Study Of The Baig Gene In Bile Acid 7Α-Dehydroxylating Bacteria, Michael David May 1999

Study Of The Baig Gene In Bile Acid 7Α-Dehydroxylating Bacteria, Michael David

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recently, intestinal bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria have been implicated in cholesterol gallstone disease. Eubacterium sp. strain V.P.I. 12708, a bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria, contains multiple bile acid inducible (bai) genes which are located on a large bai operon. Genes of this operon encode the enzymes responsible for bile acid 7α-dehydroxylation. The baiG gene encodes a bile acid transporter in Eubacterium sp. strain V.P.I. 12708. Utilizing the polymerase chain reaction I determined the presence or absence of baiG-like genes in six bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating strains: Clostridium sp. Strain TN-271, Eubacterium sp. strain 1-10, Clostridium bifermentans strain 1-55, Clostridium sordellii strain Y67, …

Contrasting Views Of Physicians And Nurses About An Inpatient Computer-Based Provider Order-Entry System, Todd W. Gress, Michael Weiner, David R. Thiemann, Mollie Jenckes, Stephanie L. Reel, Steven F. Mandell, Eric B. Bass May 1999

Contrasting Views Of Physicians And Nurses About An Inpatient Computer-Based Provider Order-Entry System, Todd W. Gress, Michael Weiner, David R. Thiemann, Mollie Jenckes, Stephanie L. Reel, Steven F. Mandell, Eric B. Bass

Internal Medicine

Objective: Many hospitals are investing in computer-based provider order-entry (POE) systems, and providers’ evaluations have proved important for the success of the systems. The authors assessed how physicians and nurses viewed the effects of one modified commercial POE system on time spent patients, resource utilization, errors with orders, and overall quality of care.

Design: Survey.

Measurements: Opinions of 271 POE users on medicine wards of an urban teaching hospital: 96 medical house officers, 49 attending physicians, 19 clinical fellows with heavy inpatient loads, and 107 nurses.

Results: Responses were received from 85 percent of the sample. Most physicians and nurses …

Estimating Total Body Fat In Sharp-Shinned And Cooper's Hawks: Techniques And Application, John P. Delong May 1999

Estimating Total Body Fat In Sharp-Shinned And Cooper's Hawks: Techniques And Application, John P. Delong

Biology

I evaluated the use of three direct methods (fat scoring, condition indices, and multiple regression of external morphological variables) and one indirect method to estimate total body fat (TBF) in Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) and Cooper's Hawks (A. cooperii). All three direct methods explained a reasonable amount of variation in actual TBF values (r2 ≥ 0.82), and all three methods required the use of four equations to account for the categories of species, age, and sex. Indirect methods are those that predict lean mass and subtract the lean mass estimate from the actual body …

Carnality In ‘El Matadero', Lee Joan Skinner May 1999

Carnality In ‘El Matadero', Lee Joan Skinner

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Esteban Echeverria's short story "El matadero" is generally acknowledged as a literary masterpiece in miniature. It is widely anthologized and has been called the inaugural work of Argentine short fiction, if not the first Latin American short story. Seymour Menton positions it as the first story in his influential anthology El cuento hispanoamericano and calls it "una verdadera obra de arte" (34); David William Foster refers to it as "the founding text of Argentine fiction" (Sexual Textualities 135). Although the story has been popularly and critically acclaimed, it also presents certain problems for its readers. Written by an avowed Romantic, …

Fisheries Management Papers

Gascoyne has seen a series of rapid developments in recreational fisheries management, starting with the introduction of state-wide bag limits in 1991; followed by area specific controls at Ningaloo in 1992; landing limits in Exmouth Gulf in 1993; strict controls on the take of pink snapper in Shark Bay’s inner gulfs in 1997; new bag limits for Shark Bay in 1998; and the introduction of a management system for the charter and aquatic tour industry in 1999. The management proposals presented for community discussion in this paper are aimed at maintaining or improving the quality and diversity of the Gascoyne's …

The Pursuit Of Happiness, Michael Traynor

Vanderbilt Law Review

Ills that beset our profession are addressed by Professor Patrick Schiltz in the alert he sounds in his lead article, On Being a Happy, Healthy, and Ethical Member of an Unhappy, Unhealthy, and Unethical Profession,' and his earlier article, Legal Ethics in Decline: The Elite Law Firm, the Elite Law School, and the Moral Foundation of the Novice Attorney. His articles call for attention and introspection by law students and others in the profession.

