Cartilage Regeneration On A Large Articular Surface Facilitated By Stress Shielding, Charles L. Mcdowell, Jennifer S. Wayne, Robert Tuten, Hunter H. Mcguire Jr. Oct 1999

Cartilage Regeneration On A Large Articular Surface Facilitated By Stress Shielding, Charles L. Mcdowell, Jennifer S. Wayne, Robert Tuten, Hunter H. Mcguire Jr.

Virginia Journal of Science

An animal model for the study of articular cartilage regeneration in-vivo facilitated by stress-shielding is introduced. The object of the model is to test the hypothesis that some form of cartilaginous tissue will grow upon a large joint surface in vivo with the joint in normal motion. The model utilizes the known capability of immature cells to differentiate. The source of cells is bleeding subchondral bone. In addition, the model provides a mechanically shielded environment in which cell differentiation and maturation can occur. The study showed that a substantial amount of tissue will grow in the animal model only when …

Guidelines For Local Calserve Evaluation Reports, California Department Of Education

Evaluation/Reflection

The 1999-2000 Guidelines for CalServe Evaluation Reports are based on the local evaluation process that was initiated in the winter of 1998. The general purpose of the guidelines is to assist each partnership in the writing of its evaluation report. The overarching questions and the content of this year's guidelines are much the same as last year's, as are the mechanisms by which each partnerships to submit information about the outcomes of service-learning for students, teachers, school.school districts, and the community.

Evaluation/Reflection

Recent advances in understanding the human brain, intelligence, and how we learn1 indicate that successful schools need to provide
• rich, safe learning environments that address multiple realms of intelligence;
• opportunities for experiential learning to promote construction of knowledge and understanding;
• opportunities to develop both intelligence and skills through mediated learning;
• opportunities to transfer learning through reflection; and
• balanced assessment measures that include portfolios and performance assessments as well as more conventional standardized tests.

Citizen Suits Under The Resource Conservation And Recovery Act: Plotting Abstention On A Map Of Federalism, Charlotte Gibson Oct 1999

Citizen Suits Under The Resource Conservation And Recovery Act: Plotting Abstention On A Map Of Federalism, Charlotte Gibson

Michigan Law Review

In the shadow of the Supreme Court's constitutional federalism doctrines, lower federal courts have developed doctrines of common law federalism through vehicles such as abstention. In the environmental law arena, courts have employed a number of abstention theories to dismiss citizen suits brought under federal statutes. The appearance of primary jurisdiction and Burford abstention in citizen suits brought under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act ("RCRA") exemplifies this trend. In rejecting RCRA suits, some courts have relied on primary jurisdiction, a doctrine conceived as a mechanism to allocate responsibility for limited fact-finding between courts and agencies, to dismiss RCRA citizen …

Immune Responses Induced By Gene Gun Or Intramuscular Injection Of Dna Vaccines That Express Immunogenic Regions Of The Serine Repeat Antigen From Plasmodium Falciparum, Alexia A. Belperron, David Feltquate, Barbara A. Fox, Toshihiro Horii, David J. Bzik Oct 1999

Bzik

Dartmouth Scholarship

The liver- and blood-stage-expressed serine repeat antigen (SERA) of Plasmodium falciparum is a candidate protein for a human malaria vaccine. We compared the immune responses induced in mice immunized with SERA-expressing plasmid DNA vaccines delivered by intramuscular (i.m.) injection or delivered intradermally by Gene Gun immunization. Mice were immunized with a pcdna3 plasmid encoding the entire 47-kDa domain of SERA (amino acids 17 to 382) or the N-terminal domain (amino acids 17 to 110) of SERA. Minimal antibody responses were detected following DNA vaccination with the N-terminal domain of SERA, suggesting that the N-terminal domain alone is not highly immunogenic …

Extradition From Israel: The Samuel Sheinbein Case, Dina Maslow Oct 1999

Extradition From Israel: The Samuel Sheinbein Case, Dina Maslow

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the legal complexities surrounding the extradition case of Samuel Sheinbein, a dual citizen of Israel and the United States, who fled to Israel after being implicated in a murder in Maryland. The case highlights tensions between Israel's citizenship laws, which prohibit the extradition of its citizens, and international extradition norms. The Israeli Supreme Court ultimately ruled that Sheinbein could not be extradited due to his Israeli citizenship, prompting efforts to revise the extradition agreement between Israel and the United States to prevent similar outcomes in the future. The case underscores the challenges of balancing national sovereignty with …

