A Longitudinal Examination Of The Consequences Of Sexual Victimization For Rural Young Adult Women, Janine Zweig, Lisa J. Crockett, Aline Sayer, Judith Vicary Nov 1999

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Consequences Of Sexual Victimization For Rural Young Adult Women, Janine Zweig, Lisa J. Crockett, Aline Sayer, Judith Vicary

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This longitudinal study examined the consequences of sexual victimization in a sample of 237 young adult women from a rural community. Of the total sample, 71 (30%) reported experiencing some type of unwanted sex. Multiple regression was used to examine the effects on psychosocial adjustment of unwanted sex that occurred through nonviolent coercion and violent coercion, respectively, controlling for prior psychological adjustment. Results indicated that women who reported physically violent sexual coercion exhibited poorer psychological and social/relational adjustment than either nonvictimized women or women who had experienced nonviolent forms of sexual coercion. Additionally, nonviolent sexual coercion was associated with higher …

1991-1992 & 1996 Utah Usage Of Ems Services By Children: Year Iii Research Report, Intermountain Injury Control Research Center, U.S. Department Of Commerce

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This study examined how Utah children used emergency medical services (EMS) and related hospital care in 1991-1992. The EMS and hospital records were linked using special software (probabilistic linkage) . The principal findings of the study concerned the care of young children less than 5 years of age. They received fewer procedures prior to being transported to a hospital and required more time at the scene for assessment. Some interventions such as splinting of fractured arms prior to transport to a hospital were related to reduced hospital charges. Ambulance and hospital charges for children were estimated to by $35,000,000 not …

Portal Imaging Using A Csi (Tl) Scintillator Coupled To A Cooled Ccd Camera, Amit Sawant

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The purpose of this research was to design a high performance digital portal imaging
system, using a transparent x-ray scintillator coupled to a cooled CCD camera. Theoretical
analysis using Monte Carlo simulation was performed to calculate the QDE, SNR and DQE of
the system. A prototype electronic portal imaging device (EPID) was built, using a 12.7 mm
thick, 20.32 cm diameter, CsI (Tl) scintillator, coupled to an Astromed ® liquid nitrogen cooled
CCD TV camera. The system geometry of the prototype EPID was optimized to achieve high
spatial resolution. Experimental evaluation of the prototype EPID was performed, by
determining its …

Management Directions For Western Australia's Estuarine And Marine Embayment Fisheries : A Strategic Approach To Management., Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

This paper does not attempt to provide solutions to individual fishery problems, nor to all of the strategic problems, nor does it claim to evaluate all the options available to managers. Rather, the paper is intended to trigger discussion as to how all interest groups can work together to achieve a balance for these fisheries and their environment. It is a starting point.

Construct Validity Of The Continuous Recognition Memory Test, K. L. Fuchs, J. H. Hannay, W. M. Huckeba, K. A. Espy

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

A principal factor analysis was performed on variables derived from a neuropsychological battery administered to 100 healthy young adults (aged 17-41 yrs) to investigate the construct validity of the Continuous Recognition Memory test (CRM). It was hypothesized that CRM "hits" and "false alarms" would load on different factors. The factors that emerged in the analysis were labeled Verbal Ability, Divided Attention, Attention to Visual Detail, Visuomotor Integration and Planning, and Learning and Memory. As expected, CRM hits had a significant loading on the Learning and Memory factor. However, CRM false alarms did not have a significant loading on the Divided …

Neuropsychologic Function In Toddlers Exposed To Cocaine In Utero: A Preliminary Study, K. A. Espy, P. M. Kaufmann, M. L. Glisky Nov 1999

Neuropsychologic Function In Toddlers Exposed To Cocaine In Utero: A Preliminary Study, K. A. Espy, P. M. Kaufmann, M. L. Glisky

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Patterns of neuropsychological performance on A-not-B, inhibition, motor, cognitive, language, and behavior tasks were examined in 34 toddlers--17 cocaine-exposed (CE) and 17 nonexposed (NE) controls. CE toddlers exhibited greater perseveration, less inhibition, poorer emotional regulation, and less task orientation relative to NE toddlers. Overall cognitive and language skills and motor impairment status were comparable among CE and NE toddlers. Differences in perseveration, emotional regulation, and task orientation between CE and NE toddlers remained significant after statistically controlling for overall cognitive skill. Prenatal cocaine exposure may impart selective vulnerability for deficits in executive function, inhibition, and emotional regulation in toddlers, perhaps …

Income Distribution, City Size, And The Role Of Public Transportation, Thomas W. Sanchez Nov 1999

Income Distribution, City Size, And The Role Of Public Transportation, Thomas W. Sanchez

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This article presents an income inequality analysis for all 1990 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The analysis is concerned with whether public transportation has a detectable influence on levels of urban income equality. Because public transportation systems are generally designed to link residences with employment locations, higher levels of transit service provision, all other factors being equal, should be associated with higher employment rates and more uniform distributions of economic gains. The research presented here was influenced by an analysis originally performed by Haworth, Long, and Rasmussen (1978). Along with there study, few analyses have tried to evaluate policies that …

Why Conflict Transformation Matters: Three Cases, Frank Dukes Nov 1999

Why Conflict Transformation Matters: Three Cases, Frank Dukes

Peace and Conflict Studies

This essay begins with an examination of the importance of conflict transformation. The failings of an ideology of management currently dominating the conflict resolution field are contrasted with components of a transformative practice. I then offer three cases from my own experience and draw lessons from them to illustrate the potential of conflict resolution in three distinct areas: fostering community, building a responsive governance, and resolving public conflict. The examples are the following:

  • A school redistricting dispute, where a return to the sense of common purpose and community was the primary goal of the convenors;
  • A tri-jurisdiction community visioning …

Privacy And Democracy In Cyberspace, Paul M. Schwartz Nov 1999

Privacy And Democracy In Cyberspace, Paul M. Schwartz

Vanderbilt Law Review

In this Article, Professor Schwartz depicts the widespread, silent collection of personal information in cyberspace. At present, it is impossible to know the fate of the personal data that one generates online. Professor Schwartz argues that this state of affairs degrades the health of a deliberative democracy; it cloaks in dark uncertainty the transmutation of Internet activity into personal information that will follow one into other areas and discourage civic participation. This situation also will have a negative impact on individual self- determination by deterring individuals from engaging in the necessary thinking out loud and deliberation with others upon which …
