Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden Jan 1999

Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This article addresses two central issues regarding the 1998-99 National Basketball Association (“NBA”) lockout: 1) its impact on labor law doctrine and 2) what it reveals about the state of labor relations in the United States. The author concludes that, while the use of the traditional lockout weapon did not break any new ground in the area of labor law, the unique attributes of the NBA labor dispute provide insight into the condition of the American labor movement and public perceptions of unions. In particular, the author notes that the NBA lockout highlights both the dramatic differences in the power …

Bankruptcy Takings, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers Jan 1999

Bankruptcy Takings, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

The Takings Clause is a vital consideration in determining the treatment of secured creditors in bankruptcy. This Article will explain why the Takings Clause is relevant and why scholars engaged in the debate over secured credit must consider the constitutionality of their proposals in light of the takings issue. In Part I of the Article, I explore the ways in which current bankruptcy law provides protection and gives deference to property rights. I also discuss certain proposals that would reduce the protection given to secured parties. Part II provides an overview of takings law and discusses some of the cases …

Deception In Interpersonal Settings: The Relationship Between The Content Of An Excuse And Its Recipient, Vera Margaret Trefry Jan 1999

Deception In Interpersonal Settings: The Relationship Between The Content Of An Excuse And Its Recipient, Vera Margaret Trefry

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A correlational study investigated the nature of excuses, including the relationship of excuse complexity, uniqueness, frequency, and success to the level of knowledge the recipient has about the excuse giver. Analysis of results from responses of 121 participants to questionnaires describing excuses to employers, teachers, parents, and spouse/boy/girlfriends found that the complexity and uniqueness of excuses vary positively with the knowledge level of the recipient, but only when an unequal power relationship exists between the recipient and the excuse giver. Excuses to recipients with a low personal knowledge level of the excuse giver, such as employers or teachers, tended to …

The Relationship Between Percent Deficit Ideal Body Weight And The Prevalence, Severity, And Healing Of Pressure Ulcers, Cheryl Anne Masters Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Percent Deficit Ideal Body Weight And The Prevalence, Severity, And Healing Of Pressure Ulcers, Cheryl Anne Masters

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This retrospective study determined whether percent deficit ideal body weight (IBW) was a risk factor for the prevalence, severity or healing of pressure ulcers. This study hypothesized that nursing home residents below their IBW with pressure ulcers have more severe, higher prevalence, and a slower healing rate than resident who are above their IBW. Medical record data were analyzed for all subjects that met the selection criteria from April, 1997 to April, 1998. Fifty-eight subjects aged 39 to 104 years were assigned to one of two groups (Group 1(n=28) were less than 99% of IBW; Group 2 (n=30) were greater …

Business As Usual: The Dynamics Of Government‐Business Relations In The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Tuck Hong James Tang Jan 1999

Business As Usual: The Dynamics Of Government‐Business Relations In The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Tuck Hong James Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This is an attempt to evaluate the implications of Hong Kong's political transition topost-colonial rule for economic governance in the SAR beyond the 'Beijing versus HongKong' perspective. The article examines the changing government-business dynamics inHong Kong after the reversion by focusing on three inter-related dimensions: economicideology; institutional and policy framework; and the new political environment inpost-colonial Hong Kong. By challenging the assertion that Hong Kong is returning to thepre-Patten colonial order under Chinese management, it argues that economic governancein Hong Kong has always been more complex than has been characterized in the literature.A conceptual framework incorporating the dynamic interplay of …

Introduction: Hong Kong After The Reversion: In Search Of A Post‐Colonial Order, Tuck Hong James Tang Jan 1999

Introduction: Hong Kong After The Reversion: In Search Of A Post‐Colonial Order, Tuck Hong James Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The political handover of Hong Kong on 1 July 1997 turned out to be a non-eventwith little political drama. Emotions ran high when the Union Jack was loweredand was replaced by the Chinese national flag (wuxing hongqi), peacefully endingover one and a half centuries of British colonial rule in Hong Kong. The handovertook place smoothly, despite the heavy rain, without political and social turbulence. The Sino-British disagreement over the abolition of the Legislative Council marredthe occasion, but the swearing-in of a pro-Beijing Provisional Legislative Councilwas largely accepted as a fait accompli.

