Metaphor And Understanding: The Work Of Lakoff And Johnson And Natural Language Processing, Karen M. Jakubowsky Jan 1999

Metaphor And Understanding: The Work Of Lakoff And Johnson And Natural Language Processing, Karen M. Jakubowsky

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Do you remember your first lesson in metaphor? Most likely, you learned that it is a comparison of one thing to another, to give a more descriptive account of something. "He was an iceberg" or "time is money" are obvious metaphors. They are regarded as simply vivid expressions to explain our ideas. However, George Lakoff, professor of linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Mark Johnson, professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon, assert that metaphors are much more than literary devices. In their 1980 book, Metaphors We Live By, they claim that the way we think, act, …

Ordinary Children Extraordinary Legacies: Childhood During The American Civil War, Deborah S. Holder Jan 1999

Ordinary Children Extraordinary Legacies: Childhood During The American Civil War, Deborah S. Holder

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

War heroes do not have to wear uniforms, display meritorious medals for bravery and sacrifice, or voluntarily fight for their country in military regiments. The real heroes are all people touched by conflict. The strategy of war positions the powerful against the powerless, thereby creating an absurd imbalance within society. Hence, ordinary citizens become heroes not by decision but by circumstance; had they a choice, they most certainly would not choose to participate in war. Joseph Heller once said about his war novel: "Catch-22 says that people in power have a right to do to us anything we can't stop …

Continuous Models Of Computation For Logic Programs: Importing Continuous Mathematics Into Logic Programming's Algorithmic Foundations, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, David W. Jakel, Angel J. Rivera, Metin Sezgin Jan 1999

Continuous Models Of Computation For Logic Programs: Importing Continuous Mathematics Into Logic Programming's Algorithmic Foundations, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, David W. Jakel, Angel J. Rivera, Metin Sezgin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Logic programs may be construed as discrete-time and continuous-time dynamical systems with continuous states. Techniques for obtaining explicit formulations of such dynamical systems are presented and the computational performance of examples is presented. Extending 2-valued and n-valued logic to continuousvalued logic is shown to be unique, up to choosing the representations of the individual truth values as elements of a continuous field, provided that lowest degree polynomials are selected. In the case of 2-valued logic, the constraint that enables the uniqueness of the continualization is that the Jacobian matrices of the continualizations of the Boolean connectives have only affine entries. …

What Is Constitutional Theory?, David A. Strauss Jan 1999

What Is Constitutional Theory?, David A. Strauss

Articles

Just what is constitutional theory? How can it be, as Professor Fallon rightly says, that constitutional theory is both descriptive and prescriptive, and is supposed to produce results that seem morally right but also some results that make the theory's proponents uncomfortable? In this Reply, Professor Strauss argues that a constitutional theory tries to draw upon bases of agreement that exist within a legal culture and to extend those agreed-upon principles to resolve more controversial issues. In our culture, for example, there is widespread agreement both on abstract principles- such as the idea that the text of the Constitution is …

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act As A Threat To Global Harmony, Steven R. Salbu Jan 1999

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act As A Threat To Global Harmony, Steven R. Salbu

Michigan Journal of International Law

Focusing primarily on the pragmatic and moral perils of cultural imperialism, I also alluded very briefly to a "political peril" that arises from the FCPA. This peril consists of the added risk of cross-national hostility that is attributable to officious and overreaching legislation across national borders. This article will examine the political hazard in greater detail, explaining why the proliferation of FCPA-style legislation unjustifiably increases the threat to global harmony.

Juegos De Educatión: Collection Of Student-Centered Spanish Language Activities In A Web Based Format, Geoff W. Bullis, Jenny R. Smith

All Graduate Projects

This project incorporates the use of games and activities as supplemental resources with today's technology enhanced environment. It was designed to create an easily accessible resource for teachers of Spanish language instruction. Our project focused on creating a Web site on the Internet which included several student-centered activities. The development of the project included research of similar Web sites, literature regarding best teaching practices and methods, Gardner's multiple intelligences, specifically bodily/kinesthetic intelligence, and a teacher questionnaire focusing on the need for the project. Through the research and questionnaire it was determined that a dearth of Web-based resources are available to …

Promoting Phonological Awareness In Young Children Through At-Home Activities: A Video Curriculum, Kathleen A. Kwak Jan 1999

Promoting Phonological Awareness In Young Children Through At-Home Activities: A Video Curriculum, Kathleen A. Kwak

All Graduate Projects

Research relating phonological awareness, beginning reading acquisition, and parental involvement in children's literacy development was read, evaluated, and summarized. A positive relationship between phonological awareness and learning to read was indicated from this review, and a correlation between parental literacy activities and children's language and reading acquisition was found. Studies suggesting the existence of a developmental sequence of phonological skills were examined. The literature review provided a rationale and design for phonological awareness instruction. A research supported curriculum containing a teacher's manual, take-home interactive video activities and activity sheets, and assessments was created.

