An Examination Of Two Of New York State's Brownfields Remediation Initiatives: Title V Of The 1996 Bond Act And The Voluntary Remediation Program, Glen M. Vogel

Pace Environmental Law Review

Over the past two decades, the advent of federal and state environmental laws and the accompanying fear of liability for clean-up has led to a reluctance on the part of developers to purchase former industrial or commercial sites. These abandoned sites in which redevelopment is complicated by fear of contamination are known as brownfields. This article explores the utility of Title V of the New York State Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act of 1996 and the State Voluntary Clean-up Program in creating incentive for developers to remediate these sites in New York State. This incentive gives developers a reason to …

Manufacturing Strategy And New Venture Performance: A Comparison Of Independent And Corporate Ventures In The Biotechnology Industry, Shaker A. Zahra, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Little empirical research has compared the manufacturing strategies of corporate and independent new ventures. This study explores these differences with data from the young, science-based biotechnology industry, and examines the performance effects of manufacturing strategy variables including scope, competitive thrust, and capabilities. The results show that the corporate and independent biotechnology new ventures pursue significantly different manufacturing strategies, and that different dimensions of manufacturing strategies affect the performance of corporate vs. independent ventures quite differently.

Comparison Of The Effects Of Eight-Hour And Twelve-Hour Shifts On Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Production Levels, David P. Collette

Theses and Dissertations

his is a follow-on study that examined the effects of converting a large aircraft maintenance squadron from 8-hour shifts to 12-hour shifts. The squadron studied converted its 24-hour maintenance work force from three 8-hour work shifts to two 12-hour work shifts. Data was collected from four different time periods. Three time periods were used for a primary analysis and all four time periods were used for trend analysis. To determine if the 12-hour work shift was effective, workforce productivity was measured during the different work shift periods. Results showed an increase in two productivity measurements, no-change in two productivity measurements, …

Prediction Of Motor Recovery Following A Stroke Using Motor Evoked Potential, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Ai-Ling Hu, Mei-Yun Liaw, May-Kuen Wong Sep 1999

Prediction Of Motor Recovery Following A Stroke Using Motor Evoked Potential, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Ai-Ling Hu, Mei-Yun Liaw, May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Electromagnetic stimulation of the motor cortex to produce motor evoked potentials (MEP) recorded from the surface electromyogram in skeletal muscleis a painless, safe and non-invasive means of evaluating the descending motor pathway function in humans.Seventy nine ischemic stroke patients with hemiplegia or hemiparesis participated as the control group(in this study. Electromagnetic stimulation was performed to identify the correlation between MEP findings and clinical motor functional status as well as findings of CT scans. In addition, the motor status of the hemiplegic limb was evaluated by using Brunnstrom staging and the functional status of the stroke patient was evaluated by using …

Rehabilitation Cost Of Long Term Care System - Analysis Of Stroke Patients Sampled From A General Hospital, Huey-Jen Lai, Horng-Jeng Shyn Sep 1999

Rehabilitation Cost Of Long Term Care System - Analysis Of Stroke Patients Sampled From A General Hospital, Huey-Jen Lai, Horng-Jeng Shyn

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Following implementation of the national health insurance system in Taiwan, only home health care is covered by insurance for long-term-care, possibly owing to the lack of financial coverage.Since Japan's economy reached full maturity in 1963, social benefits, including free health care, have been provided. This subsequently led to abuses of health care resources, cost expansion and acute beds occupied by chronic patients, thus straining governmental finances severely. This situation has been alleviated by providing general health care, elevating the deductable amount, constructing less expensive health facilities for the elderly, and performing home health care, day care and home nursing so …

Dermatomyositis Associated With Dysphagia :A Casereport And Literatures Review, Keng-Yu Chao, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Dysphagia frequently occurs in patients inflicted with dermatomyositis. Dysphagia in dermatomyositis patients is occasionally overlooked and misdiagnosed since it is not a major clinical manifestation. This article presented on a 31 years old woman inflicted with dermatomyositis. Dysphagia developed during her hospitalization, as evidenced by her difficulty in swallowing solid food and choking with nasal regurgitation while taking liquids. Psychogenic dysphagia was diagnosed simply owing to the lack of positive findings of esophagogram. The patient subsequently visited OPD of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. Although videofluoroscopic examination of swallowing study in our department revealed only mild oral stasis without aspiration, …

