Prevalence And Patterns Of Major Depressive Disorder In The United States Labor Force, Virginia Wilcox-Gök, Dave E. Marcotte, D. Patrick Redmon Sep 1999

Prevalence And Patterns Of Major Depressive Disorder In The United States Labor Force, Virginia Wilcox-Gök, Dave E. Marcotte, D. Patrick Redmon

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Background and Aims of the Study: In this paper, we identify the 12-month and lifetime prevalence of major depressive disorder in and out of the labor force, and among the employed and unemployed. We examine whether prevalence by labor force and employment status varies by gender and over the life cycle. Finally, we examine whether people can ‘recover’ from depression with time by identifying patterns of labor force participation and employment as time since most recent episode passes. Methods: We examine data collected as part of the National Comorbidity Survey, a survey representative of the population of the United States …

The Capital Market And Equity Failure In Nigeria, Rose Mbatomon Ako

Economic and Financial Review

The capital Markel is recognized in the literature as an important barometer for economic growth and development in a nation via its allocative efficiency properties. In investigating equity failure in Nigeria, the paper applied the predictive models developed for discriminant and logistic analyses for selecting equity stocks lo invest in. In the study relating to a sample of 47 Equity Issues from 45 Nigerian companies over the period 1988-92, two classificalion models were applied on a data set comprising macro and micro economic indicators, an industry variable and various accounting ratios. The Impact Of Acquisition Reform And Political-Fiscal Variables On Air Force Gao-Protests Processed, Raymond M. Barben Sep 1999

The Impact Of Acquisition Reform And Political-Fiscal Variables On Air Force Gao-Protests Processed, Raymond M. Barben

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine whether the Air Force contract protest frequency rises or falls with reforms in the acquisition process, number of AF Contract Actions, number of AF Contract Dollars, AF-GAO Sustain Rate, and/or General Economic Conditions (represented by the U.S. unemployment rate). Specific management questions address the effectiveness of acquisition reform initiatives, a comparison to other external factors, and the identification of AF-GAO Protest trends between 1984 and 1998. The research problem was explored with a thorough literature review and formulation of a multiple regression model. The research identified the need to evaluate the impact …

Operational Risk Management And Military Aviation Safety, Park D. Ashley Sep 1999

Operational Risk Management And Military Aviation Safety, Park D. Ashley

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force Class A aviation mishap rate has hovered around 1.5 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours since 1985. Recent attention on Air Force accidents has caused the leadership to seek to reduce its mishap rate. The Army's Class A aviation mishap rate declined after it implemented risk management (RM) principles in 1987. This reduction caught the attention of Air Force leadership who have since stated that the application of operational risk management (ORM) is how the Air Force will reduce, even eliminate, mishaps. With current budget constraints, ORM is considered to be the most cost-effective way the Air Force …

Workplace Violence: Exploring The Dangers For Air Force Leadership, Shawn R. Jones Sep 1999

Workplace Violence: Exploring The Dangers For Air Force Leadership, Shawn R. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

The repeated occurrences of workplace violence throughout society today require the Air Force to evaluate its own workplaces and determine if a threat exists. This research explored violence in the workplace and established the possibility that workplace violence can affect the Air Force. Additionally, Air Force Climate Assessment Surveys were evaluated to find information that could be useful in detecting early warning signs of potential workplace violence. A number of examples of violence that occurred within Air Force workplaces highlighted the threat for Air Force leadership. With over 1,680 incidents of workplace violence reported to the AFOSI in a 5-year …

A Methodology For The Analysis And Prediction Of Air Force Enlisted Aircraft Maintenance Personnel Retention Rates Using Economic Statistics, Peter D. Lommen Sep 1999

A Methodology For The Analysis And Prediction Of Air Force Enlisted Aircraft Maintenance Personnel Retention Rates Using Economic Statistics, Peter D. Lommen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of certain national economic indicators on enlisted aircraft maintenance personnel retention rates. To fulfill this purpose, this study builds a linear regression equation that can predict the retention rate using the civilian unemployment rate and the index of 11 leading economic indicators as the independent variables. Journal literature and economic texts were reviewed to identify the indicators as good predictors for changes in employee turnover. The method of linear regression was used to build the model needed to predict the changes in the retention rate. The equation developed with this …

Spectrum Of Hodgkin's Disease In Children And Adults: Impact Of Combined Morphologic And Phenotypic Approach For Exclusion Of Look-Alikes, Tanya Siddiqui, Shahid Pervez

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective:

To determine the prevalence of Hodgkin’s disease (HD) and its various subtypes in children and adults and assess the use of immunohistochemical (IHC) studies in confirming HD cases and excluding its close mimicries/look-alikes.

Material and Methods:

All 265 Hodgkin’s disease cases diagnosed at The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi over the last 6 years (July 1991 - July 1997) were included. Of these 219 were diagnosed on routine H&E examination while in the remaining 46 cases, diagnosis was made after a thorough IHC workup. (This group initially included 161 cases labelled as lymphoproliferative disorder with HD as one of …

Behavioral Analysis And Enrichment Effects On Captive Red Wolves, Laurie Thompson Sep 1999

Behavioral Analysis And Enrichment Effects On Captive Red Wolves, Laurie Thompson

Honors Theses

The red wolf, Canis rufus, is a highly endangered predator native to the eastern United States. Their original range is thought to have extended from as far west as Texas all the way to the east coast, and as far south as Florida and north to at least the Ohio River valley. Their decline is attributed to human encroachment causing loss of habitat, persecution of the species, and extensive hybridization with coyotes, Canis latrans, once their numbers began to diminish (Riley and McBride, 1972). In addition to these problems, parasites have had a substantial effect on their already dwindling numbers …

An Analysis On The Effects Of Social Context In The Display Of Anger In Children, Angie Vanmeter Sep 1999

An Analysis On The Effects Of Social Context In The Display Of Anger In Children, Angie Vanmeter

Theses

The purpose of t his research is to determine if social context influences a child's decision to regulate their anger. The subjects used in this study were 20 first, third and sixth grade students totaling sixty children. The categories of social context are as follows: parent, peer and alone. The subjects completed a demographic survey, as well as an aggression questionnaire, designed by the researcher. The results confirmed previous research with regard to the influence social acceptance has over children's actions. This research indicates peers, as being the most influential category in determining a child's response to anger.

Objective: As blockade of CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) has been proposed as therapy for HIV-1, we examined whether the CCR5-Δ32/Δ32 homozygous genotype has phenotypic expressions other than those related to HIV-1.

Design: Study subjects were white homosexual men or men with hemophilia who were not infected with HIV-1. In this study, 15 CCR5-Δ32/Δ32 homozygotes were compared with 201 CCR5 wild-type (+/+) subjects for a wide range of clinical conditions and laboratory assay results ascertained during prospective cohort studies and routine clinical care. CCR5-Δ32 genotype was determined by polymerase chain reaction, followed by single-stranded conformational polymorphism analysis.
