Extension Organization Of The Future: Linking Emotional Intelligence And Core Competencies, Deliece Ayers, Barbara Stone

Journal of Extension

Recruiting, hiring, and keeping desirable employees have been fundamental goals in institutions since before the Industrial Revolution. Traditionally, developing an exceptional workforce has been a hit-or-miss process. Recently, however, national and international organizations like Amoco, Dupont, Federal Express, and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service building a workforce for the 21st century. have developed competency models to lure and keep good workers. Part of competency models is the idea that high emotional intelligence is valuable. Emotional Intelligence and competencies are a natural fit, and they will, no doubt, become increasingly popular as organizations recognize their importance in building a workforce for …

Community Mapping Exercises Provide Enhanced Participant Interaction In Visioning Processes, Connie Bodeen, Mark Hilliker

Journal of Extension

The public sector has utilized a variety of techniques to plan for the future since the 1950s. As these techniques have evolved, so has the level of public participation. Community Visioning processes used today rely heavily on public input. Community Mapping exercises provide enhancements to the visioning process by providing a more interactive and tactile method for creating a future vision for a community. By working in small groups and creating "Big and Bold Ideas" on a large-format map, participants create a graphic image of the future of their community that provides a platform for implementation.

Taking R&E To The Next Level, Thomas W. Blaine, Stephen Hudkins, Charles R. Taylor

Journal of Extension

During the late 1980s, the business retention and expansion (R&E) program emerged as one of the most successful programs in Ohio State University Extension's Community Development area. As the economic recovery of the early 1990s turned into an economic expansion, business and civic leaders began to shift focus from general R&E efforts to issues related to labor force preparedness. A survey of businesses in Portage County undertaken four years after completion of an R&E program reveals that, while employers believe that local resources are available to help improve basic math and communication skills of employees, those skill levels are still …

Feedback In Distance Education: Broadening Electronic Communication Pathways

Journal of Extension

This article explores how one distance education program has maximized the use of electronic mail for exchanging information between professors and students in a distance education environment. The article discusses issues that face distance educators when using electronic mail for exchanging course materials and offers possible solutions for effective student homework submission and professor feedback. The authors recommend a practical system for exchanging written student-professor communication using the Adobe PDF computer file format which provides a cost-effective solution to many course process problems inherent in distance education settings.

Forming Strategic Alliances: Issues In Conceptualisation, Nagasimha Balakrishna Kanagal

IIMB Management Review

The interactive and interdependent economy of the present day is rooted in exchanges or 'give and take' of varying complexity. The process of conceptualising, planning and executing exchanges to the benefit of all players involved is basic to marketing. Given the three generic forms of economic organisation - market, hybrid and hierarchy, organisational expansions in high technology markets in recent times have witnessed the emergence of hybrid strategic alliances as an alternative to markets and hierarchies. Strategic alliances enable functional integration in inter-firm relationships involving tangible and intangible exchanges. Rapid technological innovations and technological complexity, and forces such as uncertainty, …

The Environment And Working Conditions In Juvenile Boot Camps And Traditional Facilities, Ojmarrh Mitchell, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Angela Gover, Gaylene Armstrong Dec 1999

The Environment And Working Conditions In Juvenile Boot Camps And Traditional Facilities, Ojmarrh Mitchell, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Angela Gover, Gaylene Armstrong

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This national study of juvenile correctional facilities compared the correctional environments of 25 juvenile boot camps to those of 22 traditional juvenile facilities. Data on perceived environmental conditions for juveniles and work climate for staff, as well as demographic characteristics, were collected from 1,233 juvenile correctional facility staff. While there was some regional variation, in comparison to staff employed in traditional juvenile correctional facilities, boot camp staff perceived the environmental conditions for juveniles as having significantly more activity, control, justice, structure, caring, and therapeutic programming, and believed that their releases were better prepared for the future. Boot staff also perceived …

Internally Constrained Mixtures Of Elastic Continua, Stephen M. Klisch Dec 1999

Internally Constrained Mixtures Of Elastic Continua, Stephen M. Klisch

Mechanical Engineering

A treatment of internally constrained mixtures of elastic continua at a common temperature is developed. Internal constraints involving the deformation gradient tensors and the common mixture temperature are represented by a constraint manifold, and an internally constrained mixture of elastic continua is associated with each unique equivalence class of unconstrained mixtures. The example of intrinsic incompressibility of each constituent first proposed by Mills is discussed.

Symbolic Politics: Government's War Against The Working Class, Warren Charles Gregory Dec 1999

Symbolic Politics: Government's War Against The Working Class, Warren Charles Gregory

Dissertations

Symbolism and substance are essential parts of any political system. In our system of government, we typically think of symbolism as serving substantive ends. Using a triangulation of _methods (Participant Observation, Archival Data, and Documentary Evidence), the paper examines two cases (Social Security and criminal justice) and concludes that the mix between substance and symbolism has changed dramatically in recent years with symbolism now assuming the central role.

The current debates over Social Security funding and criminal justice sanctions, for example, are less about the concerns of old-age security or making the public safer as much as they reflect a …

Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education

Teaching At Medical School, Paul P. L. Chang Dec 1999

Teaching At Medical School, Paul P. L. Chang

Journal of Medical Education

The 1910 Abraham Flexner recommendation, which changed medical education inAmerica, was introduced to Peking Union Medical College(PUMC)in 1917 when theschool was established with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. This same educationprinciple was adopted by National Taiwan University College of Medicine in the early1950s.The rapid advances in medical science have made it impossible to teach all theconcepts and topics in our curriculum.Even the experts have knowledge gaps in their specialties.Only the essential knowledge necessary to prepare the student for clinical problemsolving should be included in a digestible medical curriculum executed by the appropriateteaching methods.Information management is imperative to preserve our sanity. To practicemedicine, our students …

Teaching Of Bioethics And Training Of Socially Responsible Physicians, Michael Cheng-Tek Tai, Hsin-Chen Hsin, Ming-Been Lee

Journal of Medical Education

A superior physician is hard to come by.Modern society may have changed so muchthat such an expectation is regarded as unrealistic.Yet with physicians' traditional high socialstatus, medical education must set a noble goal to pursue. The question of whether aphysician can heal and in the meantime be concerned with social harmony and justicearises. It depends on the exemplary role of instructors and the content of the educationalprogram.Medical education is to pass on a humanized medicine so that medical studentsmay understand, experience and grasp the humanistic philosophy of medicine and thusestablish their own theories on values, ethical standards and eventually their own life philosophy.Only when we …

Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education
