Cavefish Population Status And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas - Final Report Submitted To Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, G. O. Graening, Arthur V. Brown Aug 1999

Cavefish Population Status And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas - Final Report Submitted To Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, G. O. Graening, Arthur V. Brown

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

This report summarizes the continuing effort to monitor environmental quality in the Cave Springs Cave Natural Area and to implement the Ozark Cavefish Recovery Plan. Last year’s report (Brown et al., 1998) identified certain environmental stressors, including a trend over 15 years of increasing nutrient pollution, a low cavefish population count of only 106, and the presence of heavy metals in the cave water and one semi-volatile organic compound (the phthalate DEHP at 500 ppb) in resident crayfish tissue. This year’s monitoring effort demonstrates that fecal coliforms continue to exceed Arkansas State Water Quality Standards (Regulation 2), sometimes by a …

Neural Network Approach To Speech Pathology, Antonio P. Salvatore, Nicole A. Thorne, Charlotte M. Gross

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A speech problem can be caused by different reasons, from psychological to organic. The existing diagnostic of speech pathologies relies on skilled doctors who can often diagnose by simply listening to the patient. We show that neural networks can simulate this ability and thus provide an automated (preliminary) diagnosis.

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Ophthalmia Dam On The Floodplains Of The Fortescue River On Ethel Creek And Roy Hill Stations, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell Aug 1999

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Ophthalmia Dam On The Floodplains Of The Fortescue River On Ethel Creek And Roy Hill Stations, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell

Resource management technical reports

The area surveyed covered all of the floodplains of the Fortescue River, and Jigalong, Jimblebar and Carramulla Creeks which fall within Ethel Creek and Roy Hill stations. Two serious, distinct and largely unrelated environmental problems are evident on the area surveyed. The first problem is longstanding, severe landscape degradation in the form of almost complete loss of perennial vegetative cover and soil erosion (mainly scalding) due to historical overgrazing.

Comparison Of An Advanced Mercury Analyzer With The Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Technique For The Determination Of Mercury In Coal, Dong Li Aug 1999

Comparison Of An Advanced Mercury Analyzer With The Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Technique For The Determination Of Mercury In Coal, Dong Li

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

For over 30 years the industry standard method for mercury analysis has been the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometric technique (CVAAS). Recent developments in improving this technique have focused on procedures for concentrating mercury in the analyte or materials to improve detection. The LECO Corporation produces an Advanced Mercury Analyzer, the AMA-254, for analysis of the solid and liquid samples. The system allows for the thermal heating of the sample to decompose the sample and release mercury, which is concentrated in a gold amalgam. Thermal desorption of the mercury from the amalgam is detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy. A comparison …

The Effects Of Phosphorus Enrichment On The Dominant Phytoplankton Communities Of Chaney Lake, Kathy Tehrani Aug 1999

The Effects Of Phosphorus Enrichment On The Dominant Phytoplankton Communities Of Chaney Lake, Kathy Tehrani

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Chaney Lake is a temporary karst wetland located in southern Warren County, Kentucky. Because of an impermeable chert layer between the surface and the porous limestone, Chaney Lake fills with water over the winter and spring and then gradually drains over the summer. Three experiments were conducted over the course of the 1998 flooding season to assess the effects of phosphorus addition on the phytoplankton community in Chaney Lake. Ten plastic-sided mesocosms were constructed and placed in the marsh area of the wetland at three different periods: early spring, early summer, and late summer. Phosphorus in the form of K2HPO4 …

Attitudes Concerning Euthanasia Among Protestant Denominations, Greg Morgan Aug 1999

Attitudes Concerning Euthanasia Among Protestant Denominations, Greg Morgan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this research was to uncover differences in attitudes among Protestant denominations concerning euthanasia. Variations in attitudes were viewed using social theories of religion by Emile Dukheim, Max Weber, Charles Glock, and Rodney Stark. These theories were used to establish a basis for variation among the Protestant denominations on social issues. A questionnaire was given to four Protestant Churches in a mid-sized city in Kentucky during the Spring of 1999. The sample of 134 respondents represented six different Protestant denominations. Logistic regression and factor analysis were used to analyze the data. Results suggest that pro-euthanasia attitudes are positively …

Identification Of Needs In Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Luann Massey Aug 1999

Identification Of Needs In Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Luann Massey

MSN Research Projects

Breast cancer has been documented as the second leading cause of death in American women. Many needs are realized during the phases of treatment for breast cancer: at the time of diagnosis, during treatment, and after treatment. The purpose of this descriptive exploratory study was to identify the needs of women with breast cancer during phases of treatment. With the Neuman Systems Model as a theoretical framework, the research question was as follows : What are the needs of women with breast cancer during the phases of treatment? Data were obtained using the Massey Subject Profile and the Massey Questionnaire. …

Care And Nutrition: Concepts And Measurement, Patrice L. Engle, Purnima Menon Aug 1999

Care And Nutrition: Concepts And Measurement, Patrice L. Engle, Purnima Menon

Psychology and Child Development

Care is the provision in the household and the community of time, attention, and support to meet the physical, mental, and social needs of the growing child and other household members. The significance of care has best been articulated in the framework developed by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). This paper extends the UNICEF model of care and summarizes the literature on the relationship of care practices and resources to child nutrition. The paper also summarizes attempts to measure the various dimensions of care. The concept of care is extended in two directions: first, we define resources needed by …

Health Behavior, Quality Of Work Life, And Organizational Effectiveness In The Lumber Industry, Stewart I. Donaldson, Steve Sussman, Clyde W. Dent, Herbert H. Severson, Jacqueline L. Stoddard Aug 1999

Health Behavior, Quality Of Work Life, And Organizational Effectiveness In The Lumber Industry, Stewart I. Donaldson, Steve Sussman, Clyde W. Dent, Herbert H. Severson, Jacqueline L. Stoddard

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

A major incentive for work-site health promotion activities has been the promise of increased company profitability. Some critics have challenged the economic argument based on distal outcomes such as increased employee longevity and less morbidity later in life. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between employee health behavior, quality of work life, and proximal organizationally valued outcomes. Data were collected from a stratified random sample of employees working at Pacific Lumber Company (N = 146), the largest single-site lumber mill in California. Although employee sleep patterns predicted health care utilization and psychological well-being, for the …
