Seismic Evaluation Of The U3ax/Bl Landfill In The Area 3 Rwms, Nevada Test Site, Nevada, Maximilian Kemnitz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A site evaluation, a seismic hazard analysis and a site response analysis were performed for the U3ax/b1 landfill which is located within the Area 3 Radioactive Waste Management Site of the Nevada Test Site. The site evaluation included application of the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves method to determine the low-strain shear modulus for the alluvium and landfill waste. The seismic hazard analysis included evaluation of potential ground motions from earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions. The worst-case seismic hazard was defined in terms of the controlling earthquake, produced by rupture of the Yucca Fault. The controlling earthquake was modeled in the site response analysis …

Chapter 4 provides results concerning an estimate of the reliability and initial validity study. Chapter 5 includes …

Community-Based Corrections: Offender Characteristics And Success In A Halfway House, Ana Maria Del Carmen Gutierrez Jan 1999

Community-Based Corrections: Offender Characteristics And Success In A Halfway House, Ana Maria Del Carmen Gutierrez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Prison crowding and tight correctional budgets over the past decade have sparked renewed interest in alternative or community-based sentencing options. These non-incarcerative sentences hold the potential for both reining in skyrocketing costs and also providing a more effective setting for rehabilitative interventions. One type of community-based program is the halfway house. Halfway houses are most often used to ease the transition of offenders from the prison to the community by providing temporary housing, job placement assistance, and other services. In addition, in many jurisdictions courts are sentencing offenders directly to halfway houses as a part of the conditions of probation. …

Quality Of Life Amidst The Lights Of Las Vegas, Terri Lynn Hicks Jan 1999

Quality Of Life Amidst The Lights Of Las Vegas, Terri Lynn Hicks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent literature on quality of life indicators and sustainability has focused on quantifiable measurements, not qualitative. In actuality, the whole concept of quality of life is a subjective valuation of a myriad of issues by individuals. The purpose of this thesis, based on the testing of a model, is to identify these subjective quality of life variables and determine which variables are currently significant to residents in Southern Nevada. This thesis determines if quality of life, measured by individual respondents overall satisfaction with living in Southern Nevada, is a function of different social characteristics by looking at the following community …

Descriptive Experience Sampling Of Individuals With Symptoms Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Daniela S Hugelshofer Jan 1999

Descriptive Experience Sampling Of Individuals With Symptoms Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Daniela S Hugelshofer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study employed the Descriptive Experience Sampling method to investigate the inner experiences of three individuals with symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and one non-OCD-symptom participant. Participants were provided with a random-interval generator (beeper) and were asked to "freeze" the aspects of their inner experience at the moment of the beep and record this experience in a notebook. Participants met with the investigators within 24 hours to discuss each of these sampled moments in detail. Salient characteristics were identified for each participant. Characteristics of inner experience were found to be shared across subjects: OCD-symptom participants were found to have a …

Dose Dependent Changes In The Cristaneuroepitheium Resulting From Gentamicinototoxicity In The Chinchilla, Hasan Tanyeri̇, Ivan Lopez, Larry Hoffman

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of gentamicin (GM) on the neuroepithelial morphology of the posterior crista ampullares (PCA) of the adult chinchilla. The experiment focused on hair cell (HC) morphology to monitor GM's dose-dependent effects and also to define an ototoxically-efficient and safe dose what would subsequently be used in a time course study. Chinchillas (n=13) were treated with subcutaneous (SC) daily doses of 120 mg/kg, 60 mg/kg, and 30 mg/kg GM, respectively, for six days. Light microscopy observations were made from the excised PCA of two animals from each group that survided the complete treatment …

The Effects Of Smoking On Glutathione Levels Inbronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid, Füsun Alataş, Necla Özdemi̇r, Özkan Alataş, Si̇nan Ergi̇nel, Muzaffer Meti̇ntaş, Rana Işik

