Predictors Of Practice Role Commitment And Practice Role Value For Doctorally Prepared Nursing Faculty., Anna Karin Walker Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between environmental, career, and personal factors and practice role commitment and practice role value of doctorally prepared full-time nursing faculty within the theoretical framework of faculty role performance by Blackburn and Lawrence (1995). A mailed survey was used to collect data related to faculty practice from 506 faculty who were members of the American Nurses Association or the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Practice role commitment was level of engagement in the practice role. Practice role value was importance assigned to the practice role by the faculty. Environmental variables …

The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge Jan 1999

The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research addressed the question of the importance of the service encounter (both functional and social support components) and the importance of the technical component in consumers' judgements of service quality. To date in the literature no one has attempted to measure in a field setting, the relative contribution to the judgement of service quality of each of these components. This research switched the focus of the service quality's definition from the provider's point of view to the consumer. By measuring the three service components' importance, the researcher hoped to obtain a clearer understanding of the consumer's determination as to …

Natalie Vivian Scott: The Origins, People And Times Of The French Quarter Renaissance (1920-1930)., John Wyeth Scott Ii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is the interwoven story of Natalie Vivian Scott, war hero, author, adventurer and humanitarian, and the French Quarter Renaissance during the 1920s, when Natalie Scott was a vital member of the talented coterie of writers and artists whose talents prospered there, including Sherwood Anderson, William Faulkner, William Spratling, Lyle Saxon, Roark Bradford, Oliver La Farge, John Dos Passos, Hamilton Basso, Meigs Frost, among others. This work's premise is that the decayed, crumbling French Quarter, falling into irreversible decline, was saved during the early 1920s by an outburst of local creativity and organizational energy that inspired restoration and a unique, …

Progressive Civic Development And Political Conflict: Regular Democrats And Reformers In New Orleans, 1896-1912., Robert Louis Dupont Jan 1999

Progressive Civic Development And Political Conflict: Regular Democrats And Reformers In New Orleans, 1896-1912., Robert Louis Dupont

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The 1896 elections in Louisiana produced a Regular Democrat as governor, but a reform government within New Orleans. The turbulence of the Populist era led to the unification of political factions behind disfranchisement of blacks and a narrowing of the electorate. In spite of attempts to make their triumph permanent, New Orleans reformers gave way to a resurgent Regular Democratic organization, the Choctaw Club, which dominated city politics for the first half of the twentieth century. Mayors Paul Capdevielle and Martin Behrman successfully led the city in an era of commercial expansion, public works, and municipal reform. That leadership persisted …

Women's Voices In Education: Two Jamaican Life Histories., Ethel L. King-Mckenzie Jan 1999

Women's Voices In Education: Two Jamaican Life Histories., Ethel L. King-Mckenzie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main purpose of this study is to recover the marginalized voices of women educators in Jamaica by turning their oral life histories into text. It was not possible to interview all women educators in Jamaica so I have used the life histories of two women who were the 'first' women to take positions in educational leadership in two spheres that were once male dominated. Both women have made it to the zenith of the education profession. These women relate their life experiences and the meanings they give to their work as educators. Women have always played important roles in …

The Names Project Aids Memorial Quilt: A Novelistic Approach To Decoding The Layers Of Meaning In The "Pieced" Social Drama., Louis Edward Myers Jan 1999

The Names Project Aids Memorial Quilt: A Novelistic Approach To Decoding The Layers Of Meaning In The "Pieced" Social Drama., Louis Edward Myers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study, I focus on the AIDS crisis as a social drama, and evaluate the various functions the AIDS Memorial Quilt plays within that drama. Using Victor Turner's concept of social drama I first discuss the breach, crisis, redression, and reintegration stages. I identify two fundamental breaches in the AIDS drama---the health breach and the moral/religious breach. As regards the crisis phase of the drama, I identify specific crisis performers and performances. Although many attempts were made at redression, I conclude that most attempts were not successful as redressive acts. Rather than "solve" or "set straight" particular issues within …

Epidemiology Of Anthrax In The Kruger National Park, South Africa: Genetic Diversity And Environment., Kimothy Lyn Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Kruger National Park, (KNP), in the Republic of South Africa, provides a unique opportunity to investigate interesting and unresolved aspects of the epidemiology of the disease anthrax. Anthrax is a disease of primarily mammals caused by the Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacteria Bacillus anthracis. Beyond it's great historical significance anthrax is clearly important in the world today. From a rich legacy of empirical investigations and observations in the form of ecological and epidemiological studies conducted around the world this work endeavors to distill and extract the essence of what biotic and abiotic factors of environment might be causally associated with …