Evaluation Of The Enantiomeric Composition Of Amino Acids In Tobacco, John P. Kullman, Xianghong Chen, Daniel W. Armstrong Oct 1999

Evaluation Of The Enantiomeric Composition Of Amino Acids In Tobacco, John P. Kullman, Xianghong Chen, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite the fact that several studies have reported the concentrations of various free amino acids in tobacco, their enantiomeric composition is unknown. Both the absolute and enantiomeric compositions of proline, alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, valine, methionine, leucine, and phenylalanine were determined for three strains of tobacco leaf, three types of smokeless tobacco, and six different blended filtered and nonfiltered reference cigarettes. Some of the highest levels of D-amino acids ever found in agricultural products were observed. Possible mechanisms for the production of these D-amino acids are considered. The relevance of D-amino acids in tobacco is discussed.

Female Genital Mutilation: Marked By Tradition, Isabel Coello Oct 1999

Female Genital Mutilation: Marked By Tradition, Isabel Coello

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the pervasive issue of female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice deeply rooted in cultural and religious traditions, which perpetuates gender-based violence and discrimination. It highlights the failure of many governments to effectively implement international human rights treaties to eradicate FGM, despite its severe physical and psychological consequences. The analysis focuses on legal challenges, recent court cases in Spain and France, and the growing recognition of FGM as grounds for political asylum, emphasizing the need for stronger international and domestic policies to protect women's rights.

Buying For The Cold War: Influences On Air Force Procurement, 1945-1956, William Cline Oct 1999

Buying For The Cold War: Influences On Air Force Procurement, 1945-1956, William Cline

History Theses & Dissertations

Military planning and buying changed dramatically after World War II as more attention and resources were applied toward the development of a strategy that made air power the center of strategic thinking. Nevertheless, when by 1947, aircraft production dropped so low as to threaten the viability of the aircraft industry, President Truman formed the President's Air Policy Commission, which spawned a cooperative effort between government and industry.

The relationship between government officials, particularly in the military, and industry executives became so close in the next decade that the health of the aircraft industry became linked with that of the military. …

Neurobehavioral And Neuromotor Long-Term Sequelae Of Prenatal Exposure To Cocaine And Other Drugs: An Unresolved Issue, Yvette Blanchard Oct 1999

Neurobehavioral And Neuromotor Long-Term Sequelae Of Prenatal Exposure To Cocaine And Other Drugs: An Unresolved Issue, Yvette Blanchard

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

When the cocaine epidemic began, predictions were made that the children of cocaine users would demonstrate devastating negative developmental sequelae. In infants and young children prenatally exposed to cocaine most frequently the neurobehavioral and neuromotor systems have been studied. Although clinically described as irritable, difficult to console, and jittery as infants, research findings have not been able to clearly describe a pattern of long-term developmental sequelae. The mechanisms of action of drug exposure on developmental outcome have shown to be more complex than originally suspected. Many factors, other than the drug use, can influence developmental outcome. In most studies of …

Perceived Influence Of Selected Factors On Decision Of High School 4-H Youth To Volunteer, Kenneth Spoto Oct 1999

Perceived Influence Of Selected Factors On Decision Of High School 4-H Youth To Volunteer, Kenneth Spoto

Journal of Extension

The author observes that volunteerism has never been strong in the parish 4-H program with which he works. A study was designed to identify factors influencing teens to volunteer. Findings from the study parallel findings from a 1996 survey, conducted for the Independent Sector, that sheds some light on the volunteering behavior of American teenagers. Recommendations include incorporating factors identified in the local and national studies in a plan that will motivate youth to volunteer and to volunteer in a continuing manner. Further research in teen volunteerism should identify additional factors influencing youth to volunteer.

4-H Projects: Is Completion Important?, Jean M. Woloshuk, Guendoline Brown, Gena D. Wagaman

Journal of Extension

There are, by policy, no standards or requirements for 4-H membership that compels an individual to complete a project. This baseline study gained information on project completion of two project areas in 1996-1997 in West Virginia: 4-H animal science and food preparation. Data were collected and analyzed from reviews of 7,569 project enrollment forms from 45 projects. The overall completion rate was 67.3%. Results of this study provide direction for defining project completion and its importance in providing a viable educational program for 4-H youth. Further inquiry into factors affecting completion of 4-H projects needs to be made. Completion rate …
