Marine Resource Management On Anguilla: The Human Dimension, William R. Stevenson Jr. Jan 1999

Marine Resource Management On Anguilla: The Human Dimension, William R. Stevenson Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examined the perception of local stakeholders on the island of Anguilla in regards to the health, current management, and future management of their marine resources. Little quantitative data is available for any of Anguilla's marine resources specifically lobster and reef fish populations or rates of harvest. Anecdotal reports describe these resources as in decline. A descriptive survey was used to gather information on the stakeholder's perception of the health, the current management, and future management of their marine resources. A cornerstone of the study was that a polarization among stakeholder groups would emerge. This divergence of opinion did …

A Study Of Academic Procrastination In College Students, Janee K. Mcfadden

Open Access Master's Theses

As competition in the work force steadily increases, higher education in the twentieth and twenty-first century is of extreme importance. Academic success entails persistence as well as effective work habits. Despite the undeniable importance of a strong, successful college education, there is one recurring behavior directly related to one's college experience and success that has been consistently overlooked--the behavior termed procrastination. It is estimated that between 75 to 95 percent of all college students engage in academic procrastination. It is this same common behavior that may severely impact one's potential for success in college and subsequently in future endeavors.

Federal Transfer Taxation And The Role Of State Law: Does The Marital Deduction Strike The Proper Balance?, Mitchell M. Gans Jan 1999

Federal Transfer Taxation And The Role Of State Law: Does The Marital Deduction Strike The Proper Balance?, Mitchell M. Gans

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The federal transfer-tax system often makes state law a critical determinant. This is a necessary feature of a system that taxes the transfer of property, a concept that ordinarily derives its meaning from state law. As a matter of federal tax policy, however, it is important that the system neither overemphasize nor under emphasize state law. Part I undertakes a consideration of the role of state law in the transfer-tax system and the negative consequences that occur where the tax law fails to strike the proper balance.

Part II then focuses on the marital deduction, applying the framework developed in …

The Future Of Death Futures: Why Viatical Settlements Must Be Classified As Securities, Miriam R. Albert Jan 1999

The Future Of Death Futures: Why Viatical Settlements Must Be Classified As Securities, Miriam R. Albert

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Viatical settlements are a form of asset-backed security where a terminally-ill policyholder, known as a viator, sells the right to receive the proceeds of his or her life insurance policy to an investor. During his or her lifetime, the policyholder is paid an estimation of the present value of the death benefits under the policy. Viatical settlements are legal and serve a benevolent purpose. However, beyond the altruism of providing funds to the terminally ill, and the legalities of simply selling the right to receive life insurance proceeds to someone other than the insured, viatical settlements pose other legal and …

Paraplegic Functional Ambulation With Long Leg Braces And Upper Extremity Support: Predicting Long Term Usage Patterns Utilizing The Functional Independence Measure, Karin Copenhaver, Matthew Sherman

Masters Theses

Individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are frequently taught to ambulate with long leg braces and upper extremity support during their post-acute rehabilitation. In many cases this training fails to carry over once these individuals return to their homes after their rehabilitation course has ended. Subsequently, these individuals rely on their wheelchair as their primary mode of ambulation. Is ambulation training an expropriate intervention for patients in these cases? The purpose of this study was to investigate whether utilization of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) may serve as a predictor of long term functional ambulation with long leg braces …

Practice Makes Perfect: Reasonable Accommodation Of Law Students With Disabilities In Clinical Placements, Sande L. Buhai

San Diego Law Review

Clinical legal education provides exceptional benefits to law students.' It is one of the best ways that law students can begin to: (1) identify which type of law they wish to practice, (2) make connections in the legal field to foster future employment opportunities, (3) develop mentoring relationships, (4) learn many important skills, and (5) learn professional responsibility and competence. These benefits directly translate into increased opportunities for successful employment upon graduation.

The Changing Landscape Of America's Societal Sector, Denise Harb Jan 1999

The Changing Landscape Of America's Societal Sector, Denise Harb

Honors Theses

This paper will outline the changes in the nonprofit sector since 1945 and will attempt to show that these changes are the result of various shifts in the contextual environment in which the sector has developed. This review of the history of the nonprofit sector will trace the influence of such factors as World War two and the controversy which surrounded foundations mainly until the 1960s. Other contextual factors include more academic transformations such as the influence of Keynesian economic theory and the 1960's research on the roles of mediating structures in American democracy.

A Comparative Case Study On Why Women Run For Public Office : Hillary Rodham Clinton & Elizabeth Hanford Dole, Ashley Elizabeth Lorenz Jan 1999

A Comparative Case Study On Why Women Run For Public Office : Hillary Rodham Clinton & Elizabeth Hanford Dole, Ashley Elizabeth Lorenz

Honors Theses

As our political history evolves, slowly but surely more and more women are running for public office. What are the things that propel women to run for local, state, or federal leadership positions? Are there certain factors that are contingent upon their embarkment into the political arena? The answers to these questions all contribute to the "creation," if you will, of a political woman. In order to better understand these factors and their effects, I will examine case studies of two women, Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Dole, through the lenses of four such factors including the timing as it relates …

Public Education In Richmond : A Look At Current And Historical Data With Student Perspectives, Ben Wallerstein

Honors Theses

The objective of this project is therefore three-fold, (1) to analyze the current as well as historical patterns of racial distribution and educational outcomes in the Richmond metropolitan area, (2) to provide current students with this data, and (3) to create an opportunity for dialogue on the data across school, racial and economic boundaries. This project takes an important first step in developing the type of interaction and leadership that will be essential for the success of future regional cooperation in Richmond. At the very least, this report should serve as a base-point to inform future discussions on issues of race, …

Birth Order And Emergent Leadership : Does One's Birth Order Influence Emergence As A Leader In A Leaderless Group?, Leanna May Bowman Jan 1999

Birth Order And Emergent Leadership : Does One's Birth Order Influence Emergence As A Leader In A Leaderless Group?, Leanna May Bowman

Honors Theses

This study was initiated as an attempt to understand how personalities affect emergence in a group as the leader. What makes other group members accept one person as the leader over another? Because birth order has been discussed as an influential factor in the development of ones personality, this variable was chosen in order to see if perhaps leader emergence from a group is influenced by the personality, which, in turn, has been shaped by something else.

This study proved that firstborns and firstborn by genders emerge from a leaderless group to guide and direct the other members, and shape …

Women In The New Millennium: The Promises Of The Past Are Now The Problems For The Millennium, Lundy Langston Jan 1999

Women In The New Millennium: The Promises Of The Past Are Now The Problems For The Millennium, Lundy Langston

Journal Publications

In this Article, I will explore the roles of women and the expectations that society maintains for them in the past and the expectations for the present and future. As we enter the millennium, the courts appear to administer the law in the same way as laws were administered prior to the women's rights movement. Judges appear to implement notions of equal rights while society attaches the notions of the "difference group" without any special treatment for the dual roles. Something interesting appears to be happening to the dual roles of women. There is one standard stating that women must …