Analysis Of *Policy Alternatives In The Implementation Of A Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program For Agriculture., Hugo Cardona Castillo Jan 1999

Analysis Of *Policy Alternatives In The Implementation Of A Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program For Agriculture., Hugo Cardona Castillo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Agriculture has been singled out as one of the major nonpoint sources of water pollution. To identify alternative policy tools for the implementation of a non-regulatory approach to comply with the Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program (CNPCP) required by The Coastal Zone Act Reauthorization Amendments of 1990, policy makers need to determine factors that may influence producers' willingness to adopt proposed Best Management Practices (BMPs). Neoclassical economic concepts of utility maximization on the part of agricultural producers constitutes the theoretical background in this study, but it is enhanced with the incorporation of a well proved set of theoretical tools based …

Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine Jan 1999

Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation seeks to discover and analyze the divergent ways that higher education has been legitimated by American discourse in the twentieth century. Institutions of higher learning have been able to survive and flourish because they have been seen as essential to the health of a democracy, of a free-market economy, and of religious institutions. However, the explanations for such legitimacy have been diverse and varied. Bormann's fantasy theme analysis can account for the values and beliefs that form the institutional environments shaping and legitimating organizations such as colleges and universities. Fantasy themes expressed in popular discourse are expressions of …

A Novel Approach To Dna Sequencing Employing Near -Ir Fluorescence Detection Coupled With Microscale Reaction Vessels With Capillary Gel Separations., Daryl Clifford Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Electropherograms of oligonucleotides labeled with near-IR fluorescent dyes, separated by capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) and detected using an ultrasensitive near-IR fluorescence detection system will be presented. A Universal M13 sequencing primer was labeled on the 5' end with a near-IR dye containing an isothiocyanate functional group. Comparison of the on-column detection limits in capillary gel electrophoresis for the near-IR-labeled sequencing primer to that of a visible fluorescein-labeled primer indicated improved sensitivity for the near-IR case. The detection limit was found to be 3.4 x 10-20 moles (SNR = 3) for the near-IR-labeled primer while the on-column detection limit for the …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Heinrich Herzogenberg was born into nobility in Graz, Austria, on June 10, 1843. He began studying music at the University of Vienna in 1862, and at the home of one of his teachers, Herzogenberg was often in the company of Brahms. In the years that followed, Herzogenberg and his wife Elisabet became close friends of Brahms and actively promoted his music. Through this close association with Brahms, Herzogenberg's compositional style was greatly influenced. Herzogenberg studied harmony and counterpoint with Simon Sechter, and in 1875, along with others, founded the Leipzig Bachverein (Leipzig Bach Society). This association with the Bach Society …

Risk Management Of Aflatoxin Through Mutagenic Potential Modification And Toxin Formation By Intrinsic Components In Food., Syed Shahid Ali Jan 1999

Risk Management Of Aflatoxin Through Mutagenic Potential Modification And Toxin Formation By Intrinsic Components In Food., Syed Shahid Ali

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aflatoxins are the secondary metabolites of Aspergillus flavus and their presence in food and feed crops is unavoidable. This study evaluates the antimutagenic properties of phytic and linoleic acids in aflatoxin-affected food. A reduction in the number of revertants was a function of an increased concentration of phytic/linoleic acids and phosphotidylinositol in the Salmonella/microsomal mutagenicity assay (tester strains TA-100 and TA-98) with and without metabolic activation (S-9). Linoleic acid (10 and 100 mug/plate) and phosphotidylinositol (25mug/plate) were antimutagenic against most of the mutagens tested. Although a reduction in the number of revertants was observed in the phytic acid treatments, the …

Increased Nutritional Value And Oxidative Stability Of Restructured Beef Roasts With Purified Extracts From Rice Bran., Joo-Shin Kim Jan 1999

