What Money Cannot Buy: A Legislative Response To C.Rac.K., Adam B. Wolf Dec 1999

What Money Cannot Buy: A Legislative Response To C.Rac.K., Adam B. Wolf

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Children Requiring a Caring Kommunity (C.R.A.C.K.) is an organization that pays current or former drug addicts $200 to be sterilized. While generating great public controversy, C.R.A.C.K. is expanding rapidly throughout the country. Its clients are disproportionately poor women of color, who are coerced by the offer of money into permanently relinquishing their reproductive rights. This Note argues that C.R.A.C.K. is a program of eugenical sterilization that cannot be tolerated. Moreover, C.R.A.C.K. further violates settled national public policy by offensively commodifying the ill-commodifiable, by demeaning women, and by starting down a slippery slope with devastating consequences. This Note proposes legislation that …

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the etiologic agent for adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. Tax1 is a 40-kDa phosphoprotein, predominantly localized in the nucleus of the host cell, which functions to transactivate both viral and cellular promoters. It seems likely that HTLV-1, through expression of the viral regulatory protein Tax1, provides some initial alteration in cell metabolism predisposing the development of ATL. Here, we demonstrate that HTLV-1 infection in T-cell lines and patient samples causes overexpression of an early G1 cyclin, cyclin D2. The transcriptional up-regulation of the cyclin D2 gene is due …

Women And Work: An Analysis Of The Sociological And Historical Trends Of Maternity Leave Policies In The U.S., Gina M. Schrader

Honors Theses

This paper presents an analysis of maternity rights and regulations within the context of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 and the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993. First, I will define the legislation while observing the sociological and historical significance of the legislation. Second, I will analyze maternity leave policies of the modern working environment and address the increasing involvement of women within the workforce. Finally, I will examine the needs that are unmet within current policies and the possible alternatives.

Prognostic Indicators Of Childhood Acute Viral Encephalitis, E Bhutto, M Naim, M Ehtesham, M Rehman, M A. Siddique, I Jehan

Community Health Sciences

Objective: To devise a set of clinical signs and laboratory parameters that would help clinicians assess prognosis in patients and plan appropriate management. Methods: Medical records of 147 paediatric cases (with a discharge diagnosis of acute viral encephalitis) admitted over a ten year period from 1987 to 1997 were reviewed and relevant information collected on a data extraction form. Results: Of 147 patients, 24 (16.3%) died and 48 (32.7%) were left with severe neurological deficits. A GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) score between 6-10 had an association with poor outcome (OR = 2.62, Chi-square = 5.57, p-value = 0.018) and that a GCS …

The Navicular Arch Index : A Reliable And Valid Footprint Parameter To Evaluate Arch Height, Tso-Liang Wang, Rocky F. Comberiati Dec 1999

The Navicular Arch Index : A Reliable And Valid Footprint Parameter To Evaluate Arch Height, Tso-Liang Wang, Rocky F. Comberiati

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Recent studies have shown a close correlation between arch height of the foot and activity-related injuries. In the past, attempts to evaluate arch height from footprint parameters have yielded conflicting results. This could be caused by their failure to take anatomy into consideration in the proposed footprint parameters. This study investigates the relationship between arch height and Navicular Arch Index (NAI) - a new footprint parameter developed by us to incorporate anatomical consideration into footprint measurements. NAI is defined as the ratio of modified footprint width to foot width at the site corresponding to the navicular tuberosity. The arch height …

Pharmacotherapy In Acute Spinal Cord Injury, Yen-Ho Wang, Tien-Shang Huang Dec 1999

Pharmacotherapy In Acute Spinal Cord Injury, Yen-Ho Wang, Tien-Shang Huang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), a devastating event, results in huge costs to patients and society. Current management emphasizes general supportive care and stabilization of associated spinal columnar injury to prevent worsening of the cord lesions. Most of the numerous experimental studies to investigate pathophysiological changes following acute SCI suggest a two-step mechanism of damage to the spinal cord in which the primary (direct) or mechanical injury caused by trauma initiates secondary (indirect) or progressive autodestructive injury of the cord. During recent years, free oxygen radical generation and lipid peroxidation have been implicated in the secondary injury.Several pharmacological agents …

Evaluation Of The Interface Pressure Of Conventionally Used Cushions By Sci Patient At The Ischial Tuberosites, Yiu-Chung Lau, Chau-Peng Leong, Hsueh-Wen Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Spinal cord injury (SCI) patients confined to a wheelchair for long periods are prone to pressure sores occurring at ischial tuberosity. This study used Expert-Seat pressure evaluation pad to record the pressure of the ischial tuberosities. Twenty-nine spinal cord injury subjects and twenty normal subjects participated in this study. The pressure distributed over ischial tuberosities during sitting was measured five times, including one measured without cushion. Four wheelchair cushions with different types of materials were evaluated in two population groups: spinal cord injured and normal control. The subjects sat on various types of wheelchair seats: (1) gel cushion: skil care …

Recurrence Of Transverse Myelitis After Long Term Neurological Recovery Associated With Antiphospholipid Antibodies In A Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus : A Casereport, Yen-Ho Wang, Woei Tsay, Guang-Dar Yin, Kou-Mou Huang, Tien-Shang Huang Dec 1999

Recurrence Of Transverse Myelitis After Long Term Neurological Recovery Associated With Antiphospholipid Antibodies In A Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus : A Casereport, Yen-Ho Wang, Woei Tsay, Guang-Dar Yin, Kou-Mou Huang, Tien-Shang Huang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

A 44-year-old female Taiwanese developed T5 transverse myelitis (TM) in 1984, eight years before the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She responded very well to prednisolone and azathioprine administration and had complete neurological recovery. In August 1997, a relapse of TM at vicinal level, T6, occurred. Magnetic resonance image of the spinal cord revealed long segment involvement from T4 to T8. High titer of antiphospholipid antibodies and various serological markers of lupus activity were found to correlate with this relapse of TM. She responded very well to methylprednisolone pulse therapy with nearly complete neurological recovery. Follow-up examination of magnetic …

Army Professionalism, The Military Ethic, And Officership In The 21st Century, John A. Nagl Major, C. Anthony Pfaff Dr., Don M. Snider Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The authors address what they—and many others—perceived to be a decline in military professionalism in the Army officer corps. The authors first describe the ethical, technical, and political components of military professionalism and then address the causes for the decline. They conclude by proposing a set of principles which, if adhered to, will reinvigorate the vision of the officer corps and motivate the corps to selfless service.

Stress At A Juvenile Detention Center: Identifying Stressors And Examining The Coping Process, Matthew J. Schmid Dec 1999

Stress At A Juvenile Detention Center: Identifying Stressors And Examining The Coping Process, Matthew J. Schmid

Masters Theses

In the examination of the literature dealing with stress as it relates to corrections, normally "juvenile corrections workers are not considered, due to the dearth of stress-related research" (Huckabbe, 1992, p. 479). This thesis is a qualitative project designed to analyze detention workers' views on stress. I was interested in finding out the following two things: (1) the workers' identification of the major stressors in their job, and (2) the ways the workers coped with the stressors identified.

Structured interviews were conducted with one third (12) of the detention staff that worked at a forty bed juvenile detention center in …
