Assimilation In The Name Of Pluralism: Education, Law And Religion In Ontario, Canada, Ken Badley Jan 1999

Assimilation In The Name Of Pluralism: Education, Law And Religion In Ontario, Canada, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Draw a Venn diagram with three circles, one called law, one called religion and one called education. This chapter explores the overlap among these. The frrst half involves two clusters of questions. First, it asks what the questions, in fact, are, dealing first with issues concerning religion in publicly-funded schools. A second cluster of questions concerns those flashpoint issues of curriculum identified by religious parents and the independent religious schools some of them choose for their children. Throughout the chapter, I make reference to recent court cases involving religion and education in the Canadian province of Ontario, usually following those …

Differential Diagnosis Of Late Onset Psychosis Using Neuropsychological Assessment And Neuroimaging Techniques, Susan Fralick Ball Jan 1999

Differential Diagnosis Of Late Onset Psychosis Using Neuropsychological Assessment And Neuroimaging Techniques, Susan Fralick Ball

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Few references in the literature have been made with respect to the diagnosis of late onset psychosis by the use of behavioral observations coupled with neuropsychological and neuroimaging techniques. This is a report of the case of a 68-year-old woman who experienced a sudden onset of psychotic illness characterized by delusions and confabulation. As part of her neurobehavioral evaluation, a SPECT scan revealed right frontal and left anterior temporal lobe hypoperfusion. Serial neuropsychological evaluations demonstrated decline on tests of executive control (monitoring, allocation of attention, perseveration) and visuospatial abilities, whereas performance in other areas of cognitive functioning remained close to …

Bringing The Standards Into The Classroom: A Case Study Of One School District's Implementation Process, Georgia Sarroub, Aleidine Kramer Moeller Jan 1999

Bringing The Standards Into The Classroom: A Case Study Of One School District's Implementation Process, Georgia Sarroub, Aleidine Kramer Moeller

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In 1993 federal funding was provided for the development of national foreign language standards for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The resulting content standards (Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Preparingfor the 21st Century) define what students should know and be able to do in grades four, eight, and twelve and were intended to "serve as a gauge for excellence" (National Standards in Foreign Language Learning Project 1996, 13). Like the mathematics goals, the foreign language goals were viewed as criteria for excellence rather than as a minimum level of competency (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics 1989, 2).

Major Litigation Activities Regarding Major Life Activities: The Failure Of The Disability Definition In The Americans With Disabilities Act Of 1990, Lisa A. Eichhorn Jan 1999

Major Litigation Activities Regarding Major Life Activities: The Failure Of The Disability Definition In The Americans With Disabilities Act Of 1990, Lisa A. Eichhorn

Faculty Publications

The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") in 1990 has been praised as the major accomplishment of the disability rights movement. This statute, however, is not without its flaws. Perhaps the most problematic one is the way in which “disability” is defined. Lisa Eichhorn argues that the definition undercuts the effectiveness of the ADA. She begins with a historical look at society’s concepts of disability and discusses how these concepts were incorporated into the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the ADA. She then examines cases that have been dismissed because plaintiffs cannot prove disabled status, which illustrate the …

The Relationship Of Math Anxiety Andeducational Cognitive Style To Achievement In A Mathematics Content Course For Preservice Elementary Teachers, Rita L. Eisele

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Past research has shown that many preservice elementary teachers exhibit high levels of math anxiety. Knowledge about the learning styles of preservice elementary teachers can provide information to further the understanding of math anxiety. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of math anxiety andEducational cognitive style to achievement in a mathematics content course for preservice elementary teachers. One hundred fifty students enrolled in two mathematics content courses at a public midwestern university served as the population. An abbreviated version of the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) was used to measure math anxiety. The Albany Instrument, which …

Confusion About Custom: Disentangling Informal Customs From Standard Contractual Provisions, Richard A. Epstein Jan 1999

Confusion About Custom: Disentangling Informal Customs From Standard Contractual Provisions, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

To see how custom should be integrated with contract law, it is important to isolate an important ambiguity that creeps into the innocent phrase "customary commercial term." One interpretation of this phrase stresses that most complex commercial arrangements are incomplete. Customary commercial terms are thus thought to offer the ideal set of gap fillers when commercial agreements are silent: hence the role of "unless otherwise agreed" in the UCC. Yet in many cases, a "customary commercial term" carries with it another distinct meaning: it refers to those express provisions that the parties commonly incorporate into commercial arrangements. Sometimes these explicit …

Minority Protections And Bilateral Agreements: An Effective Mechanism, Elizabeth F. Defeis Jan 1999

Minority Protections And Bilateral Agreements: An Effective Mechanism, Elizabeth F. Defeis

UC Law SF International Law Review

Following the breakup of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, attention focused on developing international norms, agreements and regimes for effective minority protection. Under the auspices of United Nations and regional organizations, multilateral and bilateral treaties and declarations have been adopted. These documents recognize that diverse initiatives are necessary to reduce ethnic conflict and encourage States to implement appropriate initiatives. Reliance upon bilateral agreements is particularly encouraged in those situations involving protection of minorities in a situation where ethnic minorities reside in States adjacent to or near their country of nationality as a result of change of boarders or the …