Lateral Medullary Syndrome And Brachial Plexopathyin Heroin Addiction:A Casereport, Hong-Li Lee, Shih-Jei Tsai, Lu-Ing Bih, Wu-Chung Shen, Yaw-Zen Chen, I-Fu Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

As a serious social problem, heroin abuse may induce toxic encephalopathy, cerebrovascular accident, or peripheral neuropathy. This article describe a 40 year old male diagnosed as lateral medullary syndrome ( Wallenberg syndrome), possibly resulted from heroin abuse. Possible causes for his symptoms are ischemic stroke and toxic demyelination. This patient also suffered from brachial plexopathy of left side. This malady may be attributed to nerve inflammation reaction from heroin and adulterants. This article also discussed heroin-related neurological disorders. Results presented herein provide a valuable reference for clinical diagnosis and management.

Effects Of Selective Posterior Rhizotomy On Motor Control And Gait In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Alice May-Kuen Wong, Chia-Ling Chen, Tai-Ngar Lui, Fuk-Tan Tang, Wei-Hsien Hong, Shih-Wei Chou Sep 1999

Effects Of Selective Posterior Rhizotomy On Motor Control And Gait In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Alice May-Kuen Wong, Chia-Ling Chen, Tai-Ngar Lui, Fuk-Tan Tang, Wei-Hsien Hong, Shih-Wei Chou

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This study evaluates how selective posterior rhizotomy (SPR) affects the motor control pattern of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) by using polyelectromyography and gait performance. Twenty-four spastic children diagnosed with CP aged 3 to 16 years old were included in this study. Another twenty children diagnosed with CP who had only undergone rehabilitation were selected as the control group. The children diagnosed with CP received polyelectromyography and gait analysis within one month before treatment (SPR or only rehabilitation) and 9 months to 1 year after treatment. Gait analysis included gait patterns and kinematic parameters. The gait pattems were scored …

Reliability Study And Features Of Falling Tendency When Standing In Unilateral Hemispheric Stroke Patients, Ling-Fu Meng, Shi-Dong Jush, Mei-Hsiang Chen Sep 1999

Reliability Study And Features Of Falling Tendency When Standing In Unilateral Hemispheric Stroke Patients, Ling-Fu Meng, Shi-Dong Jush, Mei-Hsiang Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

”Astasia(inability to stand)” is a popular and immediate result after onset from stroke. Health professionals usually label astasia as ”poor” standing performance. However, few studies substantiate the falling tendency of astasia. The result of inability to stand is to fall toward one specific direction; therefore, this study used ”falling direction” as a medium to analyze the falling tendency of astasia. Three major results were found in this study. Firstly, the measurement used in this study to judge falling direction demonstrated good inter-rater reliability. Two raters' kappa value was .89, .88, .87 respectively(each p value < .001). Secondly, while comparing 5 …

Examination Of Ionic Liquids And Their Interaction With Molecules, When Used As Stationary Phases In Gas Chromatography, Daniel W. Armstrong, Lingfeng He, Yan Song Liu Sep 1999

Examination Of Ionic Liquids And Their Interaction With Molecules, When Used As Stationary Phases In Gas Chromatography, Daniel W. Armstrong, Lingfeng He, Yan Song Liu

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stable room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been used as novel reaction solvents. They can solubilize complex polar molecules such as cyclodextrins and glycopeptides. Their wetting ability and viscosity allow them to be coated onto fused silica capillaries. Thus, 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate and the analogous chloride salt can be used as stationary phases for gas chromatography (GC). Using inverse GC, one can examine the nature of these ionic liquids via their interactions with a variety of compounds. The Rohrschneider-McReynolds constants were determined for both ionic liquids and a popular commercial polysiloxane stationary phase. Ionic liquid stationary phases seem to have a …
