Inside A Swiss Army Knife: An Assessment Of Americorps, James L. Perry, Ann Marie Thomson, Mary Tschirhart, Debra Mesh, Geunjoo Lee

Service Learning, General

This study reviews the goals and achievements of AmeriCorps, the national service program championed by President Clinton and approved by Congress in 1993. We identify five AmeriCorps goals: satisfying unmet social needs, developing corps members, enhancing the civic ethic, reinvigorating lethargic bureaucracies, and bridging race and class. The evidence of AmeriCorps' effectiveness is not definitive. Self-reports from recipient programs, selective cost-benefit analyses, and some survey evidence indicate some positive results. More fine-grained survey and field research raise questions about AmeriCorps' overall effects. Much more research is needed before policy makers and citizens can determine AmeriCorps' productivity.

This Article grounds its exploration within the contested terrain of the city, not simply as a legal or juridical concept, but in terms of its reality as a lived place on the eve of the 21st century. The Story Behind Yakoana: An Interview With Anh Crutcher, Dale Stover Apr 1999

The Story Behind Yakoana: An Interview With Anh Crutcher, Dale Stover

Journal of Religion & Film

Remarkably, the indigenous peoples in 1992, having endured centuries of severe oppression, took the political initiative to confront the nations represented at the Earth Summit regarding the ecological doom we collectively face on this planet. Marcos Terena is shown on film in Yakoana challenging the world's political representatives to hearken to the ecological wisdom of the indigenous peoples in order to reform their doomed practices. It is the story of this moment of turnabout which Anh Crutcher has attempted to capture through her documentary film. My interview with her attempts to capture the making-of-the-film story behind the story of the …

The Public And The Congress Need To Know More About Government Regulation, Murray L. Weidenbaum Apr 1999

The Public And The Congress Need To Know More About Government Regulation, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

The public and Congress both need to know more about the costs and benefits of government regulation. This testimony before the Senate Committee on Government affairs in April 1999 addresses the proposed S.59 bill, the Regulatory Right-to-Know Act of 1999, and the proposals for a Congressional Office of Regulatory Analysis. S.59 accomplishes the desirable objective of raising the level of public regulatory understanding in a straightforward and nonpartisan manner: providing consistent regulatory data. Likewise, a new Office of Regulatory Analysis would give Congress an independent source of information - provided its charter were broad enough for the task.
