Physicians As Advocates, William M. Sage
Physicians As Advocates, William M. Sage
Faculty Scholarship
The principal theme of this Article is that many dimensions of physicians' advocacy in managed care remain to be established, and those dimensions may turn out to be inconsistent with one another or with normative goals for the health care system. Specifically, attempting to map physician behavior onto an advocacy template created for lawyers raises three difficult questions. First, given the undisputed importance of clinical expertise to an efficient health care system, should physicians' primary role be to advocate for causes or to direct the provision of care? Second, would the medical professions' reputation for independent competence withstand the adversarial …

Housing For All: Addressing The Housing Needs Of Massachusetts' North Shore Residents, Theresa Mason, Elaine Werby, Caroline Coscia, Lisa Ward, Donna Friedman
Center for Social Policy Publications
The aim of this report is to support North Shore efforts to build a regional approach to housing.
The report explores the housing needs of people who are caught in the squeeze between low incomes and high housing costs. The report has two goals:
- to provide information for understanding the need to expand below market rate housing;
- to illustrate that need by providing detailed documentation on the situation in Gloucester, Peabody, and Salem.
The report is not intended to propose solutions, but to provide groundwork for solutions.

Supplemental Security Income - An Underused Resource For Disabled Tanf Recipients In Illinois, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Michael A. O'Connor
Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works
This paper reviews the literature that assesses the incidence of severe impairments among parents and children receiving AFDC and TANF, and projects that analysis to estimate the number of persons eligible for, but not receiving SSI in the Illinois TANF caseload. The paper also reviews current investment in screening for eligibility and pursuing SSI benefits for TANF recipients, and articulates a rationale for further investment. Prior research supports an estimate that between 8-12,000 children, and 4- 18,000 parents in the Illinois TANF caseload are SSI eligible but not enrolled. This paper describes strategies and costs necessary to promote full enrolment …
