Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano Nov 1999

Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano

Student Work

Communication and migration are tied through the common concept of community. Communication is the nervous system of a community, transmitting shared ideals, goals, and norms among citizens. Communication also is the process by which a community projects its identity or image to the outside world to attract new individuals who will nourish it economically and socially. Despite this deep connection between communication and community, migration research seldom incorporates communication theory. Likewise, communication scholars rarely look at the process of migration. The purpose of this thesis was to establish those theoretical links between communication and migration, look at how communication has …

On Advancing Truth And Morality In Conflict Resolution, Louis Kriesberg Nov 1999

On Advancing Truth And Morality In Conflict Resolution, Louis Kriesberg

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

The editors of this special issue have articulated many dilemmas facing workers in the fields of conflict analysis and resolution. One way they characterize the difficulties, described by Arthur Koestler , is balancing between spiritually-directed, but socially ineffective activism like that of a Yogi or acting like a Commissar disregarding the means used in order to achieve desirable socioeconomic transformations. This matter is often argued . Some people assert that a wellmeaning person's actions often result in undesired effects, while the person ready to act brutally provides widespread benefits. On the other hand, others argue that acting harshly in …

The Relationship Between Basic Multicellular Unit Activation And Origination In Cancellous Bone, C. J. Hernandez, S. J. Hazelwood, R. B. Martin Nov 1999

The Relationship Between Basic Multicellular Unit Activation And Origination In Cancellous Bone, C. J. Hernandez, S. J. Hazelwood, R. B. Martin

Biomedical Engineering

Activation frequency is often used as a measure of basic multicellular unit (BMU) activity in cancellous bone. However, activation frequency expresses the rate of BMU appearance in a histologic slide and not the rate of origination, which is a more physiologic indicator of remodeling activity and is necessary for the development of BMU-level bone remodeling simulations. Using identical assumptions to those for calculating the activation frequency, it is shown that the origination frequency in cancellous bone is equal to the activation frequency divided by the total distance traveled by the BMU and its width.

Seeing More Than We Can Know: Visual Attention And Category Activation, Cn Macrae, Gv Bodenhausen, Ab Milne, G Calvini Nov 1999

Seeing More Than We Can Know: Visual Attention And Category Activation, Cn Macrae, Gv Bodenhausen, Ab Milne, G Calvini

School of Psychology

Extending existing work on the conditional automaticity of category activation, the present research investigated the extent to which category activation is moderated by the resolution of visual attention. As visual attention gates access to material in semantic memory, so too should it regulate the activation of social categories when triggering verbal labels are encountered. Accordingly, only when triggering stimuli fall within the spotlight of attention did we expect category activation to occur. The results of two studies supported this prediction. We consider the implications of our findings for recent treatments of category automaticity.

Is The Clean Air Act Unconstitutional?, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 1999

Is The Clean Air Act Unconstitutional?, Cass R. Sunstein

Michigan Law Review

This Article deals with two linked questions. The first involves the future of the Clean Air Act. The particular concern is how the Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") might be encouraged, with help from reviewing courts, to issue better ambient air quality standards, and in the process to shift from some of the anachronisms of 1970s environmentalism to a more fruitful approach to environmental protection. The second question involves the role of the nondelegation doctrine in American public law, a doctrine that shows unmistakable signs of revival. I will suggest that improved performance by EPA and agencies in general, operating in …

Biotechnology And The Environment: Issues And Linkages, Sandra S. Batie, David E. Ervin Nov 1999

Biotechnology And The Environment: Issues And Linkages, Sandra S. Batie, David E. Ervin

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The rapidity of change has left scant opportunity for investigation of the consequences of biotechnology adoption on long-term ecosystem or economic system functioning. Economic theory suggests that, if the "Biotechnology Revolution" is left to market forces alone, there will be neglected public goods. Theory and limited empirical evidence suggests that there are significant incentives for private firms to discount and neglect negative environmental impacts and to develop products that meet only the needs of those able and willing to pay. Negative distributional impacts on rural societies and economies will not normally enter the private calculus nor will the long-term problems …

Mechanisms Of Gene Transfer Mediated By Lipoplexes Associated With Targeting Ligands Or Ph-Sensitive Peptides, Sérgio Simões, Vladimir Slepushkin, Pedro Pires, Rogério Gaspar, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima, Nejat Düzgüneş Nov 1999

Mechanisms Of Gene Transfer Mediated By Lipoplexes Associated With Targeting Ligands Or Ph-Sensitive Peptides, Sérgio Simões, Vladimir Slepushkin, Pedro Pires, Rogério Gaspar, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Association of a targeting ligand such as transferrin, or an endosome disrupting peptide such as GALA, with cationic liposome-DNA complexes ('lipoplexes') results in a significant enhancement of transfection of several cell types. Although these strategies can overcome some of the barriers to gene delivery by lipoplexes, the mechanisms by which they actually enhance transfection is not known. In studies designed to establish the targeting specificity of transferrin, we found that apo-transferrin enhances transfection to the same extent as transferrin, indicating that internalization of the lipoplexes is mostly independent of transferrin receptors. These observations were reinforced by results obtained from competitive …

Rising Above The Herd - An Analysis Of The Western Australian Beef & Cattle Industry, Andrew Quinn, Ashley Manners Nov 1999

Rising Above The Herd - An Analysis Of The Western Australian Beef & Cattle Industry, Andrew Quinn, Ashley Manners

Animal production and livestock published reports

This report has been produced at the request of the Agriculture Western Australia, Meat Program Partnership Group. The intention of the report is to set out a number of priority areas for concentrated Agency and industry attention to assist with the development of the Western Australian beef and cattle industry.

  • Global per capita consumption of beef is currently flat to slowly reducing, with total consumption volumes rising in line with population and wealth increases.

  • Global trade in live cattle is experiencing a slow, steady increase in volumes influenced by trade factors encouraging in-country processing and finishing of cattle, and a …

Immune Cd8+ T Cells Prevent Reactivation Of Toxoplasma Gondii Infection In The Immunocompromised Host, Imtiaz A. Khan, William R. Green, Lloyd H. Kasper, Kathy A. Green, Joseph D. Schwartzman Nov 1999

Immune Cd8+ T Cells Prevent Reactivation Of Toxoplasma Gondii Infection In The Immunocompromised Host, Imtiaz A. Khan, William R. Green, Lloyd H. Kasper, Kathy A. Green, Joseph D. Schwartzman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Toxoplasma gondii remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals that are immunosuppressed, patients with AIDS in particular. The cellular immune response, especially by gamma interferon (IFN-γ)-producing CD8+ T cells, is an essential component of protective immunity against the parasite. In the present study the role of CD8+ T cells during the reactivation of Toxoplasma infection in an immunocompromised murine model was evaluated. Chronically infected mice were challenged with LP-BM5 virus, and the kinetics of CD8+ T-cell function was studied. At 10 weeks after viral infection, mice showed obvious signs of systemic illness and began …