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cigarette smoke contains high concentrations of oxidants and reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term cigarette smoking on glutathione (GSH) levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Nineteen current cigarette smokers and seven healthy nonsmoking volunteers were included in the study. BAL was performed by infusion of five sequential 20 ml aliquots and each aliquot was immediately aspirated. The levels of GSH were determined in BAL fluids. The epithelial lining fluid volume was calculated by the ratio of urea concentration in BAL fluid to that in serum. Lower GSH levels were observed in …

A Combined Variation Of The Arteries And The Nerve In A Leg, Zeli̇ha Kurtoğlu, M. Haluk Uluutku Jan 1999

A Combined Variation Of The Arteries And The Nerve In A Leg, Zeli̇ha Kurtoğlu, M. Haluk Uluutku

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

During the dissection of an amputed leg, we discovered a combined variation involving the branching of the popliteal artery and tibial nerve. The popliteal artery showed a trifurcation pattern, and one of its branches, the posterior tibial artery, was hypoplastic. In addition, a small branch arising from the tibial nerve in the upper part of the leg distally crossed the peroneal artery and contributed to the medial plantar nerve. In this article, such a case of embryonic origin is discussed, along with the clinical significance of these variations. The variant nerve and its relationship with the variant artery have not …

Social Security Reform: Improving Benefit Adequacy And Economic Security For Women, Timothy M. Smeeding Jan 1999

Social Security Reform: Improving Benefit Adequacy And Economic Security For Women, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

This policy brief is designed to raise awareness of the current and future economic circumstances of older women, and the ways in which Social Security reform can help alleviate their unmet needs. It considers the gaps in benefit adequacy and economic security that are not addressed by current Social Security reform proposals and then suggests a series of modest, low-cost reforms to help close these gaps. If our proposals are adopted, Social Security reform will not only close the long-run financial deficit, but it will also greatly reduce the future poverty status of older women, particularly those who live alone. …

The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich Jan 1999

The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich

Center for Policy Research

This paper summarizes the results of other analyses by the author with regard to the importance of relative cohort size (RCS) in determining male relative income (the income of young adults relative to prime-age workers) and general patterns of economic growth, and in turn influencing fertility in the currently more-developed nations. It then goes on to demonstrate that these same effects appear to have been operating in all of the 100-odd nations which have experienced the fertility transition since 1950. Parameter estimates based on the experience of all 189 countries identified by the United Nations between 1950 and 1995 are …

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler Jan 1999

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler

Kinesiology and Public Health

Objective: Dietary intake has long been looked upon as a potentially modifiable risk factor for gallbladder disease (GBD), here defined as either having gallstones or having had surgery for gallstones. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for an association between dietary intake and GBD, focusing on six dietary factors that have received the most attention in studies in this area: energy intake, fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates and fibre, calcium and alcohol. The objectives of this review are to evaluate the potential usefulness of altering the diet to prevent GBD and to consider future research in this area. Design: We reviewed …

In Memoriam: Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Christina B. Whitman Jan 1999

In Memoriam: Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Christina B. Whitman

Articles

At the time of his resignation, Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. was justly praised as a moderate, flexible jurist - open-minded, suspicious of ideology, most often found at the center of a divided Supreme Court. Yet Justice Powell was a man of deeply conservative instincts. Suspicious of invitations to expand the scope of individual constitutional rights, he was a participant and even a leader in the Court's reassertion of a federalism that emphasized deference to states and in its reinvigoration of restrictions on access to federal courts. His jurisprudence was all of a piece. Justice Powell's reluctance to expand federal …

Massachusetts' Domestic Partnership Challenge: Hope For A Better Future, Jennifer Levi Jan 1999

Massachusetts' Domestic Partnership Challenge: Hope For A Better Future, Jennifer Levi

Faculty Scholarship

Acknowledging that its decision means that "some household members" may be without a "critical social necessity," the Massachusetts Supreme Iudicial Court (SJC) ruled in Connors v. City of Boston that Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino's executive order granting health insurance benefits to the domestic partners of city employees could not stand in the face of a Massachusetts state insurance law. In Connors, the SJC simultaneously recognized that although the demographics of Massachusetts households have changed within the more than forty years since the state insurance law, G.L. c. 32B (Chapter 32B), was adopted, that law nevertheless constrains municipalities from extending …