Increased Nutritional Value And Oxidative Stability Of Restructured Beef Roasts With Purified Extracts From Rice Bran., Joo-Shin Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of semi-purified extracts of rice bran were studied in restructured beef roasts to increase nutritional value and oxidative stability. Crude rice bran oil at 0, 1, and 2% (w/w) was added to restructured beef roasts that were stored at 4°C and analyzed at 0, 7, and 14 d. Saturated fatty acid to unsaturated fatty acid (SFA/UFA) ratio decreased, vitamin E vitamers increased (p < 0.05), and cholesterol decreased in the beef roasts with rice bran oil. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) numbers were lower (p < 0.05) in the beef roasts with rice bran oil after 7 days of storage and the cholesterol oxidation product, 7-ketocholesterol, decreased in a similar manner. The addition of 2% rice bran oil (RBO) was effective in increasing nutritional value and reducing the level of oxidative degradation. Beef roasts containing either rice fiber (RF) or RF/RBO had higher oxidative stability (p < 0.05) during storage (0, 4, and 8 d) compared to control roasts, with no additive. TBARs value and 7-ketocholesterol of beef roasts with RF and RF/RBO were lower (p < 0.05) than those of the control during storage. SFA/UFA ratio was significantly reduced in beef roasts with additives, whereas vitamin E vitamers and UFA were higher (p < 0.05) in the roasts with RF/RBO. Beef roasts containing RF and RBO were acceptable to consumers in sensory attributes. Cholesterol autoxidation was examined in an aqueous meat model system with different levels of nonsaponifiable fraction from rice bran (0, 700, 1400, and 2100 ppm). The effect of nonsaponifiable fraction was determined at 4 h intervals for 16 h at pH 5.5 and 80°C. Increased oxidation time reduced (p < 0.05) total vitamin E vitamers and cholesterol concentration. Oryzanol was not significantly reduced with the 2100 ppm treatment after 4 h cholesterol oxidation. An increase in the nonsaponifiable fraction resulted in a decrease (p < 0.05) in the formation of 7-ketocholesterol. The highest level of additive (2100 ppm) was the most effective in inhibiting cholesterol autoxidation; the order of inhibition was 91.7% (2100 ppm) > 81.8% (1400 ppm) > 63.1% (700 ppm).

Production Of Transgenic Eastern Oysters., John Terrell Buchanan Jan 1999

Production Of Transgenic Eastern Oysters., John Terrell Buchanan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, supports a valuable industry in the United States and Louisiana. In recent years this industry has been plagued by diseases, creating interest in the use of gene transfer to produce oysters capable of eliminating pathogens. The goal of this work was to develop techniques for laboratory research of eastern oysters, and for transfer of genes to oyster gametes, larvae, and adults. Cell culture provides an effective alternative to work in whole animals. Cell attachment and spreading on various culture substrates was improved, and poly-D-lysine was identified as a superior substrate. Toxicity of the antibiotic G418 …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: A Gis Study Of Changes In Cemetery Locations In Southeastern Louisiana From An Archaeological And Geographical Perspective, 1930--1997., Cindy Ann Nance Jan 1999

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: A Gis Study Of Changes In Cemetery Locations In Southeastern Louisiana From An Archaeological And Geographical Perspective, 1930--1997., Cindy Ann Nance

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cemeteries in southeastern Louisiana are in varying stages of use---from presently in use and maintained to no longer visible on the surface. The abandonment of traditional cemeteries in southeastern Louisiana illustrates evolving settlement patterns. Earlier settlement patterns were dependent on physiographic and cultural landscape features. As settlement patterns evolve, the preferred locations of cemeteries change. As a recent participant in the nationwide preference for urban-associated Memorial Parks, is Louisiana in the process of abandoning traditional cemetery landscapes? Six factors that contribute to the abandonment of traditional cemeteries from 1930 to 1997 are presented in this study. Evolving communities, demographic shifts, …

In experiment 1, 19 primiparous Holstein cows were randomly assigned to dietary treatments consisting of either a control ration or control plus 15 g/d of supplemental rumen-protected choline (60 g/d of Cap-Shure, Balchem Corp., Slate Hill, NY). Close-up and early lactation rations were formulated from a grass hay and corn silage forage base, respectively, with a corn-soy concentrate, whole cottonseed. and alfalfa hay included as appropriate to meet nutrient requirements. Cows were milked twice daily. Cows …

The Potential Of High Oryzanol Rice Bran Oil As An Antioxidant In Whole Milk Powder., Jackin Njagi Nanua Jan 1999

The Potential Of High Oryzanol Rice Bran Oil As An Antioxidant In Whole Milk Powder., Jackin Njagi Nanua

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Lipid autoxidation of whole milk powder (WMP) during storage lowers its organoleptic quality and causes accumulation of oxidation products. This study evaluated the effectiveness of high-oryzanol (2.5%) rice bran oil (RBO) as an antioxidant in WMP. The powder was fortified with 0.1% and 0.2% RBO and its oxidation studied during accelerated storage at 45°C and 0.31 water activity for 40 days. Free radicals were determined by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Oxidation was estimated by determining thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and cholesterol oxidation products using gas chromatography. The effect of RBO on flavor and consumer preference of freshly manufactured milk …
