Assessing The Best Interests Of The Child: Missouri Declares That A Homosexual Parent Is Not Ipso Facto Unfit For Custody, Heidi C. Doerhoff

Missouri Law Review

In formal child custody disputes, the voices of those at the center of the controversy, the children, are rarely heard.Their parents, who otherwise are presumed to act in their best interests, battle one another in legal proceedings that reward the parent who more persuasively portrays the deficiencies of the other's parenting skills. Because the children, especially the very young, have no adequate basis for making judgments about their long-term well-being, the state acts asparenspatriae while their parents are adversaries.Through its laws and decision makers, the state attempts to ensure that the final custody arrangement is guided by the best interests …

Students (N=181, 54.7% female, 63.5% African American) completed test batteries during their fifth- (age=10.7±0.7 years), sixth-, and seventh-grade years. The Previous Day Physical Activity Recall (PDPAR) was used to assess 30-min blocks of vigorous physical activity (VPA), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), TV watching and other sedentary activities, and estimated energy expenditure (EE). Fitness measures included the PWC 170 cycle ergometer test, strength tests, triceps skinfold thickness, and BMI. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for VPA, MVPA, and after-school EE …

Children's Knowledge, Teachers' Knowledge: Implications For Early Childhood Teacher Education, Joy Cullen Nov 1999

Children's Knowledge, Teachers' Knowledge: Implications For Early Childhood Teacher Education, Joy Cullen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

A recent explosion of research on young children's knowledge raises issues for early childhood educators with regard to the extent to which early childhood programs incorporate the knowledge base that children bring to their learning. Recent psychological work on children's domain knowledge reveals early competencies that contribute to subsequent conceptual learning. Studies of learning in early childhood settings suggest further that sociocultural mechanisms (or constraints) of learning are important factors in children's knowledge construction in the early years. These studies also indicate the interface of content and processes in young children's knowledge construction. It is argued that the professional knowledge …

Enhanced Apoptosis Mediates Inhibition Of Ebv-Transformed Lymphoblastoid Cell Line Proliferation By Curcumin., D Ranjan, T D Johnston, K S Reddy, G Wu, Subbarao Bondada, C Chen

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated B-cell lymphomas occur more frequently in immunodeficient states such as organ transplantation and HIV infection. We have previously reported that B cell immortalization with EBV was promoted by cyclosporin A (CyA) and that curcumin (Cur), a natural phenol with known antioxidant and antitumor properties, blocked EBV-induced B cell immortalization. In the following experiments we show that Cur inhibits the proliferation of EBV-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL) via enhanced apoptosis.

METHODS: LCL were generated by infecting freshly isolated human B cells with EBV (B95-8) for 12 h and coculturing with predetermined optimal concentrations of CyA (500 ng/ml) …