The editors invited me to comment because of the transitions I have experienced since graduating from law school in 1960. I agreed, not realizing the extent …

Sex Education Programs In Schools: Influence On Knowledge And Behaviors Of Teenagers, Tina Graham May 1999

Sex Education Programs In Schools: Influence On Knowledge And Behaviors Of Teenagers, Tina Graham

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Due to the teenage pregnancy rates and the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that exist in today's society, it is very important for teenagers to be informed of the facts related to pregnancy and STDs and how to prevent them from occurring. With this knowledge, they are able to make informed decisions related to their sexual experiences. The prime opportunity for such sharing of information can be in schools. The purpose of this study is to determine if sex education in school influences the knowledge and behaviors of teenagers toward sexual behavior, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. This research …

Farmhouses That Became Boarding Houses In The Catskill Mountains Of New York State, Virginia Scheer May 1999

Farmhouses That Became Boarding Houses In The Catskill Mountains Of New York State, Virginia Scheer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis the author uses oral histories to study vernacular architecture, analyzing the changes in the way people in the Catskills have used buildings, specifically farm dwellings, to make a living, first as farmers and then as proprietors of boarding houses. The Catskills region in upstate New York is well known for its dairy farms and also for its resorts, but little has been researched to trace continuities and discrepancies between the rural residents and urban visitors. Boarding on farms in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries showed continuity between the two groups: recent immigrants who lived in …

Coastal Land And Groundwater For Horticulture From Gingin To Augusta, Dennis Van Gool, Werner Runge May 1999

Coastal Land And Groundwater For Horticulture From Gingin To Augusta, Dennis Van Gool, Werner Runge

Resource management technical reports

Due to a variety of factors, including infrastructure needs, labour requirements and transport costs, horticulture is often located near major urban centres. This study focuses on the coastal plain region from Gingin to Augusta. This region accommodates over 80% of Western Australia’s population and includes the State’s major urban centres. This region accounts for over half the State’s horticultural production with a gross value of production of $244 million (adjusted ABS values, see section 1.2). Increasing population pressures and increasing demand for horticultural produce have resulted in competition for the limited land resources in this area.

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil May 1999

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Although horses have laterally-placed eyes, there is substantial binocular overlap, allowing for the possibility that these animals have stereopsis. In the first experiment of the present study we measured local stereopsis by obtaining monocular and binocular depth thresholds for renal depth stimuli. On all measures, the horses' binocular performance was superior to their monocular. When depth thresholds were obtained, binocular thresholds were several times superior to those obtained monocularly, suggesting that the animals could use stereoscopic information when it was available. The binocular thresholds averaged about 15 min arc. In the second experiment we obtained evidence for the presence of …

"Ni Chicha Ni Limonada": Depictions Of The Mulatto Woman In Cuban Tobacco Art, Feliza Medrano

Research Papers

During the mid-nineteenth century, a traveler from the United States by the name of Samuel Hazard sojourned in Cuba. His visit coincided not only with the island's tobacco and sugar booms, but also with the initial stages of the Ten Years' War (1868-1878). Hazard's published journal entitled Cuba with Pen and Pencil (1871) chronicles late colonial Cuba's urban and rural society with an honest, astute, yet relentlessly foreign eye. In addition to his descriptions of people and places, many chapters of Hazard's journal provide detailed accounts of cigar and cigarette production and consumption in Cuba. For Hazard, who would have …

Feasibility And Implementation Planning For The Pan-Am Centennial, Mcm Group International, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

Can a centennial edition of the Pan American Exposition in 2001 be used to reinvigorate the regional economy? Will a celebration of international magnitude help reposition the image of Buffalo as a vital and energetic community? Does Buffalo have the will to reclaim its past glory? The Buffalo Niagara leadership, along with grass-roots community groups fascinated with the potential of a centennial celebration to catalyze a halt to the regions decades long decline, has urged an answer to these vital questions. In the fall of 1998, a Pan American Centennial Exploratory Committee was formed to evaluate the potential impact and …
