Housing For All: Addressing The Housing Needs Of Massachusetts' North Shore Residents, Theresa Mason, Elaine Werby, Caroline Coscia, Lisa Ward, Donna Friedman

Center for Social Policy Publications

The aim of this report is to support North Shore efforts to build a regional approach to housing.

The report explores the housing needs of people who are caught in the squeeze between low incomes and high housing costs. The report has two goals:

  1. to provide information for understanding the need to expand below market rate housing;
  2. to illustrate that need by providing detailed documentation on the situation in Gloucester, Peabody, and Salem.

The report is not intended to propose solutions, but to provide groundwork for solutions.

The Calling Of Criminal Defense, Abbe Smith, William Montross Mar 1999

The Calling Of Criminal Defense, Abbe Smith, William Montross

Mercer Law Review

INTRODUCTION: A HOSTILE CLIMATE FOR CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS AND OUR CLIENTS

Criminal defense work is an increasingly difficult undertaking in these harsh times. Blame is a favorite pastime. Vengeance follows close behind. Compassion for those who commit wrongdoing out of misfortune seems either nostalgic or naive. Instead, there is a universal call for individual accountability; wrongdoers ought to be held strictly responsible for their actions, no matter the circumstance.

Along with blame and vengeance comes a lust for punishment. The public cannot seem to get enough of it. The United States is building prisons at a record pace. If the …

Educational Experiences And Shifts In Group Consciousness: Studying Women, Donna Henderson-King, Abigail J. Stewart

Peer Reviewed Articles

This study takes a multifaceted approach to group consciousness. The authors assessed changes in women’s feminist consciousness due to their exposure to feminism through women’s studies. Feminist consciousness was measured at the beginning and end of a semester during which some research participants were enrolled in an introductory women’s studies course. Women’s studies students were compared with students who were interested, but not enrolled, in women’s studies. As expected, women’s studies students showed an increase on several aspects of feminist consciousness, whereas non–women’s studies students did not. Non–women’s studies students became less sensitive to sexism. It is also noteworthy that, …

Establishing An Environmental Audit Privilege To Promote Implementation Of The Iso 14000 Standards, James E. Plumhoff

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This comment will attempt to address some of the issues surrounding the ISO 14000 standards and also the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme or EMAS standards. Part II of the comment will discuss the evolution and need for international standards such as ISO 14000 and EMAS. Part III will analyze the challenges to successful implementation of ISO and EMAS, particularly concentrating on the problems which may arise from the proliferation of information due to increased EMS audits. Part IV suggests that ISO audit privilege legislation be adopted by the U.S. Congress and that an ISO audit policy be adopted by the …

Nebulized Nitroglycerin In Children With Pulmonary Hypertension Secondary To Congenital Heart Disease, Hatim Omar, Fangqi Gong, Mei Y. Sun, Stanley Einzig

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Pulmonary hypertension continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality, despite new treatments. Since inhaled nitric oxide has been reported to be effective in some cases, we investigated using nebulized nitroglycerine to treat pulmonary hypertension in children with congenital heart disease. Four children (ages 6-72 months) with severe pulmonary hypertension secondary to congenital heart disease (all with membranous ventricular septal defect, undergoing cardiac catheterization) were given 3 cc of nebulized normal saline over 10 min as placebo control, followed by nebulized nitroglycerine (20 micrograms/Kg in 3 cc normal saline). Normal saline administration did not elicit any change, but …

Developing Online Learning Materials For Higher Education: An Overview Of Current Issues, C. Jayne Brahler, Nils S. Peterson, Emily C. Johnson

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

The changing roles and challenges for higher education and the increased productivity required of faculty are driving forces for the development of more diverse and efficient teaching methods. Educational trends are toward more learner-centered materials. In response to these trends, colleges and universities are now offering courses at a distance and in forms other than traditional delivery.

Online courseware materials may be a viable means of fulfilling these numerous requirements but are very resource-intensive to develop. Multiple approaches to developing online learning have been tried, with limited success. The primary approach has been for faculty to enter their own course …

Bragdon V. Abbott: Is Asymptomatic Hiv A Per Se Disability Under The Americans With Disabilities Act?, Amy C. Reeder

Mercer Law Review

In Bragdon v. Abbott, the United States Supreme Court held that asymptomatic HIV is a "disability" under the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") because it is a physical impairment that substantially limits the major life activity of reproduction. It further held that determining whether a plaintiff is entitled to relief requires objective and particularized evidence of the risks to the defendant under the "direct threat" provisions of the ADA. This Casenote focuses exclusively on the "disability" holding.

Revising The Kogan Scale: A Test Of Local Television News Producers' Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Michael L. Hilt, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz Mar 1999

Revising The Kogan Scale: A Test Of Local Television News Producers' Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Michael L. Hilt, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz

Communication Faculty Publications

The Kogan Attitudes Toward Old People Scale (1961) was revised and used to measure local television news producer attitudes toward elderly people. The importance of local television news in the lives of older people makes the study of producers’ attitudes relevant. A national mail survey of producers found that, whereas there were few older news producers, as a group they had positive attitudes toward older people. The study successfully reduced the Kogan scale from 34 to 22 items without altering the overall response pattern.

Echoes Of The “Misfounding” Of Public Administration: The Voices Of Generation X, Gary S. Marshall, Christine M. Reed Mar 1999

Echoes Of The “Misfounding” Of Public Administration: The Voices Of Generation X, Gary S. Marshall, Christine M. Reed

Public Administration Faculty Publications

This paper build on previous research into the "X Generation, " in particular their apparent cynicism about all theories of organization as being mere strategies of manipulation. Their voices were described in that study as "the voice of a new cohort of students that we will increasingly find in our classrooms" (Marshall, 1997). Current MPA students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha participated in focus group discussions designed to elicit information about their motivations for enrolling in our graduate program. Initial findings confirmed the organizational commitment of older age cohorts, as well as their identification with large governmental institutions. …
