Differential Transcription Of The Tcpph Operon Confers Biotype-Specific Control Of The Vibrio Cholerae Toxr Virulence Regulon, Yvette M. Murley, Patricia A. Carroll, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor, Stephen B. Calderwood Oct 1999

Differential Transcription Of The Tcpph Operon Confers Biotype-Specific Control Of The Vibrio Cholerae Toxr Virulence Regulon, Yvette M. Murley, Patricia A. Carroll, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor, Stephen B. Calderwood

Dartmouth Scholarship

Epidemic strains of Vibrio cholerae O1 are divided into two biotypes, classical and El Tor. In both biotypes, regulation of virulence gene expression depends on a cascade in which ToxR activates expression of ToxT, and ToxT activates expression of cholera toxin and other virulence genes. In the classical biotype, maximal expression of this ToxR regulon in vitro occurs at 30 degrees C at pH 6.5 (ToxR-inducing conditions), whereas in the El Tor biotype, production of these virulence genes only occurs under very limited conditions and not in response to temperature and pH; this difference between biotypes is mediated at the …

Traditional Birth Attendants In Modern Ghana A Discussion Of Maternal Health Care, Emily Kennedy Oct 1999

Traditional Birth Attendants In Modern Ghana A Discussion Of Maternal Health Care, Emily Kennedy

African Diaspora ISPs

Ghanaian women have been delivering their own babies for almost two thousand years now, using knowledge passed down from their elders and medicines prepared from herbs. It has only been in the past one hundred years that scientific medicines and institutions have been introduced to this country, yet more and more individuals are turning to these doctors and hospitals for care before, during and after pregnancies. The role of traditional birth attendants, (TBAs), has begun to be questioned as well as attacked for its more religious and holistic approach which is resulting in a growing schism between the TBAs and …

The Problem With "All For One And One For All" Expectations: Differential Effects Of Race And Commitment In The Workplace, James R. Jones Oct 1999

The Problem With "All For One And One For All" Expectations: Differential Effects Of Race And Commitment In The Workplace, James R. Jones

Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

“The examples cited here reinforce the need for theoreticians and practitioners alike to consider the difficulties that may arise from viewing people through a single lens.” As far back as 1968, with the findings of the Kerner Commission, there have been reports of "two Americans, separate and unequal." Indeed, the recent commission on race formed by President Clinton reached much the same conclusion. While three decades separate the work of two groups, the main inference drawn is strikingly consistent with regard to race. There is a persistent chasm in how majority group and minority group members view and are viewed …

Reimbursement For Pharmaceutical Care Services: The California Experience, Jeffery A. Goad, Kathleen Johnson, Michael Rudolph

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

"While it is true that pharmacists are changing their practice habits, they are doing so for the betterment of their patients’ drug therapy outcomes and the healthcare system. The pharmacist serves as the vital link between the patient, physician, and healthcare system. By working with patients and physicians, pharmacists have demonstrated in the literature that they can improve patient drug therapy outcomes, thus preventing unnecessary healthcare expenditures (Fincham, 1998). Pharmacists have long been held in highest esteem by patients, being voted the number one trusted professional for 10 consecutive years. The evidence is clear that pharmacists provide a valuable service …

States Of Emergency - Moderating Their Effects On Human Rights, Venkat Iyer

Dalhousie Law Journal

There has been a runaway proliferation of emergency regimes worldwide in recent decades. This, coupled with the high incidence of human rights abuses which accompany them, has made states of emergency a matter of increasing concern among human rights policymakers and monitors. The author evaluates the various measures that have been taken by the international community to moderate the effects of emergencies, and outlines possible future strategies to increase the effectiveness of such measures.

Extension's Role With Farmers' Markets: Working With Farmers, Consumers, And Communities, Jennifer Abel, Joan Thomson, Audrey Maretzki

Journal of Extension

Farmers' markets are popular outlets for fresh food in many communities. Consumers choose to shop at these markets for a number of reasons, including freshness, appearance, and taste of produce, as well as enjoying the atmosphere of such a market. In addition to these benefits to consumers, farmers' markets serve the vendors who sell at them and the communities in which they are located in economic, educational, and social ways. This article examines the multiple benefits of farmers' markets and suggests ways that Extension can continue to take an active role in furthering their growth and development.

Infochemicals In Mosquito Host Selection: Human Skin Microflora And Plasmodium Parasites, Marieta A.H. Braks, Robert A. Anderson, Bart G.J. Knols

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The interaction between the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and its human host has traditionally been viewed within a bitrophic context, considering only the human and the mosquito. Recently, the influence of the Plasmodium parasite on the interaction has been recognized, because it affects the physiology and/or behaviour of humans and mosquitoes. However, studies on odour-mediated host-seeking behaviour of An. gambiae and other Diptera have provided evidence that a fourth group of organisms should be taken into consideration. Human skin microflora play a role in the production of odorous compounds that might function as kairomones for mosquitoes. Here, Marieta Braks, …
