Four Clinical Tests Of Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: The Association Of Test Results With Innominate Torsion Among Patients With And Without Low Back Pain, Pamela Levangie

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Background and Purpose. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between innominate torsion (asymmetric anteroposterior positioning of the pelvic innominates) and the Gillet, standing forward flexion, sitting forward flexion, and supine-to-sit tests. Subjects. A sample of 21- to 50-year-old patients with low back pain (n=150) and a comparison group of patients with upper-extremity impairments (n=138) were recruited from outpatient physical therapy facilities. Methods. The association of single and combined test results with innominate torsion (calculated from pelvic landmark data) and with presence or absence of low back pain were estimated via odds ratios, sensitivities, specificities, and predictive …

Book Review: Nachkommen. Auswanderer Aus Klosters Und Davos Nach Amerika Im 19 Jahrhundert, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

To do justice to this work is less than easy, yet is certainly a labor of love. Diverse materials in Swiss archives and others unearthed in the United States form the documentary core of this book. Its rich primary sources deal not only with the world of destination, that is several regions in North America such as the Midwest, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest, but also with the world of origin, especially Klosters and Davos. The author is intimately acquainted with that mountainous area of Switzerland's Canton Graubtinden and she also familiarized herself by extensive travels with the American world. …

Slow-Binding Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Peptide Thiols: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Characterization, Kristi M. Huntington, David L. Bienvenue, Yaoming Wei, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz, Dehua Pei Nov 1999

Slow-Binding Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Peptide Thiols: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Characterization, Kristi M. Huntington, David L. Bienvenue, Yaoming Wei, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz, Dehua Pei

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Peptide-derived thiols of the general structure N-mercaptoacyl-leucyl-p-nitroanilide (1a−c) were synthesized and found to be potent, slow-binding inhibitors of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). The overall potencies (KI*) of these inhibitors against AAP range from 2.5 to 57 nM exceeding that of the natural product bestatin and approaching that of amastatin. The corresponding alcohols (2a−b) are simple competitive inhibitors of much lower potencies (KI = 23 and 360 μM). These data suggest that the free thiols are involved in the formation of the E·I …

Ethnic Variability In The Treatment Of Pain, Rafael A. Ortega, Benjamin A. Youdelman, Richard C. Havel Nov 1999

Ethnic Variability In The Treatment Of Pain, Rafael A. Ortega, Benjamin A. Youdelman, Richard C. Havel

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Ethnicity has been shown to be an important determinant of behavior during illness, particularly when a painful condition is present. Studies have shown that pain may be undertreated among different ethnic groups of patients. Whereas individual variations in the reaction to pain occur, available data do not support racial and/or ethnic differences in the perception of pain, leaving no justification for this discrepancy in treatment. Regardless of ethnicity, inadequate treatment of pain has been known for some time and has been referred to in recent literature as "oligoanalgesia." Lack of understanding of different ethnic and cultural groups can lead to …

Quantitation Of Yohimbine Utilizing Capillary Electrophoresis. Method Development Through Statistical Design., Jonathan Cooper Nov 1999

Quantitation Of Yohimbine Utilizing Capillary Electrophoresis. Method Development Through Statistical Design., Jonathan Cooper

Theses

In an effort to combat the rising cost of health care in the United States by encouraging preventative and self-care, the federal government passed the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act of 1994. This act essentially deregulated the natural product market allowing herbs, including yohimbine, to be sold over the counter without undergoing the same strict evaluation as a traditional synthetic drug candidate. As the full potential of these natural products is realized, including possible harmful side effects, a need arises for the identification and quantitation of the active components from commercial preparations. Commercial samples were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed for …

A New Look At Actual Minimum Job Requirements And Experience In Similar Occupations And With The Same Employer: Balca's 20 C.F.R. Section 656.21 (B)(6), Lorna Rogers Burgess Nov 1999

A New Look At Actual Minimum Job Requirements And Experience In Similar Occupations And With The Same Employer: Balca's 20 C.F.R. Section 656.21 (B)(6), Lorna Rogers Burgess

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, Ms. Burgess discusses the Board of Alien Labor Certification Appeals (BALCA) which was created by an amendment to 20 C.F.R. § 656.26 and § 656.27. Ms. Burgess asserts that the creation of BALCA has significantly improved the system of adjudication of Applications for Alien Employment Certification. Though BALCA has exerted viable standards, these standards are far from providing analytically sound and practical guidance to practitioners and Certifying Officers. The author suggests that good lawyering in the future may improve BALCA's jurisprudence.

Expatriation In The United States: Precept And Practice Today And Yesterday, Alan G. James

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, Mr. James traces the historical roots of expatriation to its current application in present-day law, regulations and procedures. Using as a reference point both the expatriation of the American novelist Henry James and the United States Supreme Court's 1990 decision in Vance v. Terrazas, the author highlights the major facets of expatriation. Specifically, the author focuses on processing and documentation of loss of nationality cases, development of the role of the Department of State in expatriation, the constituent elements of a determination of loss of nationality, and administrative and judicial review of holdings of loss of citizenship …

Awarding Fair Compensation To Bankruptcy Trustees, Katherine Kruis Nov 1999

Awarding Fair Compensation To Bankruptcy Trustees, Katherine Kruis

San Diego Law Review

For almost a century, bankruptcy trustees have argued with courts regarding appropriate compensation. In 1899, a trustee petitioned the court for a lump sum in lieu of the 3 percent commission allowed under the 1898 Bankruptcy Act. The court held that "the 3 percent commission was amply compensation for all the services performed, and it was the only type of compensation allowed under the [A]ct." In 1986, a trustee submitted a fee application to the court based upon the maximum statutory amount allowed under the 1978 Bankruptcy code. The bankruptcy court reduced the fee. On appeal, the district court affirmed …

State Defiance Of Bankruptcy Law, Eric Winston Nov 1999

State Defiance Of Bankruptcy Law, Eric Winston

Vanderbilt Law Review

Bankruptcy is the principal device by which failing businesses and financially-troubled families get one last chance to reorganize their affairs back to financial health. It is also the graveyard for business failures, the place where we bury dead corporations and divide their remaining assets among their surviving creditors. In the last decade, the bankruptcy system has given seven million middle-class families a way to start over-an opportunity to save their homes from foreclosure, rid themselves of overwhelming debts, and reintegrate themselves into the workforce as productive citizens. It has also been the way that 10,000 corporations have restructured their way …

Whose Who? The Case For A Kantian Right Of Publicity, Alice Haemmerli Nov 1999

Whose Who? The Case For A Kantian Right Of Publicity, Alice Haemmerli

Duke Law Journal

Rapidly developing technological opportunities for unauthorized uses of identity-from "virtual kidnapping" to digitalcasting-coincide with growing demand for a preemptive federal right of publicity that can replace the existing welter of inconsistent state laws. Progress is impeded, however, by intractable doctrinal confusion and academic hostility to the right as allegedly inimical to society's cultural need to manipulate celebrity images. Because the right of publicity is traditionally based on Lockean labor theory and analogized to intellectual property in created works, it is vulnerable to such attacks; to date, no serious attempt has been made to elaborate an alternative philosophical justification that can …