The Construction And Experience Of Nature: Perspectives Of Urban Youths, Lily Kong, Belinda Yuen, Navjot S. Sodhi, Clive Briffett

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we explore the ways in which young people in a highly urbanised setting experience and develop constructions of nature. We do so by using Singapore as our case study, an Asian context in which urbanisation is total (Singapore's population is totally urbanised), Based on focus group discussions, we conclude that young Singaporeans have little interest in and affinity for nature. This stems from a few factors: growing up in a highly urban environment in which contact with nature is limited; over-protective parents of two-children families who worry about the 'dangers' their children are exposed to when playing …

Seasonal Investigation Of Native Fishes And Their Habitats In Missouri River And Yellowstone River Backwaters, Shannon J. Fisher Jan 1999

Seasonal Investigation Of Native Fishes And Their Habitats In Missouri River And Yellowstone River Backwaters, Shannon J. Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interactions between the Missouri River and its floodplain have been severely degraded due to channelization and impoundment. Ecologists have assumed that backwaters are a critical habitat component for certain life stages of native fishes; however, documented relationships are limited. During this study, I monitored fishes, invertebrates, and habitats to help determine the importance of backwaters to native fishes of various life stages, and to assess the changes that occur in habitat characteristics and invertebrate densities during periods with differential connectivity. Seven assemblages of fishes, identified with catch-per-unit-effort data, had at least some relationship with the backwaters. The assemblages included two …

The Relationship Between A Functional Throwing Performance Test And Strength Of Various Scapular Muscles, Karen L. Bos, Kellie S. Gehrs, A. Louise C. Hester Jan 1999

The Relationship Between A Functional Throwing Performance Test And Strength Of Various Scapular Muscles, Karen L. Bos, Kellie S. Gehrs, A. Louise C. Hester

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the strength of the upper trapezius, middle trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior, and overhead throwing accuracy in 52 female collegiate softball players. The correlation between manual muscle testing (MMT) and hand-held dynamometry (HHD) was also examined. The Functional Throwing Performance Index (FTPI) was used to measure throwing accuracy. Spearman’s correlation analysis demonstrated no correlation between the strength assessments and throwing accuracy, as measured by the FTPI. Moderate correlations were found between MMT and HHD strength assessments of the lower and middle trapezius and serratus anterior muscles. A poor …

Shaping Regional Economies To Sustain Quality Work: The Cooperative Health Care Network, Peter R. Pitegoff

Faculty Publications

This chapter chronicles a creative response to social retrenchment, a saga of strategic deployment of accessible resources and a reshaping of regional economic forces for the benefit of targeted labor markets. While charting its own course, CHCB is part of a mutually supportive network of health care employers and trainers, including successful home care companies in Philadelphia and the South Bronx. Together, these three corporations form the core of the Cooperative Health Care Network and employ over 500 home health aides. About 80 percent of the employees were formerly dependent on public assistance. The network [network] experience and their applicability …

Genitourinary Abnormalities In Children With Urinary Tract Infections, Ayşe Balat, L. Leighton Hill

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Urinary-tract infections (UTI) are common infectious diseases in childhood. The presence of UTI may be an indicator of a serious genitourinary (GU) abnormality that requires medical intervention. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of children discharged with a diagnosis of UTI from the Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, between July 1, 1991 and June 30, 1994. The purpose of the study was to determine how many patients had underlying GU abnormalities, the specific type of abnormality, and the microorganism causing the UTI. During the 3-year period, there were 48,382 discharges from the hospital, and 1,221 (2.5%) of those discharges were patients …

The In Vitro Effect Of Plasmodium Bergheiantigen Lysate On Natural Killer (Nk) Cellcytotoxic Activity, Cemaletti̇n Albayi̇, Ayşegül Yücel, Kemal Çeber, Turgut İmi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Plasmodium berghei is the rodent equivalent of Plasmodium falciparum which causes cerebral malaria in humans. However, P. berghei does not cause cerebral malaria in BALB/c mice, instead it leads to parasitemia, fever and some degree of liver damage. Although different aspects of immunological response have been intensively investigated in malaria; this the first time the in vitro effect of P. berghei antigen lysate on murine NK cytotoxic activity was studied. It was observed that this parasite antigen lysate suppresed the cytolytic activity of NK cells in a dose-dependent manner. Because the suppression of NK cell activity in a dose-dependent manner …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

A two-year old male infant with generalized BCG lymphadenitis is presented. There was no obvious immunodeficiency disorder detected in the patient. BCG vaccine had been given at two months of age, and the lymphadenopathy developed at 21 months of age. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the lymph node on Giemsa stain revealed macrophages very similar to Gaucher cells. These cells also resembled macrophages seen in lepromatous leprosy. They were engorged with acid fast bacilli and had streaked or wrinkled cytoplasm. Mycobacterium bovis was cultured from the lymph nodes and the patients improved with antituberculous therapy.