Inventing Academic Discourse: Teaching (And Learning) Marginal Poise And Fugitive Truth, Jane Hindman Jan 1999

Inventing Academic Discourse: Teaching (And Learning) Marginal Poise And Fugitive Truth, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

This article further develops earlier versions of transformative pedagogy (e.g., Bartholomae and Petrosky's, Bizzell's, Lu's, Horner's), demonstrating how the self-reflexive tactics required in an analysis of professional practice make visible the ways that compositionists authorize academic discourse. David Bartholomae describes this as the teachers' unconscious need to "see ourselves in what [students] do." The pedagogical method proposed explains how features like "objectivity," "clarity," and [constraining] "voice" in academic discourse are misrecognized in our own rhetoric AND in our evaluations of our students. Because we demand these stylistic and institutionalized conventions of academic discourse from our students, we should-the paper argues-include …

Memoirs And Meaning, Jill Ker Conway

Marianist Award Lectures

Jill Ker Conway reflects on the meanings and influences that certain memoirs had upon her formation, including those of social worker Jane Adams and birth control activist Margaret Sanger. She emphasizes the notion of a drama as a reflection of the human condition and the role that religious traditions have in promoting real memoirs that inspire and motivate.

Renegotiating Previous Governments' Privatization Deals: The 1997 U.K. Windfall Tax On Utilities And International Law, Thomas W. Waelde, Abba Kolo Jan 1999

Renegotiating Previous Governments' Privatization Deals: The 1997 U.K. Windfall Tax On Utilities And International Law, Thomas W. Waelde, Abba Kolo

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Investment in privatized utilities leads to a very particular form of political risk--the risk that regulatory conditions change and special taxes are imposed, all measures within the sovereign powers of the state. The normal forms of protection against political risk (investment insurance, stabilization clauses, international investment treaties and international arbitration clauses) have not yet caught up with the emergence of new forms of political risk. The 1997 UK windfall tax announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in that year's budget speech is a case in point. This issue is not limited purely to the contemporary UK situation, but illustrates …

The Republic Of Turkey In Europe: Reconsidering The Luxembourg Exclusion, Patrick R. Hugg Jan 1999

The Republic Of Turkey In Europe: Reconsidering The Luxembourg Exclusion, Patrick R. Hugg

Fordham International Law Journal

The EU's rebuff of Turkey's application for accession represents more than a missed opportunity to strengthen and deepen the relationship between these two related spheres. Indeed, the lack of finesse--the unnecessarily impolitic form of the rejection--propels Turkey in the opposite direction. The old assumption that relations with Europe were of primary importance is “subject to increasingly critical examination.” Acknowledging that Turkey may not be ready for accession in the next wave, the EU should have pursued some less antagonizing route. The premature decision to begin negotiations with Cyprus only intensifies the conflict.

Perspectives On Competition Law: Problems And Solutions, David A.O. Edward Jan 1999

Perspectives On Competition Law: Problems And Solutions, David A.O. Edward

Fordham International Law Journal

This essay suggests that it does not follow that competition between jurisdictions is good merely because competition between economic operators in pursuit of economic goals is a good thing. The result, as the discussion on television indicated, may simply be a jurisdictional mess, as Dr. Markus Wagemann put it. You end up with all sorts of people seeking to pursue their own values: cultural values, regional values, and linguistic values; and the economic operator simply does not know where he or she stands in this jurisdictional competition. This point can perhaps be completed by simply mentioning a remark made to …

Metaphorically Speaking: Putting Las Vegas On The Cultural Map, Ester Sara O Fearghail Jan 1999

Metaphorically Speaking: Putting Las Vegas On The Cultural Map, Ester Sara O Fearghail

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Las Vegas has art galleries, an art museum, a Cultural and Community Affairs Division. It also supports the Allied Arts Council of Southern Nevada and a southern branch of the Nevada Arts Council. Clearly, art and art advocates are present in Las Vegas. Yet, Las Vegas is traditionally viewed as a town with no culture and, furthermore, as a place that it is incompatible with art; This paper is a study of the relationship people believe Las Vegas has to art. I have used the methodology of Lakoff and Johnson's theory of conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson: 1980) to analyze …

A Brain For Language And The Language Of The Brain, Guillermo A. Cecchi Jan 1999

A Brain For Language And The Language Of The Brain, Guillermo A. Cecchi

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of three sections. In the first one, we overview the basic concepts and results of computation theory, the relationship with formal language theory, and present an introduction to the possible applications to different biological systems. The second section deals with the role of noise in the transmission of information in neurons. We show that a key component of the dynamics of action potential generation in neurons, the rectification of ionic flow and negative incremental resistance to ionic gradient, can occur in Brownian transport in the environment of the cell by a purely entropic effect, i.e. driven by …
