Writers, and Processes of Success in Publishing," the fact that too many studies of twentieth-century publishing practices concentrate on individual case studies while neglecting more general patterns and that too little use is made of theoretical concepts developed in the sociology of cultural production. He argues that one of the contributing elements in the economic and artistic success of a publishing house is the bringing together of a productive group of "in-house authors." To build up and to maintain such a group, publishers steadily launch new authors who they hope will …

The Romantic Poetry Of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Tonya Maristine Scott Dec 1999

The Romantic Poetry Of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Tonya Maristine Scott

Theses (Pre-2016)

The challenge that present scholars have to face is constructing a literary history that includes the aesthetics of Dunbar, which is traceable to and predetermined by the experimental, Romantic tendencies of Longinus, Wordsworth and Coleridge. Therefore, application of the literary trends and techniques of the Romantic era, which emphasizes the Expressive theory, lends itself to the hypothesis of this study: Dunbar's nature lyrics, like those of the British Romantics, reflect experiments with language, tone and subject matter as prefigured by Longinus, Wordsworth and Coleridge. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the literary English works of Paul Laurence Dunbar …

Components Related To Occupational Stress Or Burnout Among Music Therapists Working In Hospice/Palliative Care Arenas, Dorothy Virginia Pienta

Masters Theses

Music therapists who work in hospice/palliative care settings are susceptible to burnout as well as others who work in health care settings. In this descriptive correlation study, the components of occupational stress or burnout among music therapists working in hospice/palliative care settings were studied. A mail survey was sent to 300 music therapists who worked in hospice/palliative care settings and were members of the American Music Therapy Association. Of the 181 surveys that were returned, 106 were acceptable for use in this study. Their responses to the Maslach Burnout Inventory, Work Environment Scale, as well as information from the demographic …

Implementation Of Speech Recognition Software For Text Processing: An Exploratory Analysis, Sean P. Abell Dec 1999

Implementation Of Speech Recognition Software For Text Processing: An Exploratory Analysis, Sean P. Abell

Theses and Dissertations

The rationale behind implementing new information technologies is often to gain productivity improvements associated with the substitution of machinery for labor. However, the literature shows little direct evidence of a positive relationship between information technology investment and subsequent productivity benefits. This thesis reports on the examination into the productivity implications of implementing speech recognition software in a text processing environment. More specifically, research was conducted to compare text processing speeds and error rates using speech recognition software versus the keyboard and mouse. Of interest was the time required to input and proofread text processing tasks as well as the number …
