Orient Rural Center Plan: Community Wide Solutions, Patrick J. Boylan, David R. Brooks, Donald D. Kienholz, M. Joseph Turner

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

This document represents a chapter of the West of the Sandy River Rural Plan. The focus of this chapter addresses a smaller section within the study area which is zoned Rural Center (RC). In October, 1998 Community-Wide Solutions (CWS), a consulting team working with County staff, contracted to research, study, and draft a plan for the Orient Rural Center. The Orient Rural Center is an "unicorporated community" for which state law requires the County to plan (OAR 660-22).

When Bad Things Happen To Good Intentions: The Development And Demise Of A Task Force Examining The Drugs-Violence Interrelationship Symposium On Drug Crimes, Deborah W. Denno Jan 1999

When Bad Things Happen To Good Intentions: The Development And Demise Of A Task Force Examining The Drugs-Violence Interrelationship Symposium On Drug Crimes, Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

Between 1994-1996, I was one of twenty-eight members of a Drugs-Violence Task Force, created to report to the United States Sentencing Commission specific findings, conclusions, and recommendations concerning the interrelationship (if any) between drugs and violence. Much of the controversy concerning how to approach the drugs-violence problem reflects two conflicting and long-held views of drugs and crime: the criminal justice view, which emphasizes detecting and punishing drug offenders, and the public health view, which advocates treating the drug addiction that leads some individuals to commit crime. Traditionally, the criminal justice view is associated with a “tough on crime” attitude that …

Finding A Fit Between Work And Family Life: Support For Working Caregivers, Eileen M. Brennan, Julie M. Rosenzweig, Alice Myrth Ogilvie

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the ways in which families with employed caregivers and children with emotional and behavioral disorders manage to meet the demands of employment and family responsibilities. Finding a fit between the demands of work and family life is a struggle for every employed mother and father. For parents whose children have emotional, behavioral, or mental disorders, meeting this challenge can prove extremely stressful, particularly since supportive services are notably lacking. There has been little research on the perceptions of employed parents of children with mental health concerns about the ways in which work and family responsibilities can fit …

17Β-Estradiol Enhances Nmda Receptor-Mediated Epsps And Long-Term Potentiation, Michael Foy, J. Xu, X. Xie, R. D. Brinton, R. F. Thompson, T. W. Berger

Psychological Science Faculty Works

17β-estradiol enhances NMDA receptor-mediated EPSPs and long-term potentiation. Gonadal steroid hormones influence CNS functioning through a variety of different mechanisms. To test the hypothesis that estrogen modulates synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus, in vitro hippocampal slices from 2-mo-old Sprague-Dawley male rats were used to determine the effect of 17β-estradiol on bothN-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) through intracellular recordings and long-term potentiation (LTP) through extracellular recordings. Intracellular EPSPs and extracellular field EPSPs (fEPSPs) were recorded from CA1 pyramidal cells by stimulating Schaffer collateral fibers. In intracellular experiments, slices were perfused with medium containing bicuculline (5 μM) and …

Changes In Groundwater Conditions In The Edwards And Trinity Aquifers, 1987-1997, For Portions Of Bastrop, Bell, Burnet, Lee, Milam, Travis, And Williamson Counties, Texas, Cindy Ridgeway, Harald Petrini

KIP Articles

The purpose of this report is to update the Texas Water Development Board’s (TWDB) Report 326, Evaluation of Water Resources in Bell, Burnet, Travis, Williamson and Parts of Adjacent Counties, Texas, written by Gail Duffin and Steven P. Musick in 1991. The groundwater problems identified in the initial investigation included a lack of reliable supplies for both short-term drought demand and long-term economic development (Duffin and Musick, 1991). According to TWDB Report 326, during late summer dry conditions and drought, water levels quickly drop in the Edwards aquifer due to low area-wide storage and low permeability in the Trinity Group …

Microcystins In Components Of Twelve New Hampshire Lakes Of Varied Trophic Status, Kimberly M. Johnson Jan 1999

Microcystins In Components Of Twelve New Hampshire Lakes Of Varied Trophic Status, Kimberly M. Johnson

Center for Freshwater Biology

Cyanobacteria toxins, called microcystins (MCs), were found in components of twelve, stratified New Hampshire (USA) lakes of varied trophic status during the summer of 1998. A sensitive ELISA method detected MC levels in whole lakewater, grazable phytoplankton fractions (<30 mm), net phytoplankton (> 375 µm), and isolated copepod and cladoceran (Daphnia sp.) samples. Whole lakewater (WLW) and net phytoplankton MC concentrations ranged between 9 and 165 ng MC L-1 and 0.2 and 2031 mg MC g-1-dry wt, respectively. Lakewater MC concentrations correlated with total epilimnetic phosphorus and total epilimnetic chlorophyll a concentrations and inversely with Secchi disk depth.

The filter-feeding cladoceran (daphnid) and omnivorous …

Hannah More And The Evangelical Influence On The English Novel, Karen Swallow Prior Jan 1999

Hannah More And The Evangelical Influence On The English Novel, Karen Swallow Prior

Faculty Dissertations

Hannah More was a significant literary, political, and social figure of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Ample evidence exists that More's only novel, Coelebs in Search of a Wife (1808), played a significant role in increasing the popularity and acceptability of the genre of the novel. Yet, More's rightful place in the story of the "rise of the novel" has been largely overlooked in literary criticism today.

This dissertation examines the life, work, and influence of Hannah More, an Evangelical Anglican, feminist, and social reformer. Emphasis is placed on those aspects of her life that demonstrate More's unique …
